Fandom: TOY SOLDIERS Pairing: Billy Tepper/Joey Trotta, Ensemble Cast Length: Novella in eight parts (all linked together) Author on LJ: jennaria (everyday journal)/ karolja (fic journal) Why this must be read: Having served as tech, plot, and every other kind of support possible for this story, I had the honor of watching it come into being bit by bit. Thia writes great stories to begin with, but for her to delve into the undertaking of a longer work is a rare treat. The emotional arc of this story is one of the finest you'll come across in this fandom, and her characterization is, simply put, spot on. Her command of this universe isn't limited to the two protagonists; she writes the rest of the guys just as well as she writes Billy and Joey, and she isn't afraid to prove it. Fandom: CRIMINAL MINDS Pairing: gen Length: 1,000 words Author on LJ: dorindaAuthor Website: Dorinda's Bare Bones PageWhy this must be read:A short piece involving Gideon, Reid, and Hotch building a profile. I love this look inside Gideon's mind and how it worked. As I said in my feedback of the time, Gideon's thought processes build and build until it all crystallizes into the unsub's profile in one big rush just like it did on the show. This is a Gideon who really got inside the head of the Unsub, and is haunted by it, shown subtly by his response to Reid's closeness. Although written before Gideon left, I think this piece offers some insight into who Gideon was and why he would do that down the road. ( Gideon let his eyes unfocus, flexed his hands. )Carcharodon Carcharias by Dorinda

Fandom: Chuck Pairing: none Length: @1000 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Why this must be read:If you've ever worked in retail, you can certainly relate to what John and Sarah are experiencing in this story. They may be spies, but not to the outside world. To everyone else, they're retail workers. This fic shows the reader snippets of the day to day lives that John and Sarah must lead when they're not out saving the world or protecting Chuck. I love it because I know all to well the things they're going through. Retail Hell

Fandom: PRIMEVAL Pairing: none but hints at Connor/Nick/Stephen Length: ~21,000 Author on LJ: entangled_nowAuthor Website: libraryofsolWhy this must be read:The premise is that Connor has a rather unfortunate and close encounter with something from the prehistoric past, and is lucky enough that Stephen and Nick are there to sluice him off in the aftermath. But what makes this story is that it has a great Connor voice, capturing the way that Connor's mind flits from one thing to another, even in the midst of a crisis. There are a few minor issues with punctuation, particularly punctuating dialogue, but since the dialogue crackles it didn't throw me out of the story. ( Excerpt )Room Service

Fandom: HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Pairing: Chad/Ryan Length: 72,269 words Author on LJ: elvensorceressAuthor Website: Writing JournalWhy this must be read: elvensorceress is well known in Chad/Ryan circles. She mods idontdance, the largest Chad/Ryan comm, and this story, Boy Disease, had most of the fandom following it as it was posted. I'd call it a must read for anyone entering the fandom for that reason alone. But it's also a great story. Though Chad/Ryan is the major focus, it deals with Taylor and Chad's relationship, instead of just sweeping it aside, and a major plot point hinges on Chad and Troy's friendship. It also does an excellent job with a side-pairing I enjoy, Zeke/Sharpay. In a different fandom, I might consider the characters a little melodramatic, but it works for me here. After all, they are high schoolers. This story is kind of epic, but I know for a fact that I'm not the only one who's read it through more than once. ( Excerpt )Go. Read. Love. Tell the author. In the future, my son will lead mankind in a war against Skynet. A computer system programmed to destroy the world. It has sent machines back through time. Some to kill him, one to protect him. Today we fight to stop Skynet from ever being created. To change our future. To change his fate. The war to save man kind begins now.- Sarah Connor (Season One, Episode One Opening Monologue) In order to understand the television series, it's important to have at least a little background knowledge of the Terminator movies (at least the first and second one). For the purposes of this overview, I've gone through all four films and both seasons of the series. This thing is huge and filled with spoilers. Please read with caution! Also, it is not dial-up friendly! Also, time travel makes things hard. There are alternate timelines existing in nearly every different film and the series. I give up at trying to make sense of it. If you'd like to try your hand at it, I recommend looking at the Master Timeline created by joyeuxnoel. Lastly, I owe many thanks to dramady, musesinspire and especially indiefic for their help in putting this together. I couldn’t have done it without them. All right. Hang on tight, because here we go.
