09:52 am Anticipation by Elise Madrid (NC-17)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon Solo / Illya Kuryakin
Length: 29K
Author on LJ: [personal profile] gilda_elise
Author Website: None that I know of, but a lot of her stuff can be found at The Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse
Why this must be read: This is such a lovely story. As in all of her work, the author is able to capture the nuances and voices of the characters as well as the overall feel of U.N.C.L.E. the organization. I must admit I had a hard time deciding which story by [personal profile] gilda_elise to recommend, as I adore all of her work, but "Anticipation" is an unabashedly romantic first time story with such a delightful twist I simply had to share this one with you today.

Here's a small taste:

"Are you sure he means right now?" Napoleon had asked.

"Those were his exact words," the woman, Lisa, had responded, sympathy lacing her words but refusing Napoleon's badge nevertheless. "He wants you in his office, pronto."

Napoleon had made a face, put his badge back on and, collecting Illya with a short nod, started back down into the bowels of UNCLE headquarters. He dropped Illya off at their shared office and continued alone to find out why he had been summoned.

Four days off. They should have known better. But they had both been so looking forward to the time together, time to explore the change in their relationship that had so recently come about.

Illya smiled despite himself. They'd been dancing around each other for months, but either from fear of rejection or plain, old cold feet, neither had been willing to make the first move.

Funny how almost losing someone tended to put everything in perspective.

01:36 pm The Great Pretender by Wuemsel (R)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: none
Length: 3 879 words
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: HERE
Why this must be read:

This story shows how much Hutch needed Starsky after what happened in The Fix, how much he hurt and fought with the inner demons that haunted him every day. The title says everything. How can you pretend to be yourself if you don't remember who you were?

No, I won't call him. Won't bother him with this. He's done enough. He's...

"Oh god what am I gonna do," he whispered, rolled onto his side, curled up on himelf. He couldn't recall ever having felt so damn miserable in his entire life. Not even when Starsky had found him. Not even at Huggy's. Not even when his whole body had screamed in pain, had writhed in agony. No, not even then.

That had only been his body. What was screaming now was his soul. And it just wouldn't stop.

Of course he knew what was happening to him. His mind knew. He was a cop, he knew about the effects of drug abuse.

Depressions. Despair.

The mind had become as addicted to the drug as the body had. And, yes, he'd cleaned his body off the stuff. The pain he felt wasn't real. The cold he felt was just his imagination.

He needed to also clean his mind. He knew that. And he knew he couldn't do it alone.

Yet...

I don't want to call him. I don't want to see that look in his eyes again. I couldn't endure it. I'm...

He squeezed his eyes shut against the thought, but it came, anyway. Worthless.

Not worth Starsky's friendship. Not worth the loving care he'd experienced before. Not worth anything.

02:22 pm Untitled drabble by honorh (Unrated but PG at most)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Gen
Length: Drabble
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] honorh
Author Website: I'm not sure if all of [livejournal.com profile] honorh's fanfic is collected in one place, but try her FanFiction.net Account, the Fanfic Tag on her Livejournal, and her Account at A Teaspoon and an Open Mind for a start.
Why this must be read: Realizing that reccers in regular fandoms are limited to a maximum of 12 fic recs per month, I usually wouldn't "waste" a rec for a such a short piece. However, this ficlet is so fantastic, that I couldn't resist. In this story, [livejournal.com profile] honorh turns the entire genre of self-insert fic on its head. Instead of Mary Suing herself into a story, "our heroine" reacts . . . pretty much like all of us would react upon meeting the Doctor (and never want to admit to ourselves): somewhat awkward, not entirely helpful, and less cool than our dog. In addition to keeping herself in-character, the author also presents wonderful versions of Nine, Rose, and Jack.

02:33 pm Returning to the Scene by likeadeuce (PG-13)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Renee Montoya, Marcus Driver, Josie MacDonald
Length:1504
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
Author Website: List of fanfic
Why this must be read:

Returning to the Scene reintroduces Renee Montoya, one of the leading characters in Gotham Central, to her former colleagues of Gotham Central. For those who haven't had a chance to read the short-lived Gotham Central title, the book focused on the police officers serving Gotham City amidst the crime and corruption. This pitch-perfect fic is set after the year-long 52 series when Renee has left Gotham and become the new Question. [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce writes the reunion in Gotham with great affection for these characters, and it's a delight to see the gang back together if only for one moment.

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Han/Leia
Length: ~1,590
Author on LJ: [profile] darth_taral
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

I don't really read that much Original Trilogy-era fic, but when this fic was posted last year for the [community profile] starwarsficfest I decided to give it a try and I very glad that I did. This is one of those stories that can very easily be inserted into canon (in the case of this fic right before the events of The Empire Strikes Back) without any continuity problems. In this fic Wedge finds himself caught in the crossfire when he tries to give Han relationship advice over a few drinks. It's a fun story, that very nicely sets up the tense relationship between Han and Leia in ESB.

“Han…life’s too short. Especially for people who do what we have to do. If you want Leia…really want her, then what’s stopping you? What people think? You’ve never cared about that before.”

“Listen, Wedge…I appreciate…your little pep talk…I really do. But let’s be realistic here. A princess and a guy like me…we’re not compatible! She’s royalty, she’s also practically a figurehead for the Alliance now. She’s…that expensive curio that you see in a shop window. Even if you could afford it, what the heck would you do with it if you got it?”

PSYCH! It premieres tonight on USA at 10/9c. So set your TVs up and while you're waiting, I give you a fairly long fic to keep you busy and entertained. And if you've never watched before, maybe this will convince you to start? :D

Fandom: PSYCH
Pairing: Shawn/Lassiter
Length: long
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] regann
Author Website:
Why this must be read: 17-year-old Shawn has a fake ID burning a hole in his pocket, a college party to crash, and a mission to stop being the only virgin in his senior class. Unfortunately, there's this big-earred, good-doing grad student by the name of Carlton who catches him in the act. The unfair nature of cosmic humor being what it is, thus begins something that'll come back to haunt them both ten years later -- when an adult Shawn Spencer decides to give psychic investigation a try.

An awesome, fantastic story filled with angst and hurt and more frustrated love than you can shake a stick at. The boys are at their best in this, and it's great to see a young Lassiter and how he's changed over the years—in part because of what he had (and lost) with Shawn. Read it! You'll be happy you did!
