Fandom: HEROES Pairings: Various; characters: Elle, some Sylar, Noah, Peter Length: ~1900 words Author on LJ: carmens_quillAuthor Website: LINKWhy this must be read: I'l admit; the "Five Things ..." fanfic meme is one of my favorites. In this particular version, carmens_quill details five lives that Elle never led; some of them, we see bits of in canon, and some of them are entirely new and foreign (but somehow also believable, at the same time). For me, Elle was a character that deserved a better send-off, and this is what I love about "Five Things": that it gives Elle the complexity and possibilities that her character deserved. There are many kinds of possible endings for Elle, ranging from near-canon to entirely AU, and each episode is somehow poignant in a different way. Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: Jaime Reyes (Blue Beetle III)/Khaji Da (Scarab), implied Jaime/Eddie Length: 500 words Author on LJ: shananaginAuthor Website: shananagin's archival post on LJ Why this must be read:It's light-hearted, fun and sexy with a beautiful rendition of the scarab's friendship with Jaime. Plus it has a delightful cameo from Jaime's sister Milagro. ( Excerpt )Partners

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: "Despite the title, basically no romantic content. They're fighters, not lovers. Of course, Conner and Cassie are just this side of PDA." Length: 5,300 words Author on LJ: freddylloydAuthor Website: profile on FF.netWhy this must be read:A look at the team just after "A Kid's Game": Vic, Kory, Gar, Tim, Cassie, Kon, Bart. The characterization is spot-on and subtle. The action is both precise and exciting. The team dynamic is excellent. Everything that's great about Teen Titans is in this fic. Fandom: DC Comics Pairing: Dick Grayson (Nightwing I)/Kori'ander (Starfire) Length: 3,604 words Author on LJ: seriousficAuthor Website: None Found Why this must be read: seriousfic gets these characters and she's able to convey all that make them wonderful and good for each other with porn that's hot as hell. She writes with great descriptives that bring the reader into the story. It feels immediate, as though you're present with the characters. Although I love both Kory and Dick, I don't usually ship them - this fic made me do it. I love it pieces. ( Excerpt )Tamaranian Hatesex

Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Pairing: Napoleon/Illya Length: 2400 words Author on LJ: shayheyred Author Website: Chez ShayWhy this must be read: Illya's been blinded, Napoleon has been shot in the leg and they're slowly making their way down a tunnel that will either lead to safety or disaster. Shay has been rec'd here many times before and with good reason. She has a wonderful knack for finding both Napoleon's and Illya's voice whether it be in her longer works, her humorous short stories or her hurt/comfort tales. I adore this vignette and the ending makes my heart melt every single time I read it. I have no doubt it will have the same effect on you. Auld Lang Syne

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo Length: ~ 2.800 Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: Profile on ncisfiction.comWhy this must be read:I come bearing a PWP. This one is even a bit special because it also creates a possible scenario of why Gibbs and Tony never seem to be on Stakeout together in the show. It's a rather simple answer: they just can't keep their hands off of each other. Now, this story is not only smoking hot, it's also funny and rings very true to the characters. Me? I can totally see this as the reason why they never are on Stakeout together on the show. Stakeout

Fandom: BANDOM Pairing: Ryan/Spencer Length: ~34k Author on LJ: sunsetmogAuthor Website: Sunsetmog's Fic IndexWhy this must be read: There are plenty of kinds of Ryan/Spencer fics out there--long epic tributes to their nearly lifelong friendship, band-centric fics, AUs, etc., so it can be kind of hard to pick one from all of those. I like this one because it explores what might have happened if one of them had moved, if something had somehow interrupted their friendship, how that could have changed the dynamic. I also like this for the way she writes the friendship between Ryan, Jon and Brendon; her choices of job for both Spencer and Ryan, and the way she makes their characterizations work within the world she's created. It's also incredibly sweet, and a little familiar in the way that we've all gone through losing a friend, or refinding one, feeling self-conscious, basically, being human. As a bonus, Mog's work tends to be clever, funny when you're least expecting it, so it keeps you smiling, even when you're a bit achy inside. Fandom: TOUR OF DUTY Pairing: Myron Goldman/Johnny McKay Author on LJ: brooklinegirl Author website: Notes From the UndergroundWhy this must be read:I have to admit that my favourite pairing is Myron/Zeke. That being said, I do enjoy Myron/Johnny. Let me share a few canon, on screen facts with you. Fact: They shared a room. Fact: They shower next to one another (with Myron smoking the whole time). Fact. Johnny reads porn and sits around in underwear while talking to Myron. Fact. Johnny baits Myron (see previous fact). Myron is irked (e.g. puts a bullet hole line in floor). Fanon Slash Fact: They make a great pairing to write hot PWPs about with all the UST and intensity. And that is why this story is hot. PWP hotness. That is enough reason to read it, eh? Fandom: Magnificent Seven Pairing: None. Nathan, Ezra Length: One-shot, 2000 words approximately Author's website:Unknown Why this must be read:This is a rare glimpse of Nathan and his thoughts and feelings at the death of his father. The first part of the story is told from Nathan's POV and describes the events of the funeral. The author captures this practical man's grief very well and does a great job of describing the other men's reactions too. The second part of the fic is a description of the wake and the ending is a great mixture of sweet and bittersweet as Nathan realises he is indeed among friends. The funeral of Obediah Jackson

Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully Length: 250K Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: L.C. Brown's gossamer pageWhy this must be read: When a senator's wife accuses her husband of being possessed, Mulder and Scully head to Bermuda to investigate. There are two types of transfers in the fic - Scully's impending mandatory transfer from the X-Files, and that fact that Mulder seems to have been possessed as well... I love the way the author intertwines their growing relationship with the case, with disastrous results. Chilling, to say the least. On the cheerier side, I love Mulder's "proposed" solution to the first problem. They're so analytical when talking about love. Transfers

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Vecchio Length: ~3,700 words Author on LJ: lamentablesAuthor Website: lamentablesWhy this must be read: lamentables doesn't often write, but when she does, watch out! This beautiful piece came out of this past year's ds_match – with lamentables lending her formidable skills to Team Whimsy. We really could have used her on Team Reality. Notes On The Impossibility Of Nirvana is a dense, thoughtful read, requiring multiple passes to fully comprehend the complex layering of want and need and desire, interlaced with humor and grief and the wackiness we come to expect from due South. Fraser has a gift, a special ability, one that rules his life, scars him and holds him tight with its power over him. It could destroy him, but it doesn't. Thought-provoking and subtle, this is one of the best stories I've ever read. It makes you ponder Fraser and the choices he's made... ( Short excerpt... )Notes On The Impossibility of Nirvana
