07:42 pm Amor est Vitae Essentia by bibliophile1887 (PG)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Ian/Barbara; One, Vicki
Length: 3,558
Warnings: Spoilers for The Romans
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bibliophile1887
Author Website: Fanfic community on LJ
Why this must be read:

The Romans is a favorite among fans of the First Doctor's era, and one of the reasons why is the shippy potential between arguably the first 'OTP' on the program, Ian and Barbara. In her story, Samantha has presented to us several elements -- the attractive between Ian and Barbara, the keen intuition of fellow traveler Vicki and the uneasiness that grows during moments of peace when you're in the TARDIS -- and wrapped it up in an enthralling and enjoyable story of romance between two people who aren't yet fully aware how in love with each other they really are.

The title of the story, Amor est Vitae Essentia, translates roughly into "Love is the essence of life", and if these private moments between Ian and Barbara are anything to go by, that's the honest truth.

“Vicki, I understand what you're saying, or rather, not saying. But we're happy. We don't want to risk damaging a good friendship with something that may not last, or work.”

“You mean,
you don't want to risk it.” Vicki turned and walked up the dusty road.

Barbara watched her, amazed at just how grown up Vicki really was.

07:54 pm Let's Forget We're Running (Out of Time) by zoicite (R)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Donna/Ten, Donna/Lee
Length: approx 18k
Warnings: Spoilers for season 4, from Silence in the Library through Journey's End
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zoicite
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] z_fic
Why this must be read:

The series four finale, Journey's End aired quite some time ago and yet fandom is still rocking from its effects. The fanfiction produced in its wake has given fandom some simply terrific tales of heartbreak and starting over, including this one. Zoicite's JE fix-it fic is different from most: getting back that person the Doctor once knew and loved is hard work for the both of them, both before and after. It's the value of memories, the weight of friendship, the want for someone to love and the pull of an old life they'd never thought would come back again.

If you love Donna, love Ten when he's with Donna, was upset at the end of both Forest of the Dead and Journey's End, and enjoy a plotty good fix-it story, you should seriously consider reading Let's Forget We're Running (Out of Time).

08:22 pm The Alice Arc by Daydreamer (PG to NC-17, six stories total, Gen to Slash)
Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch (Gen and Slash)
Length: @200k for all six total
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Daydreamer's Den
Why this must be read:

(So the last one was Gen, how about a series that runs from Gen to Slash?)

Sweet Alice is a character in the series that I have a personal, real affection for. She loves our Hutch so very much, and swears that one of these days, "I'm gonna go straight, and when I do, I'm gonna getcha." He says he just might let her.

The affection between them is strong, and they care for one another, but Hutch is a cop, and Alice is a hooker.

This arc begins at the time just after Gillian is killed in the series -- another hooker, only Hutch didn't know it, and fell in love with her. His pain and his need to understand is where we start. The Hutch-angst is strong in this one.

10:27 pm Close by Evan Nicholas (PG)
I should have known better than to pick as a theme "the best laid plans go awry" for this month's MfU recommendations. However, my late start does mean that my first recommendation is very appropriate for my state of mind as it was written for the panic challenge at [livejournal.com profile] mfuwss.

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Length: 9k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] evan_nicholas
Author Website: Evan Nic's Fics

Why this must be read:

In a series of close calls, from the amusing to the alarming, Napoleon and Illya must deal with varying levels of panic. Evan is a master of "show, don't tell", and by showing us how these two characters behave under stress, he provides key insights into their different mindsets and how they complement each other. Further, Close demonstrates in word and deed the genuine affection Napoleon and Illya have for each other.

This story is a perfect balance of action-packed misadventure and love conquering all. So, what are you waiting for?
