Fandom: MauricePairing: Maurice/Clive Author on LJ: haydenthorne Author Website: N/A Why this must be read: Insightful and well-characterised, this fic deals with Maurice's feelings after Clive's marriage, as well as the latter's denial. I especially like how the ending alleviates the overall sadness, showing us that there are better things waiting for Maurice. ( Read an excerpt )A Breath

Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Merlin/Arthur, Gwen/Morgana Length: Novella Author on LJ: stripedpetuniaAuthor Website: fanfiction tag for waketosleep on DreamWidth Why this must be read: What a fantastic take on a post-apocalyptic zombie-filled world this is, fusing the characters of Merlin with the premise of 28 Days Later. It's long, action-packed, often violent, but with wonderful characterisations and a gorgeous love story at its heart. I didn't expect to like this, but to my surprise I found myself loving it, and if you give it a chance, I think you will too. Abide with Me (links to the series tag, scroll down for chapter one) WARNING: Violence, including sexual assault and death.

Fandom: Firefly Pairing: Gen, Jayne, Simon Length: 4800 Author on LJ: ana_grrlWebsite: Ana FicWhy this must be read: There's zombies, snark, apocalyptic undertones, and it's written by ana_grrl. What more could a reader want? Set post Miranda, the Firefly 'Verse has another problem - there's a zombie outbreak. The story told from Jayne's POV, is interspersed with a history of how the zombie threat came about. I love the contrast between the scientist/politician's attitude and that of Simon and Jayne as they fight off the zombies. As usual the author provides spot on characterisations combined with a believable and totally readable story. ( Excerpt )An end has a start

Fandom: LORD OF THE RINGsPairing:Denethor/Finduilas, Thorongil/FinduilasLength: War & Peace, but much more interestingAuthor on LJ: N/AAuthor Website: Henneth AnnunWhy this must be read:
Ecthelion is favoring an unknown army captain - maybe for high political position. Denethor needs to marry and produce an heir, but can't find anyone suitable. Finduilas is finally in Minas Tirith, but her weak health strikes again. While families take sides in a silent, subtle political battle that will determine who wields the power in Gondor for the next hundred years, Orcs terrorize Ithilien, Corsairs plot a devastating blow against Gondor and the Shadow strikes terror into the hearts of men. The way that Denethor and Thorongil interact is amazing and believable. Both sides are treated with compassion and sympathy. I love how Anglachel has portrayed Thorongil. He isn't the experienced, world-weary ranger we meet in Lord of the Rings. But he will be, and Anglachel shows one step on that road. I especially love Anglachel's Denethor. This is a man who could hold a land together while the world crumbles. This is a man who would turn to anything in order to save his people. This the man of determination and despair, of great capabilities and great faults, that we meet in the trilogy.
The detail in this story is amazing. They move the story along and pull it together, turning Tolkien's world into a land of people with a history. The tales of the Eldar and the Valar feel real in these stories, and are treated as we treat history today. The multiple plots are intense and well-crafted, even by professional standards. This is a Gondor that ruled the world. This is MiddleEarth in glory and despair. Hands of the King

Fandom: POPSLASH Pairing: gen, AJ-centric Length: short story Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: backstreet fan fictionWhy this must be read: In honor of this month being AJ month in the popslash fandom. Yes, more genfic, but I promise it's the last one! Izzy is another author whom I very much admire; this was one of the first Backstreet fanfics I ever read, and I fell in love with it. It's an extended AJ character study, who is a pretty complicated character to attempt, and it's so spot-on it almost hurts. The only constant in life is change. For AJ McLean, no truer words had ever been spoken. AJ meditates upon these words, and watches Shark Week with Nick. And comes to some conclusions. It's creative, concise, and makes you read between the lines and listen for what isn't being said, which we so often have to do--particularly in this fandom--just to grasp at the truth. ...In school the following year I told everyone that my father was a mercenary overseas and that I was actually in the witness protection program, while my mother was in the FBI and working undercover. My real name wasn't Alex, it was Antonio, but if you called me that you might be in trouble. I carried a briefcase for a couple of weeks. I didn't have many friends.
I changed my handwriting frequently in school. Almost as often as I changed my story.
I seemed to have a problem expressing myself.
Flash forward. Had things changed?
Less than ten years later I was going by AJ and was surrounded by four guys who seemed to want to accept me for who I was. That was another sort of escape for me, only I wasn't really too sure who that me was that I was supposed to be showing them. I was a little too big to be playing Zorro, magic didn't work, and the last time I had tried to be Superman I had sprained my wrist.
It seemed like AJ was going to be something a little new. Something to escape to, not escape from. And retiring AJ wouldn't be as easy as taking off the cape or throwing away the mask. AJ was a little more permanent. AJ was a tattoo....Me, Myself, and I
