Why this must be read:

11:17 am Moebius Man by Jedi Buttercup (PG-13)
Hello! I'm [livejournal.com profile] malabud, and I will be your Highlander driver this month on the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. I asked for and received permission to recommend more than just the one mid-month crossover. I enjoy well-done Highlander crossovers very much, and there are quite a few of them out there. (It's the fandom that goes with everything!) I will recommend a few non-crossovers, as well. I start off this month with one especially memorable crossover.

Fandoms: Highlander / Stargate SG-1
Pairing: Gen
Length: 5,200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup
Author Website: Jedi Buttercup

Why this must be read:

Jedi Buttercup is known for her crossovers, and this is one of my favorites. To be honest, it is more of a Stargate story than a Highlander story, but the premise is just too good to pass up. In the episodes Moebius, Part I and Moebius, Part II, SG-1 gets stuck in ancient Egypt. They all die, except for Daniel. But if he were immortal, well, that opens all sorts of possibilities.

The story starts with Moebius Man and continues in two sequels. The author has left open the possibility of more, but it does stand complete as is. It's a short read, but intriguing. It makes you think, which I like in a fic. Which came first, the teacher or the student?

02:35 pm All The People We Need To Love And Hate, by Cynthia Arrow (PG-13)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)
Pairing: Sam, Kara/Sam (Sharon, Helo, Natalie)
Length: 4,000 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] cynthia_arrow
Author Website: fic listed here, or check her fic tag for more recent stuff.
Why this must be read:

This story follows Sam from "Faith" to the end of "Revelations," as he struggles to come to terms with his new identity. It's quiet, understated, and gorgeously written; I think my heart broke once per paragraph. His thoughts and dreams about Cylons he's dealt with in the past and is learning to interact with now are particularly well-done. And of course there's his ever-tumultuous relationship with Kara Thrace.

Excerpt:

Even on the day he knew he was a Cylon, when the truth cut suddenly against his life, it was like a sweet, smooth blade. He didn't feel it; he only felt everything drain out.

10:09 pm Estancia by Alanna Rabun (NC-17)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 214K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] wisteria_
Author Website: gossamer page, alanna.net
Why this must be read: This fic is an awesome continuation of Fight the Future - I would have loved to see it as an episode. Starting right after they see the spaceship in Antarctica, the fic immediately captured my heart by solving the infamous Sno-Cat problem to my satisfaction. Alanna drops Mulder and Scully into yet another exotic location (a warm one this time!) in South America, and though they may have escaped from certain death in Antarctica, there's still a long way to go before they can go home. Mulder family backstory, Nazi connections and Consortium villains all make an appearance. Alanna does an incredible job with her descriptions, I could totally picture the setting in my head from her writing, which really contributed to the read.

10:48 pm "Carve Us as Instruments" by boombangbing (R)
Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Peter/Claire
Length: ~3000 words
Warnings: Incest
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] boombangbing
Author Website: fic journal: [livejournal.com profile] misfit_fandoms
Why this must be read: I am a huge, huge fan of [livejournal.com profile] boombangbing; her character voices are always spot-on, s/he can write both excellent angst/drama and fantastic crack, and her Peter/Claire is just perfect. "Carve Us as Instruments" is no exception; it's one of my all-time favorite fics. Although it is about Peter/Claire, the story is almost more of a Peter character study: it deals with his childhood, his messed-up relationships, and his hero complex. She also nails the politics of The Company on the head, with an excellent twist at the end.

11:33 pm Take the Guitar Player for a Ride, by Jae
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Jon Walker/Tom Conrad
Length: 18k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jae_w
Author Website: Jae's Band Stories Tag
Why this must be read: Jae is quite possibly the only author I've ever read who has the flexibility to write in pretty much any genre she chooses and shape the story just right. In this fic, she tackles the time period right after Tom has been kicked out of The Academy Is... when he spent some time touring with Panic. She does something that is hard, hard, hard to do: she makes Tom that guy that you realize is being a complete dick, but oh man, you know how he feels, at least to some extent. Her characters fight and have misunderstandings and communicate in the stupid, awful ways that most humans do. This is a gorgeous rendering of that moment in life where you're completely unsure of what to do with yourself and everyone else seems to have it together.
