12:30 am DECISIONS AND REVISIONS by ORBYTHESEA (PGish)
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing:Sarah Jane Smith/Eighth Doctor (with the ninth and tenth)
Length: ~2,200 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] orbythesea
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read: After School Reunion, Sarah Jane Smith meets another incarnation of the Doctor and falls in love all over again. A deft, elegant and sad story of secrets kept.

You should read this because of the wonderful way it plays with time and its portrayal of the terrible toll the Time War takes on the Doctor -- and, in some ways, on Sarah Jane. There's a gorgeous switch in perspective at the end that casts new light on both of them.

11:41 am All that was missing by kuyashinaki (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo
Length: 4 400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kuyashinaki
Author Website: don't know
Why this must be read:

I'm not sure what it is about this that makes me love it so much, other than that it feels very right. Tony and Gibbs have been together for a while, and Tony remembers something Gibbs once said. Gibbs doesn't remember. It works nicely within the insecurities of Tony's character.

03:30 pm Birthday Stories by Syntax6 (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: A series of fourteen short stories
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: home of the slug slayer
Why this must be read:

Syntax6 is best known for her long, absorbing case files that include Mulder/Scully romance; however, this fic does not fit into either of those categories, making it just a bit unexpected. These short stories follow canon, through seasons one through seven, with each pair of stories describing either Mulder's or Scully's birthday. Since this is not a show full of happy endings, many are rather melancholy. Please don't let that stop you from reading them. They are small, perfect gems that show us glimpses of the characters' lives off screen, enriching and enlarging our knowledge of them and their world. Though written as a birthday gift for a friend, they are truly a gift for us all.

06:37 pm See Ya by Nash Carter (R)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: none
Length: 16kB
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: HERE
Why this must be read:

It's a death story. It's a death story and you know it for the very beginning, but the emotions between them are here pictured in such a beautiful way that you don't read it – you just live it. It's the only death story I really like.

"You think you've won, don't you? You think because you kept your silence until now, you have defeated me, right? Well, pig..." He leaned closer into Hutch's face, an evil sneer on his own. "Well, pig, that's where you are wrong. True, you took away my chance at preventing Dobey from taking the witness stand. But there is still one more thing I can take away from you." He stood up straight, a look of contempt and sadistic pleasure in his cold eyes.

With an authoritative gesture he told his underling to open the door, and another three of his goons entered, one armed with what seemed to be Hutchs very own Magnum. But that wasn't what made his blood run cold. What really just about killed him was the sight of the other two, who held a third man firmly between them. And if it hadn't been for the dark curls and the familiar Adidas, Hutch wouldn't have recognized his friend.

"Oh, Starsk..." It was barely a whisper; he couldn't get more past the lump in his throat.

07:42 pm Castaways by Lilacsigil (G)
Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: Scott Summers/Jean Grey/Wanda Maximoff (Cyclops/Marvel Girl/Scarlet Witch)
Length: ~3,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil
Author Website: Just LiveJournal, as far as I know.
Why this must be read:

There's a certain type of story in which each of the characters is a little bit misguided, and they all have conflicting goals, and yet the reader is rooting for them all to succeed. It's a very hard situation for a writer to pull off successfully, especially when there's a love triangle involved. In Castaways, [livejournal.com profile] lilacsigil succeeds to perfection. We see the story from the viewpoint of Scott, who is in love with Jean, who is in love with Wanda. I don't want to spoil the relationship dynamics beyond that, except to say that it's more complicated and -- at the same time -- simpler than that.

This is a story about wanting and having it all, and it practices what it preaches. Along with an intriguing relationship story, great dialogue, and note perfect characterizations, Castaways also has a nicely-developed plot, involving a desert island and a supervillain. Who could ask for anything more, and why would they want to?

10:15 pm The Lord Don't Close A Door Less He Opens a Window by executrix (R)
Sorry about that last rec, everyone. I promise to be more careful to check for flocking in the future.

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Kaylee/Bester
Length: 956 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] executrix
Author Website: just her LJ
Why this must be read: This story is a short slice of backstory on how Kaylee came back to Serenity with the soon-to-be-ex-mechanic Bester. The real shine of this piece is most definitely the Kaylee voice. Just as in canon, she's delightfully pragmatic, earnestly straightforward, and unabashedly earthy---and every bit as adorable and funny as she ought to be. Even without ever seeing a single episode of Firefly, I could still love this Kaylee. The grace notes of lovely, realistic detail work and excellent Firefly-style dialect add extra shiny on top, too.
