Title:The Flexible Concept of Tomorrow, or Five Times Donna Noble Remembers Meeting That Bloke With The Stupid Name (And One Time She Doesn't) by [livejournal.com profile] finisterre
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 11,284 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] finisterre
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] finisterre is her fic journal, or you can find her XF fic at Gossamer under "Marasmus."
Why this must be read: This is a brilliantly written, heart-warming read that perfectly captures the characters of both Fox Mulder and Donna Noble, while weaving together their canon stories into a tale so sweetly moving that I now have tears in my eyes as I sit here typing.

The origin of the story is, quite ironically, a prompt someone posted last year, at the first [livejournal.com profile] xf_pornbattle, for Mulder/Donna: redheads. Despite this quirky beginning, it is absolutely not a Mulder/Other story, nor is there any porn. The story is MSR, but it would help, if you are not a Doctor Who fan, to acquaint yourself with the character of Donna Noble, most especially with her fate at the end of the 2008 season. Knowing this will give additional resonance to the story, although I read and enjoyed it for the first time knowing nothing more about Donna Noble than that she was the tenth doctor's companion for the past season.

Since this is officially my favorite cross-over fic ever, I really must get caught up with Doctor Who.

Why this must be read:

Because GO is just one stand-alone book, fanfic writers are adept at finding the inbetween spaces where stories go untold: GO moves at a fairly frenetic pace and glosses over large periods of time, and that's where gems like this lie in wait, sparkling. Aziraphale and Crowley spend eleven years as "godfathers" to a child they think is the Antichrist, and in that time, they really get to know each other after 6,000 years acquainted--and start to realize they like what they find. This story is beautifully written and simply vibrates with Apocalyptic anxiety and awakening passion, restrained and sublimated in snark and slithering out into expression through art and music. The breathtaking evocation of Stravinsky is the pitch-perfect vicarious climax. Fantastic descriptions, biting humor, and dialogue that is wonderfully, utterly, them.

05:22 pm Decompression Syndrome, by Mergatrude (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Ray Kowalski/Louis Gardino
Length: 1300 words
Author: [livejournal.com profile] mergatrude
Why this must be read: You might think this is an odd pairing, since they never even met in canon, but in fact they make a lot of sense together. In this fic, Ray is coming back from undercover and needs someone to talk to, and Gardino, a fellow cop, takes care of him the way Stella can't. They have a wonderful buddy relationship, and seem to get each other without having to say much in explanation. There's a bittersweet feeling in the story, partly because of the situation with Stella, but also because we know what's going to happen to Gardino.

06:16 pm Fake News/Doctor Who (PG-13)
Title: Truthiness and Relative Dimensions in Space
Pairing: Overall Jon Stewart/"Stephen Colbert", various others
Length: approx. total 70,400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sailorptah
Author Website: fic journal [livejournal.com profile] reseda_ptah; erinptah.com.
Why this must be read:

T.A.R.D.I.S. is actually a series of stories chronicling "Stephen Colbert"'s two stints as the Doctor's companion; once with the tenth Doctor and Jack when he was a teenager, and once with the fourth Doctor and Sarah-Jane Smith when he is an adult. It's a bit of an epic, and with a variety of surprise cameos and stealth crossovers, it's helluva fun to read.

Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Lana-centric
Length: 10k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] penumbra
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] extrasolar
Why this must be read: Lana's one of the central figures of Smallville but she's been more done to than mistress of her own destiny. AU after the end of season seven, this fic brings Lana to Star City and, through her choices there, a world that's no longer defined by Clark and Lex.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: None, gen
Length: A bit over 9.300 words
Author on LJ: Not in LJ
Author Website: Jamwired in The Archive at the end of the Universe
Why this must be read: Are you in the mood for some Methos' angst? Because we'll find a lot of that here. This story is a Future-AU, focused on Methos. There's a little bit of Joe, but not a lot, really, and that's all. A very good story, with an absolutely original concept about what the Game really means. I can't say a lot without spoil the plot, so let's have a little taste, instead: )

So... whadda think? It's Methos' angst! Who's able to resist Methos' angst?

Fandom: FIREFLY/SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Mal/Dean
Length: 25,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sevenfists
Author Website: just her LJ
Why this must be read: The basic premise of this story is simple: Dean Winchester pops unintentionally through a portal and ends up onboard Serenity. The basic premise does not begin to do this story justice. For one thing, this is such a smooth, seamless crossover that one can hardly even see the joining stitches. The characters react to each other in totally plausible and organic ways, and Dean fits into the 'verse with the exact mixture of discomfort and familiarity that he ought to have. All of the voices are delightfully spot-on, the dialogue is gold, the Mal POV is simply perfect, the plot is novel and interesting, and the world is beautifully realized and vividly detailed. The slow build toward a relationship between Dean and Mal is wonderfully paced to feel natural and integral to the story; it does not eclipse the sterling character work on the entire cast, or the excellently satisfying non-romantic relationships that Dean builds with the rest of the crew. This fic is posted in several parts, so be sure to look out for the link to the next chapter at the bottom of the post. And if you like this story? There're a few more that follow it in the same crossover 'verse.

Title: Defect by Kikkimax
Pairing: None, gen
Length: 39,590 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kikkimax
Author Website: Other Places fanfiction by Kikkimax
Why this must be read: Bottom line Defect is awesome! Kikkimax has infused both fandoms/characters seamlessly, and OMG its gen. A genre in SPN I rarely ever read, but Defect is an acceptation to that rule. The plot is tight, logical and IMO has spot on characterization. Mix in depth, plot and with snappy sharp dialog, and the interaction between Dean and Gideon what you have is one delicious, fun, read. Defect is a steady, fast moving read that thoroughly engaged me from beginning to end. Make time to read this long well paced lusciously rich fic that will stay with you long after you've finished.

Title: Untitled, by [livejournal.com profile] life_on_queen
Pairing: none
Length: ~1,500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] life_on_queen
Author Website: none listed

Why this must be read:

This fic has no title. Nor was it meant to have a title. Or, really, to even be a fic, rather than a jumped up drabble of only 150 words or so. But as happens, the characters took on a life of their own and told way more of a story than [livejournal.com profile] life_on_queen intended, giving us a glimpse of John Connor through John Crichton’s eyes, and of the wasteland that Crichton’s home world has become because of Skynet.

Enjoy! And mind the little twist at the end... ;)

Fandom: THE SENTINEL/SANDMAN
Pairing: none, gen
Length: ~1,200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] izhilzha
Author Website: her page on ff.net
Why this must be read:

Due to its premise, The Sentinel tends to get crossed over a lot with military or cop-type shows (SG-1, Mag7, Pros, S&H). I'm always on the lookout for interesting and novel crossovers in this fandom, and this lovely, heartrending piece certainly fits the bill. Jim visits the blue jungle, where he is greeted by a unexpected but compelling visitor.

Excerpt:

"The thing sitting next to the jaguar is utterly strange; pure white skin and rich satin black untouched by blue. It’s a girl, he thinks. Her luminous hand scratches comfortably behind the jaguar’s ears, and its purr shakes the air. Before he can decide what this means, or draw his bow to shoot his enemy down, she glances in his direction. “Hi, Jim.”"

Fandom: GOOD OMENS/JAMES BOND
Pairing: James Bond/Crowley
Length: substantial one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] musegaarid
Author Website: her LJ

Why this must be read:

It's painful to pick just one fic for Crossover Day, because GO is such a Little Black Dress for crossing over: not only do you have the humor/crackfic aspect for any modern-day fandom, or the natural mutual-interest factor for any fandom dealing with religious satire, but you also have immortal characters that make any historical fandom fair game. I choose this one, though, because it's time that all GO's allusions to the Cold War, and secret agents having clandestine meetings in St James' Park and the like get their moment in the sun. And this one brings all those links out so beautifully - the version of Bond in question (the point of view character) is mostly Daniel Craig's longing-ridden one, and one particular incident, with one particular supernatural homoerotic encounter with his one true match, will haunt him forever.
