Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Pairing: none Length:3,214 words Author on LJ: winks7985Author Website: winks7985 magnificent 7 tagWhy this must be read:SQUIRRELS! I think everyone who's ever read fic has read kitten!fic, cause hey, kittens, but not many fandoms can say they have a really great squirrel fic. This story starts out light and humorous, then gets a little weird and there's a nice dash of hurt/comfort at the end. Anything more would spoil the plot. Excerpt: Smiling, Ezra asked of his furry friend, “What do you want?”
The squirrel tilted his head, and Ezra swore it cocked an eyebrow at him. Then his little mouth moved, saying, “You know what I want. We’ve been through this already.” The voice was menacing.
“You just talked,” Ezra said, disbelievingly.Of the UnCommon

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: None Length: 50k Author on LJ: Not known Author Website: HEREWhy this must be read:I’m not really sure if I love or hate the episode ”Starsky vs. Hutch”, but I’m absolutely certain that I love to read fanfics related to it (as long as I don’t have to deal with Kira). This is actually a good one, and it takes place before the last scene in the episode. There's a lot of conversation, but hey, that’s the way I like it. ;P Excerpt: "What am I gonna do," he asked himself out loud. He opened his eyes and turned his head back to the bathroom. The noise had stopped.
"Starsk?" he called out.
No answer.
"Starsk?" He sat up.
"Stay out there. I'm all right--asshole," the last word was faint and muffled, but Hutch heard it just the same. It brought a small smile to his lips. If anyone deserved to be called an asshole, it was him. He was the king of the assholes and he knew it.
"You're gonna fix this, that's what you're gonna do," he said to himself as he got up from the couch.
He walked over to the bathroom door and stood, listening. He could hear his partner muttering unintelligible comments to himself. All he could make out was an occasional "Oh, God." Then, finally, he heard, "Maybe I'll just die right here on his bathroom floor. That would teach him."Aftershock

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Tony/Ziva (but only slightly) Length: ~1100 Author on LJ: paperfloweredAuthor Website: http://paperflowered.livejournal.com/ Why this must be read: Ziva can be such a hard character to understand and connect with, I believe, for a viewer because compared to the other characters she leads such an extra-ordinary life and can also seem very cold and unfeeling (this was especially true at the beginning). I never pictured Ziva as one to smoke (and I am not a smoker) but the idea of what smoking represents to her works perfectly in this piece. The writing is superb; the syntax, amazing. The fic has the perfect balance of plot and deep thought. The fic is perfect in length. It leaves you almost wanting more, but okay with it's ending. And the last line is so, so perfect. Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW) Characters: Tom Zarek, Meier, gen Length: 1,500 words Author on LJ: brennanspeaksAuthor's website: hereWhy this must be read: My second favorite character in the entire franchise is Tom Zarek, precisely because he is such a complicated, interesting character. brennanspeaks captures everything I adore about this character (not all of it admirable) perfectly in this quick little fic about the aftermath of the Bastille Day episode. This is a Zarek that isn't so invested in personal power (I never agreed with RDM about that), but has a bright, shining vision of the future and will do anything... anything... to accomplish that vision. And brennanspeaks doesn't hold back on that part, either. She captures the concerned, ruthless visionary that makes me adore this character, and this little fic feels extremely canon to me. I know she's had other fics that she's put far more effort into (and are totally worth reading!), but this one sticks so hard with me I just had to rec it. So This Is Freedom

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Ray Kowalski/Ray Vecchio Length: 4000 words Author on LJ: catwalksalone Author Website: http://www.thecatthatwalkedalone.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Why this must be read: So, I love Ray/Ray. (Which um, I'm sure everyone knows? :D?) And this fic makes me SO. HAPPY. I love it because, while I adore angst and fics that deal with all the weighted history between Ray and Ray, this is so hilariously funny and so them all while being decidedly not angsty and *insanely happy*. THEY TALK ON THE PHONE, OKAY. And it's a wonderful fic because it keeps them so marvelously in character and shows yet another reason why Ray/Ray is love, and why they work so great together. Cat is a great writer and she does amazing humor, and if you don't laugh out loud several times in this fic, then you maybe don't have a soul? I don't know, but I do know that this is one of those "I read this fic in a bad mood and I cheer up instantly and flap my hands crazily at my desk in glee" fics. (IRTFIABMAICUIAFMHCAMDIG fics, you've heard of that acronym, right?) I love fics that get the Rays together with friendship just as much as I love them kissing after a fistfight, and this is one of my faaaaavorites in the friendship-first! category. Also, the list Vecchio makes in a notebook is priceless. ( Excerpt of cuteness! )Let the Sunshine In

Fandom: TIN MAN Pairing: Cain/Glitch Length: ~2140 words Warnings: aphrodisiacs leading to sex Author on LJ: greenspineAuthor Website:Why this must be read: It's sweet, funny, and hot - and best of all, it features the Munchkins Eastern Guild and their entertaining ways, along with cultural misunderstanding and a healthy dose of the "we have to pretend we're married" cliche. I appreciate that it 'widens' the O.Z. a little too, exploring one of the various cultures it contains. ( excerpt )How to Negotiate a Treaty with the Eastern Guild

Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Harry Potter / Severus Snape Length: 34,000+ words Author on LJ: sinick and ac1d6urnAuthor Website: None Why this must be read:Everything has gone wrong: Snape has watched Harry die, Voldemort has been resurrected in a creepy fusion with Nagini, the Death Eaters have taken over Hogwarts. Somehow, Snape must continue on, doing what he can to see that good can eventually triumph. Yet all is not as it initially seems in this delightful story that goes AU at almost the end of Deathly Hallows, and the 'secret animagus' trope is certainly alive, well, and as charming as ever in this entry from the current snarry_games. Sinick and Acidburn, who always bring interesting fic full of delightful images, have done a marvelous job showing how the smallest of creatures can bring hope in dark times, in this case, a Snidget, the small (about the size of a bumblebee) golden bird that was the inspiration for the Snitch in the game of Quidditch (for more about this magical creature, see Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages). The epigraph, Dickinson's "Hope Is the Thing With Feathers," couldn't be more apt. Lovely and sweet! There are also two gorgeous additional illustrations by Acidburn that aren't on the story proper. ( Excerpt behind the cut. )Go! Read! :) The Snidget

Even more than military guys, Michael Biehn has played cops. And that's what he is in Strapped, det. Matthew McRae from a section that deals with illegal firearms. Don't know the movie? Neither did I when I found Stacie's wonderful stories. All I knew was, that McRae had browbeaten a boy into being his snitch and things went wrong for the kid. It was more than enough knowledge, because Stacie's stories aren't about the movie in any way, they are about the hardship of being a cop. Fandom: MICHAEL BIEHN CHARACTERS - Det. Matthew McRae from Strapped Length: two ficlets, one story of about 11.000 words Author on LJ: not, as far as I know Author Website: Stacie's stories can be found on the Phoenix Michael Biehn ArchiveWhy this must be read:
Ever thought being a cop was glamorous? Heroic? Think again. Stacie shows the hardship of living a cop's life, what it can cost a person and how sometimes only bad choices can be made - choices that, when they go wrong, go wrong horribly. She shows the gritty, non-glamorous part of a cop life and it's nothing like it's depicted in the movies. It's hard work for a lousy pay, and often it's very sad work. Reading her three stories, you can't help but feel for this struggling cop who keeps trying to do the right thing despite the odds. I'm Maidenjedi, back for another round of recs in Small Fandoms, and for September 2009 I'm doing Anne of Green Gables. "There's such a lot of different Annes in me. I sometimes think that is why I'm such a troublesome person. If I was just the one Anne it would be ever so much more comfortable, but then it wouldn't be half so interesting." At the start of the twentieth century, a Canadian author named Lucy Maud Montgomery created Anne Shirley, and for young girls everywhere, the world changed. I don't think I'm overstating my case when I make the claim that Anne of Green Gables took what Little Women did and ran further and more successfully. The fandom is small, but the impact that Montgomery's novels had has lasted a century and promises to endure. ( Read more... )
