Why This Must Be Read: I like my Sylar/Claire fic dark and angsty, and this certainly fits the bill, but at the same time, there's a great undercurrent of dark humour throughout. In amidst blunt force trauma and kidnapping, you'll find yourself grinning at the banter. I don't usually go for dubcon, because the Sylar-as-a-rapist trope is one I don't find particularly convincing, but it works here because kathrynthegr8 never pulls any punches with her Sylar characterisation: he's as unapologetically violent and self-serving as he is in canon, sociopathic in a way that we don't often see in fic. At no point does she try to redeem or excuse who Sylar is, and that's a really refreshing approach.

Similarly, I love her Luke. He has no conscience, desperate to please Sylar and unfailing loyal to him, while at the same time, having a wonderfully age-appropriate teenage outlook on things. The awkward master/apprentice relationship between Sylar and Luke is spot on, and the growing friendship between Luke and Claire is very believable. If the show went to a darker place, I could definitely see this fic being canon. Filled with dozens of little details, this fic makes you feel as if you're in the car, on that road trip with them. The twist at the end is a sucker punch to the gut; this fic will leave you reeling.

I Am The Highway

The recent Watchmen movie really revived the fandom, so I'll be trying to rec some of the cool new stuff, although I'll also be flinging some of the older jewels of the pre-movie fandom your way too. Hold on to your hats, folks, because this is going to be a dark, dirty, wonderful ride.

Why this must be read:

The author summarizes this fic as "little snippets of childhood" and that's a pretty good description of the piece. We take a peek into the lives of the Watchmen characters during their youth and get surprising insight into who they were before they were heroes and how their worlds have changed since then. Little bits and pieces make us wonder at what might have happened had they not pulled on the spandex, who they might have grown into, where they might have gone.

Excerpt: Above them, a F-86 Sabre screams through the air, sleek and otherworldly, and startlingly at odds with the chunky, muddy-colored Allied fighters of Daniel's childhood. It seems to promise the future; not a peaceful future, perhaps, but an interesting one.

Why this must be read: As Azkadellia rises to power, Ambrose is enlisted by the Queen to begin taking the royal family out of collective memory, and in the process becomes the keeper of all the kingdom's stories. A wonderful look at Ambrose before he became a headcase and the Queen as she slowly loses both her daughters.

Keeper of Names

I can't rec in this fandom without reccing stories from Tarlan. She is an amazing (and luckily very prolific) writer, who has by far written the most Michael Biehn character stories of any writer. And not only about his well-known work, but about some of his hardly-known movies as well. I'll be reccing more of her later on, but for now I want to start with a small story of unrequited love.

Why this must be read:
The movie Megiddo tells a biblical story about the devil, in human form (Stone Alexander, played by Michael York), trying to take over the world. One of those opposing him is the brother of this human incarnation, David Alexander, vice-president and later president of the US.

I'm not a fan of the movie, but I am a fan of Michael Biehn's portrayal of David Alexander, and I'm a fan of this small story, where one of his men (Col. Rick Howard) sees David pray for strength on a hillside, just before he takes off to confront his brother by himself, hoping to stop a full-out war. Tarlan beautifully mixes the thoughts and feelings of this man with the biblical aspects of the movie and makes it into a plea for tolerance and love.

Why this must be read:

Gerard didn't get to start his band until the afterlife.

This is the Black Parade AU, weaving together the MCR canon, the Black Parade music and videos, myth and history in a way that's amazing and breathtaking. The characterisations are fantastic, and the story of how they all met and what they accomplished together is spellbinding. One of the best stories of last year's Bandom Big Bang and one I've re-read several times since then.
