06:27 am Take That Moon and Wrap it in Cellophane by lozenger8 (PG)
Howdy folks, I'm Xela, I'll be Psyching it up for you. For those who'd like a primer on this awesomely fantastic fandom, [livejournal.com profile] rispacooper put together a lovely overview complete with pictures and everything! I'm a Shawn/Lassiter gal—it is just way too much fun getting those two together—but I have endeavored to find a few things outside of that pairing for your enjoyment. Now, on to the wonderfully whimsical world of PSYCH!

Fandom: PSYCH
Pairing: Shawn/Lassiter
Length: 2,436 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lozenger8
Author Website:
Why this must be read: In the past month, Lassiter's had seven failed first dates and Shawn feels bad because he feels great.

This is Psych at its fanciful best, and Shawn at his most meddlesome. And Lassie is—canonically and fictionally—a rather hilariously morose drunk. He also rides pillion on Shawn's motorcycle...and that isn't really a double entendre for anything, except how it totally is. Beautiful characterizations all around, and a really fun read! Involves the phrase 'Shawntacular' and making sure Lassiter's car doesn't eat all the popcorn.

08:27 am Imber [Latin: rain, storm] by yenneffer (PG-13)
Hello everyone, I'm [profile] sandystarr88and I'll be sharing some of my favorite Star Wars stories with you this month. Fandom-wise I'm a Prequel fan in general (and an Anakin/Obi-Wan fan in particular), so my recs are going to mostly focus on those areas with some het, gen, and Original Trilogy-era fics thrown in for good measure.

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Gen; Anakin Skywalker
Length: 651
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yenneffer
Author Website: [profile] sin_snippet
Why this must be read:

Jabiim, Jabiim, Jabiim; if you're not familiar with the EU that came out between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith then all you really need to know about Jabiim is that it was bad, the Republic got their asses handed to them and it was probably one of the lowest points of the entire Clone Wars. The amount of dead Jedi at the end of the battle could easily equate the battle to more of a massacre; Anakin was one of the few that survived Jabiim, and it was believed at the time that Obi-Wan was among the dead.

Anakin was still a Padawan when these events took place, and [profile] yenneffer was absolutely perfect in her portrayal of someone who is still so young, and who has to lock away his grief in order to fight on. The author's prose was so poetic, and haunting; the whole fic hit me like a punch in the gut.

It rained. It rained. And it rained.

Never ending wetness, clothes drenched in sweat and muddy water, cold drops dipping from his short hair on his face, from the treacherous Padawan braid onto his back, under his tunics-

(and he never was more cold in his whole life and he wanted to scream, rage at the disgusting, howling winds)-

He never wanted to see the rain in his life again.

Hey everyone! I'm Eve, and I'll be driving the van this week. BSG may be over, but great fic is still alive and well. I personally ship Adama/Roslin and Six/Baltar. However, I am open to all pairings and genres, so you'll probably see lots of different things from me.

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA
Pairing: Caprica Six/Head!Baltar
Length: 6,000 words
Author on lj: [info]beccatoria
Author Website:
Her music vids.
Why this must be read:

This story has been recced pretty heavily in the fandom, but in case anyone hasn't had the privilege of reading it, I thought I'd rec it here. This is pretty much the quintessential post-finale fic. It goes slightly AU, because it introduces the concept that they Cylons can never die. So we follow Caprica Six as she observes the evolution of the human race over thousands of years. It's heartbreaking and beautifully written. I dare you not to cry at least once while reading it. Although it is *just* a fanfic, I found that it raises some really compelling questions about the price of immortality. It also features lots of Caprica Six/Head!Baltar interaction, which makes it even better. So, what are you waiting for? Read and enjoy.

Hi all! I'm [livejournal.com profile] neshel and I'll be driving the Heroes Van for August!

I have a wee obsession, and his name is Sylar. As such, he will be in most, if not all (I haven't finished deciding yet), of the fics I will be reccing this month.

Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Peter/Sylar
Length: 16k in 2 parts
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] entangled_now
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] library_of_sol Fic Masterlist
Why this must be read:

I have been a big fan of [livejournal.com profile] entangled_now's fic, in several fandoms, for a long time now; however, there is one fic that always jumps to the forefront of mind when I think of her, and this is it.

Written from Peter's point of view, this fic takes place post V2 in the sparse, bleak setting of an all white cell, with a simple clear divider seperating him from his fellow prisoner: Sylar. Being captured and experimented on is a popular theme in the Heroes fanfic world, but this fic stands out prominently among them. Peter's panic, his despair, and the way he teeters on the edge of insanity is beautifully characterized. The connection he forms with Sylar, that they form with each other out of necessity, is deftly woven. The characterization displayed through Peter's thoughts and a series of conversations is brilliant.

This is a dark, harsh fic, that pulls no punches, but I promise you it is worth reading through to the end.

Hallo, it's me again :)

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: none
Length: ~ 13 650 words
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: HERE
Why this must be read:

I rec this story only for one reason. In my opinion there is/are the best death scene/s ever written. Considering it's NOT a death story it's quite an achievement. It's a little AU and a little Sci-Fi, but all beautifully wrapped in S&H.

"How bad is it?"

"Hutch is dead," Brady said, choking back the lump in his throat.

"Oh, God." Donnelley ran a hand over his eyes and then put that hand on Brady's shoulder. "You're calling Dobey?"

Brady nodded. "Starsky's a mess. He needs somebody who knows how to handle this. I can't help him."

Donnelley shook his head and turned back to his task while Brady picked up the mike.

"This is Baker 12," he said to the dispatcher. "I need a tac two patch to Captain Dobey. It's an emergency."

"Roger, Baker 12," she said. In a moment, there was a click and Dobey's voice came on.

"What is it?" he barked.

"Captain, this is John Brady. Starsky needs you. He needs you right now," Brady said, his voice trembling in spite of himself.

A moment of silence, then Dobey said, much more gently, "What happened, John?"

"It's ... it's Hutch, Captain."

Another silence, longer this time. "How bad?" Dobey said at last.

"Cap, he's, he's -- " Brady couldn't bring himself to say the words. He just gave Dobey the address.

"No," Dobey said slowly.

01:41 pm Thrice, Twice, Once More (The Backspin Mix) by n_e_star (G)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: First Doctor/Donna Noble
Length: One-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] n_e_star
Author Website: Fanfiction Master List
Why this must be read: This fan fiction is a remix of Once More, With Martians by [livejournal.com profile] biichan, written for [livejournal.com profile] remixredux09. I adore how this remix fixes a plot hole in the original fanfic (which I also liked) that I didn't even see before reading this: i.e., that if the First Doctor knew Donna, why didn't the Tenth Doctor recognize her? In this remixed version, he does.

Hello everyone! I'm [livejournal.com profile] alpaca4eva and I'll be driving the van for Harry Potter this month. It's my first time behind the wheel, so bear with me. This month I'll be reccing a wide variety of gen fic. Most of my recs will be oneshots (they may be short, but they're still good), but I'll throw in a chaptered fic every once in a while. So, just sit back and enjoy the ride!

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Characters: Fred, George, Remus
Length: 3,269 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] templa_otmena
Author Website: Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

This is from way back in '03, but it's still one of my favorite oneshots out there. It's one of those missing scenes from Prisoner of Azkaban involving Fred, George, and Lupin that we all wanted to see.

While Professor Lupin is dozing off in one of his Defense Against the Dark Arts classes after a full moon, Fred and George disscuss their plans of giving the Marauder's Map to Harry as well as muse about the possible identities of their beloved Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs. Little do they know that they don't have to search too far to find out.

Hi, Callisto here. It's my second time driving The Sentinel, and I'm looking forward to the chance to reread and share some more favourites.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Length: 36k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] resonant8 and [livejournal.com profile] kassrachel
Author Website: Trickster (Kass) Trickster (Res)
Why this must be read:

Because of the banter, man, the banter. If ever I need a shot of razor sharp wit Jim and Blair style, Resonant is one of the writers I turn to. I adore in-character back and forth, and this delightful story has it in spades. Blair thinks he’s discovered something new about Walt Whitman, whereas in truth he ends up discovering something about himself and his own senses – care of Jim, a blindfold, and a gorgeously HOT first time scene.

Banter, blindfolds and Whitman... it doesn’t get much better than this.

"Do you suppose Whitman could have been a Sentinel, Jim?"

"Do I think who was a what?"

"Whitman. Walt. You know, the poet--"

"Anthropologists are reading poetry now? Did they discover a colony of poets in South America, all squatting around campfires in loincloths and --"

"Fuck you," Blair said, looking up from the book and grinning. "Shauna lent it to me. I thought it would be a nice gesture to, like, actually read it. But it's really good, it's a lot better than I expected."

"'Leaves of Grass.' Isn't that the one Clinton ..."

"Yeah, OK, Jim, let's not make this any more tawdry than it already is, all right?"

Hello! I'm your new driver for the Firefly van this month! I'm probably a little too excited about this seeing as this is my first time posting here. So, when it comes to Firefly I don't have a strong preference for any pairing. The canon supports so many possibilities. What you'll probably see this month is Simon/Mal, Mal/Inara, and Kaylee/Simon, with some Gen thrown in for good measure. So, without further ado, my first rec! :D

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: GEN - focuses on Book but with a smidge of Kaylee/Simon
Length: 3,500 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] profcricket
Author Website: Fanfiction List
Why this must be read:  I've always been intrigued by the background of Shepherd Book.  This story is a beautiful character study that looks into Books background showing us what his previous profession was and why he left.  It's subtle and haunting, especially the section that takes place on Serenity

Hi! I'm Lipton and I'll be your SPN Crack Van driver this month. I've been in the fandom since the first season of the show so I'll be reccing stories from all across the temporal continuum. The vast majority of this month's recs are Gen with a hefty helping of AU.

I've really been looking forward to driving the van and I hope you enjoy the ride!

Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zillah975

Why this must be read: Dean and John survive a hunt only for even more horrible things to happen. This one'll kick you in the gut and squeeze your heart dry in that way that only great Winchester-fic can.

07:38 pm Guilty Until Proven Innocent by Keerawa (R)
Hi, I'm [profile] lucifuge_5  and I'm your due South [livejournal.com profile] crack_van driver for August. Fraser/Kowalski is the pairing of my heart although I do like other dS pairings (canon and non). My goal for this month is to offer a grab bag of different genres (including gen) and lengths as well as classic fics and lesser known ones.

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing:  Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 13, 200 words posted in 3 chapters.
Warnings: AU fic, major character death (off screen), violence, m/m sexuality.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] keerawa
Author Website:  Keerawa's due South fan fiction index
Why this must be read:    Written for a harlequin challenge, Guilty Until Proven Innocent gives us a fantastic reworking of one of the most important story arcs in the dS fandom: Fraser's disastrous relationship with one Victoria Metcalf. In this fic, Fraser is on trial for murder while Ray Kowalski, a former-Chicago-cop-turned-private-investigator tries to prove the disgraced Mountie's innocence.

Keerawa has written a story that remains true to due South canon even as it drips with noir. Also, because, this is [livejournal.com profile] keerawa , well, things are not all sunshine and bunnies which just ramps up the casefic aspect of the story in ways that are suspenseful. Additionally, this fic has two endings. The second one being so dark that the author herself "
almost didn't publish it."

Hi! I'm [livejournal.com profile] webbgirl. I'll be your driver for NCIS this month. I'm a first time driver, but long time reader. I'm mainly a Gibbs/DiNozzo girl, but I'll be attempting to spread the love through various sections of the fandom.

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo
Length: Short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] kelly_girl
Why this must be read:
Jethro knows a thing or two about obsession and how it can take over your life. He’d learned the patience it took to track and kill when he was a sniper. His current job was practically his life so yeah, he and obsession were at times, up close and personal. However, he never thought Tony would become something he’d add to that list.

This is *such* a perfect insight into Gibbs's psyche as well as his relationship with Tony. [livejournal.com profile] kelly_girl does an amazing (and mind blowingly *hot*) job at giving us a look Gibbs' obsession for Tony.

08:53 pm Sweet Nothings for the Numb by Amal Nahurriyeh (NC-17)
Howdy! I'm Maidenjedi, back for what I believe is my third time reccing The X-Files fic on Crack Van. My tastes run the gamut in this fandom, and I honestly can't predict for you what will strike my fancy. Except to say, of course, that I still am a huge fan of the minor and fan-maligned characters in the series, so expect some of that this month from me.

To start with, I thought I'd give you one of the "new classics" in the fandom.

Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Length: 10,000+ words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] amalnahurriyeh
Author Website: Livejournal
Why this must be read: Amal is one of the "new" authors in the fandom, but has established herself as one of the best of all time with her lyrical writing. So to start with, you need to read this to "get" the "new" X-Files realm and the powerful writing that has come out in the last year and a half. This is old school, though. Amal takes on Scully, post-"Emily," some of the trickiest canon to navigate. She establishes Scully's scarred and raw emotional state directly after the curtain closes on the episode, so fair warning to all who venture: this includes infertility trauma and dark, unhappy sex. This is Mulder and Scully during some of the most trying times in their partnership, professionally but especially on a personal level.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm an angst junkie, but this goes beyond usual angst and explores Scully and Mulder on a deep, true level. Frankly, I've never read them from a more human point-of-view.

You do need a working knowledge of the show up through season five to get the plot, but the emotion is enough to make this readable for anyone remotely familiar with the show. Again, warnings: dark and graphic sex, infertility trauma. Possibly triggery if you've been down that road.

09:22 pm Rationale by Geekwriter (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Warnings: m/m sexuality
Length: Short
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] geekwriter143
Author Website: Indulgence
Why this must be read:   Because Benton owning and using a sex toy is just...irresistible.

So it happened that Fraser went online and ended up with a very tempting purchase. This is a hella hot masturbation PWP that rings true because [livejournal.com profile] geekwriter143  holds onto Fraser's voice, to the core of how he thinks, even as Fraser tries to explain to himself why it's perfectly okay to own a dildo. Midway through the fic, Fraser's own train of thought dissolves as he gives into the fantasy of RayK topping him. Hotness.

10:05 pm In Between Be and Begin by Merelyfic (NC-17)
It's [livejournal.com profile] stinglikeabee, taking the DC Comics van for a joyride again! It's a pleasure to once again showcase fics that deserve wider readership, as well spotlight lesser-known characters. So buckle up, sit tight, and enjoy the ride!

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Kon-El/Tim Drake
Length: 3900
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merelyfic
Author Website: LJ
Why this must be read:

First: this contains spoilers for Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds. If you haven't read this mini-series or haven't heard the recent news and wish to remain spoiler-free, I must reluctantly turn you away. For those already in the know, [livejournal.com profile] merelyfic's In Between Be and Begin will soothe the craving whilst waiting for Adventure Comics #3. What elevates this fic to possibly be the definitive fanon version of that upcoming issue is the lack of sappy melodrama, the poignant interaction between the two young men, and the addition of some hot sex. Read it, and be reminded of why Kon-El and Tim Drake work so well as a pairing.
