08:37 am A LEAP IN THE DARK (Teen) by nonelvis
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: The Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble
Length: ~8,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis
Author Website: [Teaspoon link]
Why this must be read: The 10th Doctor and Donna crash an unusual party, and discover they aren't the only uninvited guests.

Frankly, you could do an entire month's worth of recs purely from [livejournal.com profile] nonelvis's Teaspoon listing and it would be varied, entertaining and generally bloody marvellous. This is from the gen end of that queue; a charming and clever adventure with some brain-bending time travel and a lot of very funny lines.

Fandom: LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD
Pairing: McClane/Farrell
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis
Author Website: Words Words Words
Why this must be read:
It's a holiday here in the US, and it's nearly summertime. And that, my friends, means baseball! But that isn't really why I like the story. Yes, Matt and John head out to a ballgame while Matt's recuperating, which may seem just as crazy as you think it might be, especially when you're reading Matt's POV here. He just got shot in the leg, and now John's dragging him to a ball game in a stadium full of forty thousand crazy people?

Baseball can be a surprisingly complicated sport, for all its apparent simplicity. It can be awfully confusing and perhaps even boring for fans of a more action oriented sports. You have to pay attention to really get the subtle nuances of the pitching, the angles the batters are aiming for, and sometimes the most important plays sail right by the casual observer, seeming unimportant in the grand scheme of the game.

But you'd be wrong. And so is Matt. McClane is like baseball, and not just because he plays when it's hot and sweaty.

11:39 am Just Can’t Get Enough by Janni (PG)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam Tyler/Mobile Phone
Length: Short, 800 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon
Author Website: Janni at The Collators’ Den
Why this must be read:

Now what can one say about [livejournal.com profile] jantalaimon? In my self-imposed quest to bring you some of the stranger sides of the Life on Mars fandom, Janni stands in a class of her own. Her fic is generally filled with quirky humour, black comedy and unsettling twists in the tale. She also has a knack for taking accepted fandom tropes and pushing them as far as she can to incredible comedic effect and / or brain breakage.

Here she takes the fact that Sam loves his mobile phone and turns it in to ‘Sam loves his mobile phone’. Throw in a little of the timey wimey wibbley wobbley principle that Life on Mars is based on and you have a classic love story across time, space and possibly sanity as well.

01:18 pm Good Omens for a Lancre Hogswatch, by Dreya Uberwald (R)
Fandom: GOOD OMENS/DISCWORLD
Pairing: Aziraphale/Crowley; an ensemble cast of Discworld characters, including the Witches, the Watch, Sam Vimes and Lady Sybil, King Verence, Susan Sto Helit, etcetera
Length: 4 chapters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dreya_uberwald
Author Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/291528/Igorina

Why this must be read:

Today is the Glorious 25th of May, so I'm reccing a crossover, although it's about the wrong Discworld holiday. GO is the brainchild of two prolific writers, and in the fandom, other works by Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman are often considered to be sort of "cousin" or "sibling" fandoms, and crossovers are common.

What's uncommon is really catching the particular and specific feel of both canons at once, and this story is really more a Discworld story than a GO one, but the addition of a sexually-frustrated Aziraphale and Crowley to the mix produces something alchemically magical. Dreya is one of the funniest writers in the fandom, and this is one of the stories that reeled me into the fandom the hardest (and I hadn't even read any Discworld when I first encountered it years ago). I still CANNOT. STOP. LAUGHING.

09:20 pm Byline AU Series by M. H. E. Priest and Queena Foster (R)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: none
Length: long
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: HERE
Why this must be read:

It's high time for an AU story. I love it when the story is well written, with sensible and plausible plot, with great characters and when they are still Starsky & Hutch. Here we have Starsky – a waiter who tries to apply for a job of a photographer and here we have Hutch – a reporter looking for some brave enough partner who could help him with the biggest story of his career so far. Of course, they are too different and they live in too different worlds to make it easy for any of them.
"Oh, just one more thing, waiter," Hutchinson called after him.

Starsky stopped dead in his tracks, but didn't turn around. His right hand began to curl into a fist and his shoulders to hunch.

"Make sure the wine is
white."

The hand became full fist. The shoulders slumped.
Cool it. You need the dough, and you can't make a scene. He walked stiffly to and through the swinging kitchen doors.

Hutchinson tried to laugh at what he just done to put Starsky in his place beneath him. When the laugh wouldn't come, he spent the next several minutes trying to figure out why. As he ate, he observed the waiter/photographer interact with his customers and the two waitresses. He unexpectedly found himself feeling pangs of jealousy at Starsky's easy and friendly way with everyone. Except him.

It was during dessert of hazelnut biscotti with a double espresso when Hutchinson finally got around to cursing the distance and wariness that money seemed to place between him and everyone in his life. And the same money that now made his divorce settlement that much more painful and contentious.

He pulled his wallet from the inner breast pocket of his jacket. His long, strong fingers grasped a single, but he stopped before he could slide it out.
Shit. I treat people I don't even know better than the people around me. He choked back the lump that appeared out of nowhere in his throat. He found a five and tossed that on the table. But the generous tip didn't ease his shame at his treatment of Starsky.

First, I want to apologize for the lack of recs, I was sick, and my mind was really clouded and barely functional. Yes, even below the usual. So, let's go to the important stuff now: the story!

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos
Length: Barley over 8.300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] killabeez
Author Website: Killa's Adventures in Melodrama
Why this must be read: Here we have a post Endgame story. And a good one, as any story by Killa would be. It's sad, but its sadness has a soft quality, it's a sadness you know will fade in a bittersweetness memory.
The whole story is bittersweet: hard and warm and sad and beautiful and hot. It's a story about love in all its ways, and how love could be painful, and how it could shake us and bring us to our knees in tears. But also, about how it could make us get up, again. And keep going.
