Why this must be read:

Maddy is an amazing, amazing writer, and I'm sure I'll be reccing her again this month. This amazing little fic sees Dougie waking up as a girl, freaking out, and the others Not Helping. Brilliantly funny and utterly adorable, Maddy captures the boys' personalities perfectly.

Summary: There's been a murder. So what's behind door number three? (format: murder mystery in the style of a panel show. Yes, yes, really.)

Why this must be read:

First, ref. the summary. Okay. This is crack!AU and really, those are two genres I approach warily. It is simply too easy for a writer to get so enamored by the idea of what they are writing that they forget about things like, oh, characterization. Not so much with FiAndyFic -- the combined forces of Fi and Andy make for amazing results, and while they are known for their dark and downright evil fic-making, Andy created this little gem which is not only 100% in character but just...just...FUNNY! Hysterically, ball-busting FUNNY! Rolling on the floor, tears streaming down your face FUNNY! I think so, anyway. It is wrong in a thousand ways, which makes it oh-so-right!

Warnings for foul language (Gene Hunt, oh, Gene Hunt, you potty mouth) and the real possibility that you will laugh so hard you pee yourself. I mean it. Don't say I did not warn you!

I should apologize for reccing this, not because it isn't BRILLIANT (it so totally IS!), but because you do have to have a familiarity with the characters of LoM-UK in order to get it. If you are new to LoM, this probably isn't the fic for you to start with -- it is outrageously funny, though, so I feel bad about warning anyone off it. *frowns at self* Never mind, read it anyway, okay?

STORY: Give Us a F**king Clue

06:07 pm Jigsaw Pieces by florahart (R)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Severus Snape/Filius Flitwick
Length: 8,050
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] florahart
Author Website: Fics by Flora
Why this must be read:
This is a lovely, moving portrait of an odd couple who, through the author's wit and charm and careful delineation of their characters, turn out to be not so very odd after all. It's the retrospective story of Flitwick's' relationship with Snape, up to and beyond the events of that dreadful last year. The fic doesn't condescend to Filius' size or marginal role in the series; his POV is warm, well-mannered, and intelligent, and the banter between the two is a delight. Flora is one of those endowed with an effortless gift of gab, the ability to make her dialogue trenchant and funny and true. She depicts Snape as an adult, a man with an astringent sense of humor who proves to be excellent company if you don't mind a little snark with your tea. He keeps his secrets until the end, though, which causes a breach and costs him Flitwick's trust. And by then, of course, it's too late.

The fic walks a fine line between melancholy and humor, and through the blessings of magic it allows for forgiveness and companionship even after death. Flora's solution is perfectly suited to Flitwick's innate civility and inquisitive mind, to Snape's Slytherin nature, his desire to be remembered and known. It leaves you feeling soothed rather than sad, even though the smile is bittersweet, and wishing you could spend more time with them both. Because Flora's knack for storytelling and attention to her characters will keep you wanting more.

07:14 pm Earthly Attractions (Bright As Day Remix) by Phoebe Zeitgeist
Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI
Pairing: Tatsumi/Watari
Length: ~3,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] p_zeitgiest
Author Website: Fic archive
Why this must be read:

This is a remix of my previous rec, and it must be read for several reasons. First of all, it's a brilliant story. Second, it's a fantastic example of a great remix. Phoebe takes the same basic plot, and brings her own unique voice to it.

There's a wonderful mix of the magical and the mundane in this story. The fairytale narrative the runs through serves to remind us that Meifu is an otherworldly place. And yet the tone of the story makes it clear that these people suffer in ways not too different from us, though their problems may be more dramatic. It's an excellent representation of a world populated by preternaturally beautiful ghosts, who nonetheless have to worry about budgets, office supplies, and that sometimes awkward transition from just coworkers to lovers.

A pitch-perfect Sam struggling to let go of something that didn't happen in the wake of Daniel's return. Beautifully written.

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Illya/Napoleon
Length: 8,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] severa
Author Website: Geometric Fandom

Why this must be read:

This fic combines the zany plots, over-the-top characters, and general goofiness of the best episodes of the series, but with some wonderfully light-hearted sexual tension and happy resolution. There's no angst here, just hijinks and cuteness. The banter between Napoleon and Illya is great, and Napoleon's city-boy squeamishness on the farm was absolutely delightful.

Excerpt:

"You don't seem to be very fond of rural life," Napoleon noted. "What made you move out here in the first place?"

"Well, it was Charles' dream to own a little B&B in the country. Who am I to deny him his dream? Besides, I'd follow the lug anywhere. You know how it is. You know, I felt a great deal like Eva Gabor. Good-BYE, city life!" He said with a wave as he turned on heel and closed the door behind him.

Napoleon raised his eyebrows at Illya. "And I'm sure he just adores a penthouse view," he said in an odd mixed imitation of Gabor and Danny's camp accent.
