11:54 am When Hiruma Met Mamori: Not a Love Story, by Misura (PG)

Fandom: EYESHIELD 21

Pairing: Hiruma/Mamori, Devil Bats

Length: One-shot

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] misura
Author Website: FF.net profile
Why this must be read:

This story was written for me during last year's [livejournal.com profile] yuletide. That makes it awesome right off the bat, but you should read this story because of the terrific characterization. While the primary focus is on Hiruma and Mamori, none of the other Devil Bats are left out. The format of the story will be familiar (and funny) to anyone who has read the manga, but should amuse even those new to the fandom.

    first impression
She's a girl - not football club material, to be sure; they haven't even got a team, let alone need of a manager to run around and get in his way, so he dismisses her from his mind, amused by the way she watches him, frowning in disapproval but too polite to address him directly.

He's a bully - she'd ignore him, except that he seems to keep watching her; he's trying not to let it show, but she can tell all the same.

12:12 pm Equilibrium by Lamardeuse (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: Huge, couldn’t find a word count, but it has to be at least 300k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse
Author Website: dreamhost
Why this must be read: Because enough of the short stuff, let’s put a bit of meat on those Sentinel bones. One thing I love about TS is the number of superb looooong stories out there, and before I’d even seen an episode, I’d read this glorious post-TSbyBS epic three times. Why? Because it’s by Lamardeuse and that really should be explanation enough. But if it’s not, then because it’s a plotty, first-time fic that has EVERYTHING you could possibly ask for – angst (the dial is up to 11 with ol’ Jim here at times:)), great characterisation, warm wit, a struggling Jim, Blair at the Academy, and h/c galore. You fall in, then emerge blinking and with a goofy smile on your face a couple of days later.

A taste, from near the beginning. Blair is finding the PT at the Academy a tad difficult...

03:50 pm Latter Days, by Pellucid (PG)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)
Pairing: Laura Roslin, Anastasia Dualla (Gen)
Length: 1800 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] pellucid
Author Website: fic listed here
Why this must be read:

This fic explores the relationship between two characters who've never really interacted in canon, yet their lives and loves have intersected in many ways. But it's mostly a deeply sensitive character study of Dee; the pragmatism and quite self-discipline that mask her strong emotional attachments. The shifting point of view captures the similarities and longing for connection these characters share.

Excerpt:

Dee doesn't hurry as she turns the kettle off, washes out the mug, pours the tea. She wants to do this for the president, wants to do anything she can. She wants the president to know this, but can't imagine how to tell her. I helped you escape from prison, Dee wants to tell her. I helped you steal an election. My marriage was in shambles, but I stayed until he put you on the witness stand like that; that was the final straw. I've loved the same men you've loved. I've always believed in you.

When Dee was still with Lee, the admiral would invite them to dinner every couple of weeks. One evening the president was to come as well, an incursion into family dinner that the admiral clearly viewed as symbolic. Lee was skeptical; Dee was secretly thrilled. But skirmishes broke out that day in Dogsville, occupying the admiral with security and the president with the Quorum discussing alternatives to the housing crisis. Dinner was cancelled, and then came the trial, the end of her marriage, and Kara's return; Dee's second family slipped into the past along with her first.

03:58 pm When Undercover Really Means Overexposed by the_minx_17 (R)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo
Length: ~ 6.500 words
Rating: R (nothing explicit)
Warning: references to BDSM
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] the_minx_17
Author Website: InsaneJournal Account
Why this must be read:

Now I know that isn't to everyone's taste because it deals with BDSM but this is a very thoughtful story for this genre. We get to see a side of Tony we all know could be there – him playing before joining NCIS, being a sub and all – and the interaction with Gibbs is as spot on as if this was a regular episode. Add to that a rather interesting case with Tony going undercover and you have a perfect mix.

If you're still skeptical about the BDSM part, I can assure you: it is not graphic and the story deals more with relationships between people.

04:37 pm Love, the Missing Word by Sarah Kiley (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: long
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read: Mulder and Scully get drafted to fight in World War III. Also, absence makes the heart grow fonder. I love the idea of Mulder and Scully in wartime. This fic is far from perfect, but it is a fun and interesting read that will stick with you for a long time, and there are some good original characters. I really enjoyed and was thoroughly drawn into this fic. I am going to warn you right now though, DO NOT read the epilogue/sequel, The Found Word. Two words: Fox Junior.

President Clinton had put the draft into effect for all men between the ages of twenty-five and forty. Because of special circumstances, all nonessential law enforcement officers had been included in the draft. The X-Files had been considered nonessential, their cases falling into the
violent crimes section.

And so her partner, Fox Mulder, had been drafted to the war.

04:57 pm The star to every wand'ring bark by Alex (NC-17)

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan; Qui-Gon/others, Obi-Wan/others
Length: not too long; it's in two parts, link to part two at the end of part 1
Author: Alex
On LJ: [info]splix
Author Website: some of her stories are on Masters and Apprentices and others on her lj
WARNINGS: male/male sex, non-con, rape; this story is AU

Why this must be read: What to say? I utterly adore this story! Qui-Gon is a whore, not a Jedi, but still very much Qui-Gon. And Obi-Wan comes to him to be trained for an undercover mission. Qui-Gon's past pulled at my heartstrings (and at Obi-Wan's) and the trouble they get in is profound. Tense, emotional, beautifully written, it has all I love in a story.

06:38 pm Friends Don’t Let Friends Wear Plaid Schoolgirl Skirts by Henry Jones Jr. (NC-17)
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Length: 5800 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://www.sabershadowkat.com/smallville/smallville.html
Why this must be read:

This is another one of those fics that just feels good. Most people, if you’ve spent any time in fandom at all are familiar with the name Henry Jones Jr. This is another fic that might seem just a bit OCC for Lex, but lets all remember that cannon does have him as a party boy and I’d like to think that after a week of dealing with his father, and the crap factory, he sometimes needs to unwind and this is probably a lot like the way Lex would do it. Plus, I have a Lex-is-high kink. :)

08:33 pm Putting the B Back in Subtle, by Secrethappiness and Algernon_Mouse (NC-17)
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Bob Bryar/Jepha Howard, Bob Bryar/Brian Schechter
Length: ~29k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] secrethappiness and [livejournal.com profile] algernon_mouse
Author Website: None that I know of for Mouse, Pinn's Fic Index
Why this must be read: As far as I'm concerned this is pretty much THE Bob Bryar character study fic. It starts just after he's finished his program in sound-teching, and goes up through to the present of when Pinn and Mouse were writing this, about a year ago. It's one of those stories that takes canon and really works with it to try and explore the things we probably aren't told in interviews, the people that these guys might be behind the "characters" represented in their videos, their twitters, their self-representations to an identified audience. This story is perfectly paced, makes everyone in it so, so human--particularly The Used, who are often villainized--and works the details of a guy getting from one day to the next into a really fascinating narrative. It's also a really, really interesting take on early MCR and how easily everything could have come to naught, from what is essentially an outsider's view. I'm just so continuously impressed by this fic.

09:51 pm Because I Have Spent My Day Watching Psych by Basingstoke (PG)
Fandom: PSYCH
Pairing: Shawn Spencer/Carlton Lassiter
Length: very short
Author on LJ: basingstoke@lj
Author Website: Basingstoke on LJ
Why this must be read:
Because it is so Perfectly In Character. Because Shawn and Gus are Super Best Friends and Share Everything (even things Gus doesn't want to hear). Because It Is Hilarious. But mostly because of the CAPSLOCKS OF LOVE.

While normally, excessive use of the capslock is enough to drive a reader batty, in this story it's just....Shawn being Shawn. And, as a bonus, it *so* annoys his neighbors.

To sum up, this story, short as it is, is pure *yay*! (Though note, it doesn't have an actual title, just the page title). Trust me, you'll want to say the dialogue out loud.
