Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Anya/Tara, Tara/Spike
Length: longish one-shot

Author Website: Fourteen Lines

Why this must be read:

Because it's so unrelentingly dark.  Goes AU mid-season 6 and shows a world where Tara, Spike, and Anya are spiraling into ugly self-destruction in a completely believable way.  I am not a fan of darkfic but this is good.

What frightens her most, when she thinks too long about it, isn't that this happened at all. Sooner or later, something had to give. After all, with a few notable exceptions, they were only human. And such children, really. What frightens her most is how simple it all seemed. A chain of events, every little piece, grim in its own right, following fast and faster until it was all out of control.

Why this must be read:    Because what’s more appropriate in June than a story about fatherhood?  At least in the U.S. where the third Sunday of June is Father’s Day.

Dad issues come up regularly in canon.  Simon deals with the double-whammy of becoming a weekend father post-divorce just as his son reaches the critical teen years.  Blair wonders about the identity of his unknown father.  Jim’s troubled relationship with his dad in the episode Remembrance.  Little wonder that the subject is a popular fanfic theme.

Appropriately titled, "Threads" weaves various issues concerning fatherhood in and around the relationship of lovers Jim and Blair.  Jim has just arrested a man who killed his abusive father.  Carolyn wants him to father a baby for her and her female lover to raise.  Past sorrows for both men surface to create a long, well-written angsty composite of case story, slice of life and lusty sex.  Enjoy.

Why this must be read:

Are Guy Gardner and Ted Kord friends? This fic explores that question. It deals with the aftermath of Ted and Guy's boxing match during JLI. More than that, it's about Guy and Ted reaching a tenuous understanding of one another, and their uncertainties, flaws and strengths. It's about their difficulty relating to one another, despite the things they have in common.

Duskdog's character voices are absolutely pitch perfect, capturing their banter, flaws, and mutual distrust perfectly. This fic does a wonderful job of capturing a snapshot of the relationship between these characters at a moment in time, and we come away from it with a greater understanding of the characters and their actions.

Fandom: DANNY PHANTOM
Pairing: Danny/Sam, Lancer/OC
Length: 20,000

Why this must be read: Lancer finding out that Danny Fenton is Danny Phantom is practically a genre in its own right, and this is one of the best examples of it. Lancer’s confusion, curiosity, and conflicted morals are perfectly blended, and this characterization of him has been very influential. The take on an older Danny is also excellently done, and, okay, characterization is excellent across the board.

09:41 pm Two Guys with Guns By Aimless (PG)
Hi there! Sorry for the late start and I'll be rec Mag Seven this month.

Fandom: Magnificent Seven
Pairing: Ezra, team ATF
Length: 2471 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author's website: http://aimless210.tripod.com/ Aimless' Little corner of the web

This first rec is a new story that I found very funny. Surely I'm not the only one, so let the author know.

Basically, Ezra is forced to take a vacation.

The fic is at
http://aimless210.tripod.com/twoguys.html
or
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5100937/1/Two_Guys_With_Guns

Sample-"Apparently, some FBI pencil pusher with more time on his hands than brains in his head had discovered that Ezra had accumulated an obscene amount of vacation time. Since he was still technically employed by the FBI, he had no choice but to comply. No matter how he tried to sell it, the powers that be would not buy the idea that any of the three weeks he’d taken to recover from the gunshot wound he’d sustained in the McMeyers bust six months ago could be considered actual vacation."

Enjoy!

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Ten/River Song
Length: short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] calapine
Author Website: fic tag (multifandom)
Why this must be read: I wasn't too hot on River Song as she appeared in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, but after I read this fic I realized it was because I hadn't gotten to know her well enough yet. This fic gives us a plausible reason why she and Ten would have gotten married, and how she learned the Doctor's true name. I love the way [livejournal.com profile] calapine takes the framework Moffat constructs in the show and builds upon it, giving them a history and a life that's made bittersweet because we know how it turns out.

He plays forever and imagines that she will outlive him.

He teaches her how to travel by mirrors and to beware of statues and the differences between time and pain and death.

He tells her not to be afraid of the dark.

And then he shows her how to sew.
