01:22 am We Walk A Thousand Stairs by Ana (PG)
Hi. I'll be driving the van again this month with a mix of gen, het and slash recs... if the set has a theme it is probably "lots of Zoe". That said, my first rec is entirely predictable:

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Zoe, crew (gen)
Length: 3200
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ana_grrl
Author Website: Ana fic
Why this must be read:

(Necessary reccer's caveat : This fic was written for me - but beyond being its absolutely delighted recipient I had nothing to do with it.)

This is a fabulous look at Zoe. It is a series of vignettes threaded together on a chain of associations, so that the ideas play back and forth between them, which all add up to an insightful portrait of Zoe, with crackling dialogue and still a real sense of how much more there is running beneath her speech than she chooses to set words to. Just wonderful.

"Problem?" Mal asks again, hours after their first meeting with the prospective pilot.

"He just bothers me." Nothing's going to change that, no matter how much Mal shoots that look at her, that same damn look he's been giving her for months now. Hopeful, and maybe a little hurt she ain't feeling it too.

"Want to elaborate on that?"

Zoe ain't here to explain herself to him. But some days, it pays to give Mal an easy answer just to shut him up. This is one of those days. "Can't trust a man who smiles like that." Easy, open. "No one who went through the war smiles like that. And if he didn't go through the war, I gotta ask what he was doing all those years."

11:10 am Double or Nothing by Brynn McK (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Ray Vecchio/Benton Fraser
Length: 13,600ish words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck
Author Website: Her website (not recently updated) or her memories (up to date).
Why this must be read: Written for due South Seekrit Santa 2007, Double or Nothing is a rare treat: post-CotW (post-series) F/V. Also, it totally rocks. It's a smart, meaty, involving fic that addresses the aftermath of Vegas -- the damage done to Fraser and Vecchio's relationship and the damage done to Vecchio himself -- within the framework of a taut, gripping post-Vegas plot. Brynn, being nifty that way, satisfyingly untangles some of the plot threads the show left knotted and dangling (and, like, stapled to a paper kite thrown into a ceiling fan) in a fic that's both gritty and due South-y and that's wonderfully emotionally involving. Also, it's hot. Hot like burning, hot like yearning.

01:50 pm Nice Coat by adina_atl (PG) & Care and Feeding by copperbadge (PG)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Jack/Ianto
Length: 1015 & 2580 words, respectively
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] adina_atl; [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge
Author Website: Adina’s stories on Quills and Ink; Sam the Storyteller
Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] adina_atl’s story has a fabulous opening line (“The first time Ianto spotted Jack microwaving his greatcoat, he ignored it: it didn't threaten Lisa, couldn't help her”) and a brilliant explanation — beautifully fleshed out in [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge’s prequel — for one of Torchwood’s minor mysteries: how does Jack get away with wearing “irreplaceable antique clothing while chasing through brambles and over fences after inimical aliens with sharp claws”?
