Fandom: X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 5,500
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Mimic’s Musings
Why this must be read:

So I missed crossover day here at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, but I wanted to offer up this little gem. It’s a crossover with X-men, but you don’t need to be any more familiar with X-men than anybody else who’s seen at least the previews for any of the three movies. Really, you don’t.

This is a post-episode piece, set right after the infamous X-Files episode “X-Cops.” If you didn’t see this episode, it was filmed in the grand tradition and by the camera crews from “Cops.” Mulder and Scully get caught out in south central LA by the “Cops” camera crews during the investigation of a case, and Skinner tells them to cooperate with the show because as Scully states, “The FBI has nothing to hide.”

Well, it turns out that in addition to Mulder and Scully tracking this ‘monster-of-the-week’ so is Logan “Wolverine” from X-Men. His theory is that this monster is actually a mutant he calls ‘Affrighted.’ It’s entertaining to see Mulder and Scully through the eyes of Logan. This is an excellent example of how an author can take another character from another fandom and give X-Files fans a little more insight into their own beloved characters.

Why this must be read: Lilah haunts Wesley, literally. Snarky yet poignant and angsty, just like Lilah/Wesley themselves.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Gen (TARDIS, Cassandra, Ten, Rose)
Length: 1242
Author on LJ: does not seem to have one
Author Website: profile on FicWad
Why this must be read:

You know the scene in 'New Earth' where Cassandra goes back in time via the TARDIS to see her past self? Well, this is centered around that scene, and it's from the POV of the TARDIS herself. The machine's ruminations on what makes Cassandra who she is are insightful and give a layer of depth to the whole scene. From the moment Cassandra enters the TARDIS to the moment she collapses, you follow all of their shared thoughts and emotions in a way most Cassandra-fic fail to do.

In other words, if you found yourself tearing up at the end of 'New Earth', then this one is for you.

(This fic is a part of a series of fics from the POV of the TARDIS, and although it can be read as a stand-alone story, I highly encourage you to check out the other parts of the series.)

10:55 pm Before You Let It Go... by seriousfic (PG-13 to R)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Scott Free/Big Barda
Length: Series in 6 parts
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] seriousfic
Author Website: LJ tag
Why this must be read:

Because it's a grand romance between Scott and Barda on the Fourth World, and an interpretation that's faithful to the couple's particular relationship dynamic. The characterisation is so strong and the progression of their relationship from captor to slave so believable, that even when the inevitable conflict arrives there is nothing but shock for what happens next.

Bonus: I'm a huge fan of writer's commentary, and [livejournal.com profile] seriousfic provides an educational look at the process and motivations in creating the final version of the story. (pt. 1 & 2 and pt. 3 & 4)
