Why this must be read:

This short, poignant fic follows Data in the days after the death of a crewmate and friend. Data is precisely and endearingly himself, and sloanesomething does an excellent with the rest of the crew, as well. Be prepared to miss everyone all over again.

Fandom: STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Pairing: Laren/Deanna
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] quasiradiant
Author Website: poorly kept secrets
Why this must be read:

Ro Laren has always been one of my favourite TNG characters, and quasiradiant does a great job of capturing her in all her prickly-yet-vulnerable glory. This is set shortly after Ro's arrival on the Enterprise. She attracts the attention of Deanna Troi, who is interested in how Ro is getting along, and just plain interested. And if there's anyone on the ship who could use a friend, it's got to be Ro. Her conversation with Troi makes me so gosh darn happy, I can't even tell you. (Another thing that makes me happy: finding good femslash in this fandom!)

10:39 am Precious Illusion by simmysim (PG-13)
I've already recced y'all fics for two of my favorite Marvel ships, Cable/Deadpool and Matt/Foggy. Now, I'm going to live up to my responsibilities as an Iron Man reccer and rec some fics for my OTP, Steve/Tony. Most of my recs will be comics-based, since that's the portion of Iron Man fandom I call home. I'm going to start out with one of my favorites in the fandom, simmysim's Precious Illusion.

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS
Pairing: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark
Length: 4,300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] simmysim
Author Website: simmy's fic on lj

Why this must be read:

Captain America returns from the dead to discover that Tony has upgraded.

Really effectively creepy fic that gives new meaning to the metaphor of grief turning someone into an empty shell, and raises questions about the dividing line between people and machines, and what it is to be human. (happy ending, though, once you get through the angst and disturbingness)

04:41 pm "We'll Sweep Out the Ashes in the Morning" by Ignaz Wisdom
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Vecchio/Kowalski
Length: 19,500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ignazwisdom
Author Website: that boy needs therapy:stuff by ignaz wisdom
Why this must be read: Another classic story which the Crack Van has passed by, and one which is a veritable master-class in how to write an epic and subtle Ray/Ray fic that respects both characters, makes sharp distinctions between their personal styles, and shows their developing interdependency in the context of a tough and eventually heart-breaking case. It also lets them both get over Benton Fraser- both emotionally, and as detectives.

Something had happened up there in Canada -- that much Ray knew. Something big, something serious, something that was still aching and raw. He had no idea how Kowalski had managed to stay alive in undercover gigs for so long; the son of a bitch wore his pain like a hairshirt, like a new tattoo so fresh it was still oozing blood. Normally Ray might've kicked Kowalski when he was down, but getting shot and forced into semi-retirement had mellowed him some, so he didn't say anything. Wasn't like there was much he could say, anyway. After Stella dumped his ass and sent him crawling back to Chicago, he wasn't exactly in a position to sling mud at Kowalski for his failures. After all, neither of them had got the girl in the end. Neither of them had got the Mountie, either. )

08:10 pm Bow shot by lferion, PG
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Characters: None - DM/M implied
Length: 2,325 words
Author on LJ: [personal profile] lferion
Author Website: on HL Fiction
Why this must be read: This is another story I was surprised not to see already in the memories. So after checking twice that it really wasn't there, I had to rectify that oversight. This is a lovely little story that highlights the differences in outlook between the oldest and the youngest characters. I loved the understated humour and the insight in this scene both of the characters and of immortals in general.

"That's a bow?" Richie looked down in something like horror at the deceptively simple strip of wood in Methos' hand. "And you expect to hit the target with it? Maybe if you walked up to it and" he made a club-swinging motion, "literally hit it, I guess."

"I could ask you the same question about the object you have," Methos replied dryly, "except that I have seen what passes for a bow in this day and age." A sardonic eyebrow indicated the complex squiggle of polycarbon and wire propped in its holder at Richie's feet. "And I wouldn't care to try using one of those as a club."

08:33 pm Undemanding by Atalan (Worksafe)
Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI
Pairing: Tsuzuki/Watari
Length: ~2,500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] childofatlantis
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] atalan_fic
Why this must be read:

Because it's fun, in character, and a really nice example of an all too rare pairing. In a series full of relationships that have the angst meter turned up to eleven, Watari/Tsuzuki can be a breath of fresh air. This story shows why. There's a relaxed, easy feel that fits characters very well. Watari especially, as Atalan allows us to see a side of his character other than "hyperactive, wacky mad scientist." Neither he nor Tsuzuki have lost their sense of fun, but they feel like adults here.

09:45 pm Am prionnsa, an t-amadan agus na meirlich by Aithris (PG)
Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Gen or Merlin/Arthur (pre-slash)
Length: ~6600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aithris
Author Website: at her journal
Why this must be read: Continuing in the vein of hard-to-pronounce titles, this story is the one commonly referred to as "the one with the bandits." This fic has everything I like in a story - action and adventure, unlucky disorganized bandits, a great reveal about Merlin's magic, and Arthur's typical "Merlin's an idiot" response--because honestly, when you're captured by bandits, it's not the time to have a row about who's been hiding magic powers.

Arthur glares at Merlin as the shackles click shut over his wrists. 'This is all your fault, you know.' )

09:54 pm Past and Forever by Veronicaluv [Adult]
Fandom: Torchwood
Pairing: Jack/Ianto, Team Torchwood
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] veronicaluv
Author's Website: Unknown

Why this must be read?:

As the author says, "It's a love story". It's nice to see a story with plot that does not bash an individual team member, but still staying true that rule the TW characters are flawed, but work best as a team. Classic hurt/comfort. Explores Ianto's humanity and insecurities without forgetting his strength.

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Kirk/Spock
Length: 6,500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tabled
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] scornandritz
Why this must be read: This story is a beautiful character study of Jim, showing us what's driving him while he's at the Academy. As an added bonus it's told in the most fantastically gruff, affectionate and incredulous Bones voice. *hearts Bones to bits* It also answers the important question: Why exactly is Kirk so determined to beat the Kobayashi Maru? The answer will delight you.

Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Length: 1,000 words

Author Website: when the world is puddle-wonderful
Why this must be read: This is a beautiful snapshot of a friendship suddenly reaching an unexpected tipping point. When I first read this, I was full of squee, because I've wanted this John moment for a long, long time. Rodney's dawning realisation is priceless too.
