01:57 am Bird of Paradise by Jane Greensmith (PG-13)
Fandom: JANE AUSTEN (MANSFIELD PARK)
Pairing: Fanny Price/Edmund Bertram
Length: 4100 words
Author on LJ: No lj that I can find. Reading, Writing, Working, Playing on blogger.
Author Website: Jane Greensmith
Why this must be read:

Ok, this is probably the last MP rec in a little while. (Though this book has the only finished femmeslash in the fandom that I've read, and an incredibly good crossover with P&P, so I'm sure I will rec more later. :D)

With lyrical prose, this story takes on the Fanny/Edmund pairing thoughtfully. A lot is made on the novel about Fanny's physical weakness, but most fanfic (And movies!) prefer to forget it; this story doesn't, and it deals with it beautifully, using it as backdrop for her insecurities. Many people wonder about Edmund and his change of heart... and much has been said about the unromantic nature of Mansfield Park's ending. I think this is a very good response to both canon's apparent lack on this department and to the detractors of the ending and the pairing.

Excerpt:

Dr. Martin says that I have poor circulation. He says my heart isn’t strong enough to pump blood to my extremities. That’s why my hands and feet are always icy. Even in summer, I feel cold. I forego plunging necklines, not out of modesty... all right, not totally out of modesty... but because I need the warmth of high collars and long sleeves and shawls to trap and conserve the paltry heat my body generates.

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Length: approx 1300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fanfic_whore
Author Website: Fic List at Lifein1973
Why this must be read: This story gives us a look at a relationship between Sam and Gene. It shows how they want to be together, but also how they are trapped by Gene’s relationship with his wife and the time they live in. There is lots of angst here but there are also glimpses of beauty and hope shining through. Both characters are captured brilliantly and this is a wonderfully atmospheric and realistic story.

Oh and if you thought this story was good there is a link to the companion fic at the bottom of the story which is equally worth reading.

09:39 pm Five Times Faiza Hussain Meets a Superhero by Muccamukk (PG)
hi, I'm d and this is my first turn at the Marvel U wheel. (The Marvel U van is really a candy-coloured flying car, I imagine. With rocket boosters. Anyhow.) No theme for this month, but I will attempt to stay away from Iron Man movieverse and the X-Men, which other people are covering so well. Enjoy!

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: none (Faiza Hussain)
Length: approx. 3000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] muccamukk
Author Website: fic memories
Why this must be read:

Faiza Hussain is a character who appears in a new book called Captain Britain and MI:13, which you're probably not reading, but I'd reccomend it. Faiza is a London doctor and she wields the Excalibur sword, so she's on the unique side for comics and pretty cool. One of the things that makes her cool is that she's a total Captain Britain fangirl who has been thrust into superheroing by her newly discovered powers and the Skrull invasion. (Skrulls. Shapeshifting aliens. Tried to take over Earth last year. Now you're caught up.) The comic does a good job weaving all those things that make up her character, and this fic captures that, and what's awesome about her, pretty well. It's five times that Faiza, ultimate fangirl, met a superhero, always as practical and independent as she is in the present day. Lovely characterisation and fun moments.

"I'm a doctor too, actually," he tells her, "Though not a useful kind like you." He smiles disarmingly at her, and she kind of forgets how nervous she is. He takes a sip out of his own flute before nodding his head to the American across the room and saying, "Someday, some descent English manners are going to rub off on Whitman, and he'll realise that 'This is Faiza. She's one of us now.' does not a proper introduction make."

"Dane's okay," she says, trying not to sound defensive. "I know some people anyway, you know from... magazines and... stuff...." She trails off, deciding not to mention her childhood toys, or wallpaper, or bed sheets.

10:09 pm Fairy's Got Teeth by glossolalia (PG-13/R)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: none (James Buchanan Barnes/OMCs)
Length: approx. 2000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] glossing
Author Website: glossings
Why this must be read:

As you might expect, a few people flipped out when Ed Brubaker reintroduced Captain America's sidekick, Bucky Barnes, who was supposed to have fallen off an exploding plane and died during WWII. Other people, like gloss, saw the crazy amount of story potential in Brubaker's retelling of Bucky's tale. War-time orphan, nails-tough teenager fighting for his country, bit of a discipline problem. Absolutely no choice but to work what he's got for what it's worth. This story does the same, unashamedly examining what it might be like for a young soldier who had to learn to fend for himself. Her Bucky prose, as always, is knowing and wary and cuts sharp.

Basic accounting arithmetic, that's how he operates. He's the only one who cares about James B. Barnes, so he'd damn well do the best job he can at that. He treats himself, then, whenever he can; what he likes is everything, and nothing, like what they call it.
