09:47 am Secret Santa by Sue DeNimme (G)

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: none
Length: ~ 1000 words
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] sue_denimme
Why this must be read: It's a wonderful story about Donna and the Doctor after the events of Journey's End. It's not a fix-it fic but  it does bring a sort of closure: a great tribute to the awesomeness that is Donna Noble.

Fandom: Psych
PAIRING: Shawn/Gus
Length: Short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] papersoflight
Author website: n/a
Why This Must Be Read:
So I go on a lot about my objection to most Shawn/Gus fic being Gus himself. Gus has a whole lot of denial going on. And a whole lot of issues. (Yes, Shawn is a big bag of issues too, but Gus is far more practiced at Repress and Deny). This story is a brief and pretty powerful glimpse of the darker side of a Gus freakout, and the effect it might have on Shawn, who is as always smart enough to know the truth, but unable to get past it anyway. Shawn really, really does angst well for such a comedic character. He's just too obviously smart for us to believe he'd really believe in Gus' pretending. Just like Gus is too smart not to know that, and yet he still pretends.

A short, tight little piece of angst for when you're in the mood for something painful.

03:06 pm The Four Stages of Oh Nuts I Like Him, by memlu (PG/PG13)

Fandom: Eyeshield 21
Pairing: Hiruma/Mamori
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] memlu / [livejournal.com profile] mekosuchinae
Author Website: Fic list at delicious.
Why this must be read:

I've already rec'ed [livejournal.com profile] memlu this month, but I love this fic too much to let a little detail like that stop me. While I adore the Hiruma/Mamori pairing, it's hard to move the relationship along without warping them out of character. This fic manages beautifully, and with a wonderful dash of humour.

And, true, Hiruma had immediately responded, "Shut up, fatass," to which Mamori had felt it her moral obligation to respond with, "Do you have to call everyone by degrading names?" and, really, it had all basically come down to "fucking manager" and "stop calling me that!"

Even that, though, had been casual; almost friendly. As if somewhere along the line being called fucking manager by a gun-toting quarterback probably suffering from some advanced form of psychosis was normal.

03:50 pm To Hiruma, With Love, by Fushigi Kismet (PG13)

Fandom: Eyeshield 21
Pairing: Hiruma/Mamori
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tokyofish
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

Shock of all shocks, the demon of Deimon High gets love letters from female fans--as Mamori discovers, much to her horror, when she's given the job of replying to them. Poor Mamori's horrified realization about her own feelings is priceless. And the ending is fantastic.

Slowly putting the letters down, she spread them out flat on the table. They were ALL love letters. And what was more, while three of them were from different schools - this she could talk herself into understanding, they were unaware of Hiruma's true personality, the only thing about him that they knew was his ability on the playing field; it was a type of ignorance she could forgive - TWO of them were from DEIMON HIGH. What was more, Mamori knew both of the girls in question - one of them sat one row up and one row over from her in class and the other one was in girl's choir.

Why did she suddenly feel like her faith in humanity had been completely and utterly misplaced?

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: ~1100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] abbybanks
Author Website: dS fic tag
Why this must be read: because [livejournal.com profile] abbybanks has written a powerful, gut-wrenching story about the past and memories and the way they hold sway over our lives, echoing like a gunshot through the cold morning air...all the possibilities that lie in an unopened trunk, a cup of tea and a phone call.

11:30 pm That Shall Achieve the Sword by Astolat (PG)
Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur (preslash)
Length: 5,772 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] astolat
Author Website: fanfic by astolat

Why this must be read:

It's hard to believe this story isn't longer. It packs all the action and emotional impact of a much longer story. There are about a dozen moments that leap off the page with enough emotional resonance and visual clarity that if the story weren't so unforgettable, you'd get confused a few weeks later and remember it as an actual filmed episode and not a fanfic. I really cannot recommend this one highly enough on both the strength of its writing and the beautiful way it captures the depth of Arthur and Merlin's love for and commitment to one another.

Note: This story has two prequels which are available on the author's website as well.

11:33 pm Dying ain't much of a living by Tiffiny (PG)
Fandom: Magnificent Seven
Pairing: None. Vin
Length: Short 1000 words approximately
Author's website: Unknown

Why this must be read

Vin, or any of the other Magnificent Seven boys, would be more likely to die violently than anything else. How would they cope with a slow, lingering death?

Told from Vin's POV, we see how he and his friends react to such a situation. Though the sections are short, the author keeps each person in character as Vin thinks of their visits to him. We see Vin's clear impatience with the slowness of his death and feel his resentment of his healthy friends. I like his practical acceptance at the end - it seems very fitting.
