Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series Pairing: Spike/Xander Author on LJ: herself_nyc_fic Author Website: FIC by HERSELFWhy this must be read: Take a post season seven Xander and a post-NFA Spike, have them meet unexpectedly and the result you get is a ton of angst. Spike and Illyria are the sole survivors of the battle against The Circle of The Black Thorn. Half in despair, mourning Angel, Spike isn't ready for the appearance of a drastically altered Xander in Los Angeles. Hot smut, brilliant characterization, and glimmer of hope make this a must read. Harris was a mess, but he was a succulent, compelling, gorgeous mess. The Approved Mode of Payback

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS Pairing: Steve Rogers/Tony Stark Length: ~4,800 Author on LJ: crimsonquillsAuthor Website: crimsonquills.comWhy this must be read:Diplomatic Relations is a wonderful take on a time-honored sci-fi trope - you know, the one where aliens make them have sex. It's unusual in the fandom for featuring a sex scene with Steve bottoming, and it's also scorchingly hot, as crimsonquills' pr0n fics always are. And despite the rife-with-potential-dub-con-issues scenario, there is no questionable consent in this fic -- Steve and Tony are both very willing indeed. Diplomatic Relations

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Pairing: Adama/Roslin, others Length: 5,000 words Author on LJ: aprilleigh24 Author Website: At her LJ Why this must be read: Sometimes dark fic is what you need. Something deeply angsty, but not over the top. Angst with beautiful writing and accurate characterization. This is one of those stories. It presents four different alternate universes in the future, all of them grim, but realistic. ( William Adama was no stranger to guilt. )One Truth, Four Outcomes

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Kowalski/Fraser Length: 2659 words Author on LJ: brignatine1Author Website: (or a link to where more of their fic is archived) In memories at Live JournalWhy this must be read: To quote Ray Kowalski, "when I start understanding the wolf, that is just unsettling" and because Brigantine communicates this epiphany brilliantly. "For heaven's sake, I can't tell him that!"
Dief does one of his little wolf-warbles, and Fraser squeaks, "Good lord, are you unhinged? I can't possibly tell him that, either! It's worse than the first! Such a revelation would prove disastrous! It would ruin--"
Ray steps into the kitchen. "What's a disastrous revelation?"
Fraser starts guiltily, "Nothing!"
Uh-huh. Move along, move along, nothing to see here, ignore the Mountie behind the curtain.
Dief grumbles pointedly - and was that an annoyed snort? Oh, yeah. Then I Got On This Bus, But I Left My Luggage At The Station

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: none; Simon-centric gen Length: approximately 3,500 words Author on LJ: 2ndary_authorAuthor Website: fic tagWhy this must be read:This is a poignant, sharply observed story of Simon realizing that his old life is gone, that he's not the same man he was on Osiris. "Sometimes, wild birds will attack the more exotic ones," Simon had explained, just as his father had explained it to him when he’d started keeping them as pets. As a child, Simon had figured that heaven must be pretty much like the east balcony, where Father kept gloriously plumed pets in giant rosewood cages amid small fountains and greenery. As an adult...well, it was still a pretty thought. "Their bright colors attract predators to food sources and—"
"They’re different," River interrupted, her voice low but fierce enough to silence the others. "They’re brighter. And stranger. They’ve been places, and they remember things. The other birds, the dull ones—they’re jealous."It's beautifully written and has a palpable weight to it, like the boxes Simon rifles through. Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Merlin/Arthur (only a smidge slashier than canon really; nothing explicit) Length: ~5841 words Author on LJ: casspeachAuthor Website: Casspeach.comWhy this must be read: There's something about fierce loyalty and protectiveness that does it for me (and a lot of other people) every time. So, I'm going to be recommending a handful of stories that feature Protective!Arthur, who invariably becomes Possessive!Arthur, which often leads to Arthur getting a clue about his real feelings towards his manservant, and more often than not ends up with Arthur challenging somebody with a sword over Merlin. (No subtext in this fandom. Not at all.) Also, this is a fandom with a MANSERVANT. And there was a Knee-Walking Challenge. "Do you know how to walk on your knees, Merlin?" is a canonical line from Episode 1. There can really be nothing bad from the combination of these things. Go forth and read. ( Merlin is silent, barely flinching even though it has to hurt. 'Apparently someone else agrees that I need to practice walking on my knees,' he says eventually. )Read the story and feedback the author: Obeisance

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Blair/Jim Length: 2500 words Author on LJ: audraroseAuthor Website: fic master list at her LJ Why this must be read: Because it’s a lovely, light piece guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Audra Rose is more well-known for her darker Sentinel fic, such as the superb “Summer Sea” trilogy and “Sum of the Parts”. But she can do comedy with the best of them, as demonstrated in this short story written for last year’s ts_ficathons . It starts with a friend leaving a baggie of unknown substance on Blair's desk for safe-keeping. Blair is not at all assured by the statement that “It's not illegal! In most countries... just don't smoke it, okay? …. Or open it. Or... travel to the Phillipines.” Ah but it’s too late; the baggie’s been opened and, like Pandora’s box, the damage is done. Blair is worried that he’ll be arrested, but the consequences are much more dire. You’ll have to read the story to find out what happens to our favorite observer.

Fandom: STARGATE: ATLANTIS Pairing: McKay/Sheppard, McKay/Keller Length: 26,000 words Author on LJ: toomuchplorAuthor Website: toomuchplor's fanfictionWhy this must be read: The thing about Rodney is that, really? He's middle-aged. And Jennifer is really kind of not. As well as a tension-filled mission, this story has Rodney slowly realising the different paths his life could take, and which one he wants most. It's also by toomuchplor, which means it's got fantastic characterisation and dialogue that will make you LOL. What are you waiting for? *shoos you off* Waiting For My Real Life To Begin

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT Pairing: Kirk/Spock Length: 3,400 words Author on LJ: svilleficrecsAuthor Website: My Fic @ del.icio.usWhy this must be read: One of my favourite types of fanfic is when an author asks, "What if...?" about some unexplored aspect of canon, and then takes me some place completely unexpected. In this lovely story, Kate does exactly that, showing the consequences of Kirk and Spock Prime's mindmeld and how the effects ripple out into the future for reboot Kirk and Spock.
