This is my last rec of the month. I want to thank [livejournal.com profile] crack_van for letting me rec. Also, I hope you've enjoyed my recs, and that if they sparked your interest, you'll check the rest of the fandom out, since there's a lot of good stuff out there. Happy almost April!

Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Greta/Vicky-T
Length: ~22k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tam_cranver
Author Website: tam_cranver's writing journal
Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] tam_cranver has elevated adapting nostalgic films/books to bandom stories into a high art. While I love pretty much all of her stuff, I chose this one because I got super excited about it being femmeslash, which there isn't a whole lot of in bandom. Plus, it's Greta-centric, which makes me happy. Greta is a fantastic character to work with, and Tam does a really good job of exploring both her extremely traditional feminine aspects and the core of steel she's clearly carrying underneath. Additionally, this world is so interesting, and I find myself wanting to know more about every single one of the characters in it. This is a fun, sweet, whimsical adaptation, loosely based on "The Prince and the Pauper." Mark Twain would totes approve.

Why this must be read: It's not all about the Sam angst. While Sam is fun to torture, there are loads and loads of fics which focus on the pain of others, some that don't even include Tyler at all. "Div" is a brilliant look into Gene Hunt's development into the Guv we know and love. It's a story of a young Hunt's first week as a detective and shows us a young man, uncertain of where he belongs, who must deal with the brutal bullying and hazing of his fellow detectives, an abusive father, and a drug addicted brother (the last of which is canon, by the way.) By the end, we see how Gene learns to use his brains and his brute to become the DCI we know in canon. As far as I'm concerned, this fic is canon back story for Gene.

Warnings for abusive language and angst.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)
Pairing: Kara/Lee
Length: About 3,000 words
Author on LJ: [profile] daphnaea

Why this must be read:

My apologies for falling off the wagon last week! I blame post-finale shock. The end of the series left me in the mood for some old-school Kara/Lee fic, and this is about as good as it gets. Set briefly after "Scar," it depicts one brief encounter between the two in which they run the gamut from hatred to passion to unconditional love, as the story loops back upon itself in a circle. It pulls off the difficult trick of being incredibly angsty without crossing the line into melodrama. Pilots at their best.

His eyes caught on the line of her jaw, a small beauty memorized to the point of loathing. He wanted to shake her, to seize the frayed ends of her expression and unravel her back to something he understood. He wanted to be on the other side of the ship, anywhere but stuck in a dead end fight about everything and nothing. He wanted to find a piece of her that lacked a cutting edge.

05:11 pm "Winter in Elysium" by Saestina (R)
Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Adam/Peter/Claire
Length: ~37,000 words (in seven parts)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] saestina

Why this must be read: Because it takes a truncated season (season two) and expands its scope and story into an epic. Because it's an AU that frankly makes more sense than the original ending we were given. Because it's one of the few OT3 situations I've found believable and well-balanced. Take your pick. "Winter in Elysium" departs from the show at 2x10, with the virus being released and no magical healing blood transfusions to fix it. Our three unbreakable heroes have to watch as the people around them die, one by one, and then decide what to do with themselves; the prose is poignant and lyrical, and the story draws you in completely.

08:06 pm Good Morning by Ami Ven (G)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: gen
Length: 834 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ami_ven
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

Another AU story where Kelly didn't die and pays a visit to her father and his team at NCIS headquarters one morning. This was a flashfic and is therefore rather short but with just a few words it sets the scene and throws you right into it. It's an adorable, rather canonic little story which doesn't lack the humor of the show in the slightest.

08:26 pm Out of Our Minds by Sarah Segretti and haphazard method (PG-13)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 13,000+ words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: Sarah Segretti: The Little Things, hap's home
Why this must be read: I love fics that deal with Mulder's telepathy in Biogenesis. What would have happened had the telepathy not been removed from Mulder? And more importantly, how would Scully react, when confronted yet again with hard evidence regarding extraterrestrial existence, but this time in the form of her partner? According to Sarah and hap, the answer is really, really badly.

I feel a light pluck at my sleeve. Mulder. His gaze is not focused, but somehow he knows where to look to see me. Byers rockets the van out of the parking lot, and I'm thrown on top of Mulder. Chest to chest, I lift my head to meet his bleary eyes.

"Million and one," he says, barely audible.

I hear it, he'd said in Skinner's office, in my head.

That's not possible, I tell myself. That's just not possible.

And I keep telling myself that as I watch him recover in a real hospital bed, as I sit across from him at his kitchen table while he wolfs down his first solid food in weeks, as we take a slow walk around his neighborhood on a warm summer morning so that he can regain his physical strength and I can tell him about Africa without being overheard.

The look of hope on his face when I tell him one possible theory I have about the craft's origin is something to behold. But oddly, I find myself shielding my thoughts, not allowing my feelings to take shape. As if I didn't want him to know how plausible I found that theory.

As if I didn't want him to know how much it pleased me to see him happy.

09:25 pm The Element of Risk by Kay Kelly (PG)
Fandom: Highlander
Pairing: Gen (slight Methos/Charlotte)
Length: 1,100 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Wilusa's FFN Profile

Why this must be read:

Kay Kelly aka Wilusa has written some great Highlander fanfiction. She developed an alternate Highlander universe that fit within the canon of the television show, the original Highlander movie, and Highlander: Endgame. If that's not talent, I do not know what is! This particular story stands alone, as it is not part of her larger Highlander universe.

This story tells the true tale of the brief affair between Dr. Benjamin Adams and the slave Charlotte. The picture painted of Methos in this fic is strangely compelling. He seems almost cold-blooded, and the reader sees there is more of the Horseman left in Methos than he would care to admit. Even he admits he is always playing games and cutting things as close as possible. Despite this, he cares for Charlotte in his own way, and he would have told her something she would have longed to hear had he had the time. The twist at the end of the fic is well worth the read.
