But in this fic I love them in their own right. Beautifully written, with details that seem straight from a child's mind, I can't possibly describe the amount of love I have for this story. When she first came out, Caroline had experienced a moment of indecision and refused to breathe for four whole minutes. “Wasn’t sure if we were good enough,” said Daddy, and Caroline liked that idea – her baby-self holding her breath, deciding.
Cass breathed right away, probably because she was already late. Cass always did everything fastfastfast. But it didn’t matter because they were too small anyways; Mummy and Daddy couldn’t take them home. Instead they spent their first month in an incubator, on their backs beside each other like upturned beetles. And maybe they remembered this feeling of helplessness, later, because they never turned anything on its back that couldn’t get up again (this mostly meant bugs in the garden at the old house, but sometimes people too).

While most authors would spend a chapter, tops, with Anakin deciding to either leave the Jedi Order or break off things with Padmé, eryn_skynobi understands how difficult a decision this really is and shows it with her characterizations of Anakin, Padmé, and Obi-Wan throughout the fic. Fandom: DC COMICS Character: Jason Todd Length:1993 Author on LJ: runespoor7 Author Website: Gotham Fic List Why this must be read: Street kid Jason Todd, wise to the world and looking out for his friends, even if they don't think they need it. I love this piece for the unsentimental glimpse of the life Jason might have had before he met Batman, and for the fact that he's portrayed as more than just a mouthy delinquent living on the streets. They ignore the cuss. Jason's got the dirtiest mouth. Sometimes they dare him about that – they pick something, anything, and they listen to him spout chains of swearwords until he runs out breath or patience. Jason doesn't think that much about of it, there's nothing that creative about dropping f-bombs every other word, but it makes them laugh. They're young, much younger than Jason has been since a long, long time, even though he's not the oldest among them.
They're kids, and that means a lot of things, but mostly that means it's also Jason's job to look out for them and help them into looking for themselves.

No, wait, before you run away, he's only wearing half of it for most of the time (well, in this story, anyway.) bistokids has a real feel for the voices of the characters and this is a funny, sweet piece that makes me cackle. Shawn's so canonically bisexual that it invariably falls to the other person to have the freak out. I appreciate that it's Shawn's turn in this one. Papa Spencer is MAGNIFICIENT in this. This is a very interesting Letterboys story set last autumn during the period when the Boys, and (separately) AJ, were doing concerts in the UK. JC, of course, had produced for BSB and co-written a song with AJ, so naturally, he drops by to say hello since he's in the same country. AJ is very tense at the prospect of his solo concerts (and with the after-effects of sleeping badly), so JC offers him a massage. And one thing leads to another, as things are wont to do. Except that it turns out JC has no previous experience in this particular line of action. So there's a bit of freaking... Lots of charming characterisation, and the freaking is entirely reasonable and adult, which I approve of. And the fascination the rest of the Boys have for what is going on is very funny indeed. What I really love is eventual inclusion of Andy in that family, in large part because of how Cassidy sees her mother change. Tonight, Cassidy hears her mother’s voice coming through the wall of her bedroom for the first time in forever. Her mom is talking to someone on the phone. Cassidy has no idea who it is. But there’s something in the way she’s speaking, all slow and calm, that makes Cassidy’s stomach do flips. She isn’t angry, so Cassidy doesn’t think it’s about the magazine. Usually Mom’s conversations about work are really fast. She calls someone, tells them to do something, and hangs up. But now, she’s just chatting. Cassidy watches the clock, starting at 9:57pm. By the time she falls asleep, sometime between 10:28 and 10:29, her mother is still speaking in that slow, calm voice that sends Cassidy into peaceful dreams.Four Corners | | |
