11:08 am You With The Sad Eyes (R) by bubbleforest
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: AJ/Brian
Length: 26,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bubbleforest
Author Website: fic index on LJ
Why this must be read:

Written for popslash's [livejournal.com profile] bittybang challenge, this is an AU based not-too-exactly on 'Pretty Woman'. That's okay, I haven't seen the film and the story really works without that knowledge. Brian's the rich guy whose life isn't satisfying him any more, and AJ's the whore, desperate for money, who offers to drive the fancy car Brian's having trouble with, and ends up staying a week.

There's plenty going on in this story, and all ten primary pop boys get at least a mention, but it focuses on AJ and Brian and does them so very well. It's a smart story, with very little telling and a lot of showing, and it never forgets the fact that AJ's in a dirty business, any more than AJ does. You should read it.

11:17 am Call and Answer by all_you_wanted (pg-13)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Chloe/Clark
Length: less than 5000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] all_you_wanted
Author Website: Smallville Fic Tag
Why this must be read:

Granted, this isn't the most original piece of work ever. It's inspired by a scene from the show Roswell, and the inspiration is fairly obvious. Regardless, it's an excellently written short story that's an AU of the pilot episode of Smallville. It has Clark coming to Chloe after discovery he's an alien. It's nighttime and she offers comfort (not physical!). The morning after has some wonderful dialogue and it's very Chloe and Clark like they were in their freshman year of high school. It's just a little gem of a story I think.

Fandom: X-FILES
Pairing: gen
Length: 1500
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Magdeline at the 'Den of Iniquity'
Why this must be read:

This is a short fic, written for a 'two-hour' challenge where the author was given two hours to write three elements to incorporate in the story. What she came up with is simply fantastic and quite powerful as well. It's amazing how many truly gifted authors there are in this fandom and how wonderful it is that authors who have probably long since retired continue to share their stories (this story was written in 2000).

First of all, this story is beautifully written with such detail without being bogged down by too much description. Dialogue is sparse, and most of this story is driven by description and short phrases, handled with amazing grace by Magdeleine. The story is simple, a hint of an x-file, well within cannon, showing the deep partnership between Mulder and Scully without straying into relationship territory, and the last line still gives me shivers. Every time.

05:58 pm It Hardly Signifies by Kent (PG-13)
Fandom: JANE AUSTEN (PRIDE AND PREJUDICE)
Pairing: Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy
Length: 18,200
Author on LJ: not to my knowledge.
Author Website: Kent's stories at DWG and at 50 Miles.
Why this must be read:

And now, for something completely different.

I've read from Kent that he likes P&P for being 'too bright and sparkling,'* and his stories certainly show so. His characters laugh and joke a great deal oftener than it's usual to find in the fandom, and though his humour is nothing like Austen's--rather more modern--it's delightful in its own right. Kent's prose is easy to read and its simplicity serves him well, letting the characterization and dialogue shine through undiluted.

I read Kent for his humour, but don't let that deceive you: the characters' emotional arcs are not ignored, and this story has one of my favourites variations in Elizabeth's realization. Kent always writes what-ifs: this one in particular entails the lack of the Hunsford proposal due to the changed circumstances, taking over the story during Chapter 33.

She finally resolved not to think on him any more---after all, she would probably never see the man again, so her opinion of Mr. Darcy hardly signified.

*Jane Austen's own words about the novel.

11:00 pm Left Behind by Pervyficgirl (PG-13)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Martha Wayne, Bruce, Dick, Jason, Tim, Helena
Length: 1,130
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pervyficgirl
Author Website: Merely An Illusion
Why this must be read:

Time and time again we read that it's Thomas Wayne who inspires Bruce, and whose memory he aspires to live up to. But what of Martha Wayne? In this poignant fic the spirit of Martha lives on, watching over the protectors of the Gotham.

Like most other citizens that called Gotham City home, Martha Wayne had always had a love/hate relationship with the city of her resting place. Though in death, it would be Doctor Wayne's contributions to the city that were most remembered, Martha had fought for her city too, in her own ways. It was not a surprise to her, then, that when her life came to an end in a flash of blood-soaked pearls, her spirit chose to remain behind. Gotham did not easily let go of its citizens, and likewise, her citizens did not easily let go of their city. That remained true for Martha, even in death.

11:21 pm When It's All Over by Mione5 (PG-13)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape
Length: ~10,000 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Mione5's stories on FFnet
Why this must be read:

This is one of my favorite stories by Mione5 who is an amazing author.  She writes along a common theme in this fandom, a post war story where Severus and Harry had a secret relationship during the war. But her Harry's feelings and angst are amazingly potent and draw the reader right in, setting this story above others with the same ground. Her characterizations are right on, and very believable. When It's All Over has the right qualities for a great story: plot, angst, and of course a happy ending
