08:00 am The 90 Proof Series by eighth horizon (PG-13)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: none (can be read as Dean/Castiel friendship or pre-slash)
Length: 1800, 2050, 3400 respectively
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eighth_horizon
Author Website: Silver and Salt
Why this must be read: Because in a fandom where the apocalypse is around every corner, sometimes you need a good laugh. No, like a really good deep-in-your-gut, "OMG-that's-hilarious", I-spit-tea-on-my-monitor kind of laugh. These three stories making up The 90 Proof Series will give you that as you watch Dean introduce Castiel to alcohol and Cheetos, to talking trash (which Cas manages in his own particular way), and to bowling. My favourite is probably the second story, "Smite Your Bitch Up," but honestly, all three make me laugh out loud, which doesn't happen that often.

04:42 pm In Deep Water by Heather W. and S.A. (PG)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: None
Length: 73k
Author on LJ: Not known
Author Website: HERE
Why this must be read:

In this fanfic Starsky loses his memory and Hutch is trying his best to protect and help his partner, but Starsky isn’t very easy to deal with and has decided that he doesn’t like Hutch. I think it’s a very cute story and it’s one of the first fanfics I read. I know that GeoCities is going to close down on October 26, 2009, but I wanted to recommend it anyways because there’s still time. ;)

Excerpt: Hutch shrugged and took a swig from his beer.

"You are ... very annoying." Starsky mumbled as he rubbed his temple with his thumb and forefinger.

Hutch shrugged serenely and picked up a magazine off the chair next to his.

"If you won't leave ... I will." Starsky said firmly and headed for the door, stopping only long enough to grab his book of numbers.

Hutch put down his bottle and followed him to the door, not touching him or saying anything.

"What do you want?"

"Nothing, why?"

"Then why won't you leave me alone?"

"Can't. I promised myself I wouldn't ever leave you if you needed me. Whether you know you do or not, doesn't really make a difference."

"Oh, please." Starsky exasperatedly. "Don't give me a line about 'loyalty' ... there is no such thing, I know that much."

07:17 pm What price for a SEAL? by Anne Tolar (NC-17)

Michael Biehn is well-known for playing Navy SEALs. He has done it three times, in The Abyss, in Navy SEALs and in The Rock. He's even been made an honorory SEAL for it and asked to be the narrator at the UDT/SEAL Museum in Florida, because his depiction of SEALs were so very accurate and well done. Michael Biehn has always been very proud of and touched by this recognition.

So of course, a story of one of his SEAL characters just had to be included here. I've gone for the movie Navy SEALs.

Fandom:
MICHAEL BIEHN CHARACTERS - Lt. James Curran from Navy SEALs
Length: posted in four parts, about 43.000 words
Author on LJ: no
Author Website: Anne Tolar's stories can be found on the Phoenix Michael Biehn Archive
Warning: this is a dark story and handles very sensitive matter and memories of rape.

Why this must be read:
Anne Tolar has a very unique way of writing. She uses primarily dialogue and emotions to tell her stories and it works. In this story she depicts the utter desolation of a man who can't get a grasp on why he feels the way he does and why he reacts so strongly to some of the hospital treatment, as he is recovering from his injuries - until his friends help him to remember what had happened to him. As she shows Curran's lost state and how he hurts without fully understanding why you can't help but hurt with him and hope for his recovery, while at the back of it all is that nagging question: 'what really happened in Beirut'? When those memories do come back, they are not for the faint of heart!

The title actually says it all: what is the price brave men must sometimes pay for the good they try to do?

08:08 pm Accidentally, part 3 by Serafina (Teen)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Sam/Gene pre-slash
Length: 1200ish words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] serafina20
Author Website:Piek Ric
Why this must be read: I am going to bend the rules a little bit on this one, I hope Sam will forgive the breach of procedure. This author is known in several other fandoms for her epically long and awesome fic. Unfortunately, her only Life on Mars fic hit a brick wall half-way through, and after a year and a half I have given up hope that it will ever be finished. The good news is that chapter 3 is an interlude in the story, a great Sam and Gene moment of the kind any other writer might pen as a one-shot. Here she gives us a bit of that intense slashiness that the series was full of, from a Sam and Gene who are thrown together, but are not yet in a relationship.

Don't be put off by the Brown Cortina rating in the header, that refers to the series as a whole, not this chapter. If you are the type who can stomach reading an incomplete story, I recomend the entire thing as worth a look. But even the biggest WIP haters should be satisfied by this scene's ability to be enjoyed on its own merits.
