04:53 am Addams Family/Torchwood (PG-13)
Fandom: ADDAMS FAMILY (MOVIES)/TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Gen; mentions of canon pairings
Length: 5,475 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] basingstoke
Author Website: http://www.ravenswing.com/~bas/
Why this must be read:

This is a truly clever and well thought-out crossover which takes both fandoms and meshes them together beautifully. This isn't crack, even though it might have been. The humor here is a it dark and creepy. I loved the characterization, and the characters interactions, especially between the Torchwood team.

07:58 am The Lamentations of Poor Anne by HDKingsbury (PG)
Fandom: SHAKESPEARE -- RICHARD III
Pairing: Anne Neville/Richard III
Length: 2000 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/795874/HDKingsbury
Why this must be read: Writing fanfiction for Shakespeare's histories is hardly an easy task, considering that the histories are already pretty much fanfiction of recorded history. The good histories fanfic writer has to negotiate compressed timelines, legendary characters mixing with real ones, multiple historical personages conflated into a single character, Shakespeare's own strong opinions regarding past events, and an endless parade of people named Edward. HDKingsbury has not only done this, but she has also taken on one of Shakespeare's greatest villains, King Richard III.

12:05 pm Burn Notice: Fandom Overview
Hello fans! I'm going to provide you a very quick overview of the Burn Notice fandom, so we can get straight to the good stuff. But, I figured there simply is no better introduction than the one in Michael's own words. This voice over plays in the beginning of every episode.

My name is Michael Westen. I used to be a spy. )

05:37 pm The One Who Sees by Othercat and kdorian (FRM)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER/ANGEL
Pairing: Lindsey/Xander
Length: about 160,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] othercat and [livejournal.com profile] kdorian
Author Website: OtherCat1 on fanfiction.net kdorian on fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

Lindsey/Xander is a rare pairing with good reason, as the characters never came close to meeting on either series. In this fic, the authors make this pairing work, and they do it without destroying Lindsey's canon characterization. This is a loooong fic that takes off in an AU direction after You're Welcome, with an entirely different outcome to Lindsey disappearing from Wolfram and Hart. He winds up with Cordelia (and Doyle's) visions, and Xander's team of Slayers just happens to have room for a Seer. The characters and relationships evolve over the course of the fic, never ignoring where they started from in canon.

(Note: If you really object to reading on ff.net, you can also find the fic by using the tags on [livejournal.com profile] othercat's LJ. Trust me, the ff.net version is easier and has fewer typos.)

06:23 pm Rumor Has It by Laura Smith (PG13)
Title: Rumor Has It
Fandom: Burn Notice
Pairing: Michael/Lucy
Author on LJ: Laura Smith ([livejournal.com profile] romanticalgirl)
Author Website: Her LJ
Why this must be read: The series begins with Micheal's Burn Notice. There is a definite dearth of mission fic, but when it's done well, it's amazing. As this fic is. Lucy Chen, one of the people in Micheal's life that he still slightly trusts goes way back. This is a tale of their possible first meeting.

Author's Summary: He's not goddamn McGuyver.

Excerpt: Being a spy is never easy. It’s not like school where they start you out with the basics and let you work your way up from addition to quantum physics. Being a spy is kind of like dropped off in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and being told to swim to shore. Michael’s first assignment is a little easier than that - overthrow a minor African government with a toothpick, a container of Silly Putty and an empty glass bottle.

Okay, the empty glass bottle is actually a rocket launcher and the toothpick is insider information, but he’s not kidding about the Silly Putty. It is, after all, not just for lifting comics off the newspaper page.

08:52 pm Love is a fool star by musesfool (Adult)

Fandom: FIREFLY

Pairing: Mal/Inara, Mal/Jayne, Mal/Kaylee, Mal/Zoe, Mal/River

Length: 2,840 words(10k, 20k, drabble, one-shot, novel-length; any indication of approximate length is great)

Author on LJ: musesfool

Author Website: http://unfitforsociety.net/achromatic/

Why this must be read:

musesfool is one of the most prolific writers in the Firefly fandom. Many times, I feel like I'm right there in the story, which is also the case in 'Love is a fool star'. Each of the five sections are fairly short, but they're very descriptive, and have plenty of details from the series and movie woven in. There's not much else to say, aside from that it's a truly beautiful piece of storytelling.

09:06 pm Dead Soldiers: An Oral History of the End Times by fryadvocate (r)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: none
Length: 43,400 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] girl_wonder
Author Website: LJ memories
Why this must be read:

Dead Soldiers: An Oral History of the End Times is a fantastic story about the apocalypse written in the style of World War Z. It tells the story of the war between heaven and hell - and the key figures of Sam and Dean Winchester - through interviews with the people who were there.

an excerpt )

[livejournal.com profile] girl_wonder deftly weaves together testimony from many characters - some we're familiar with from canon and some who are original to this story - to give us a fascinating portrait of what happened during the apocalypse. Written for this year's SPN Big Bang, this is a fantastic, gripping read, that draws both Sam and Dean vividly, for all that we only ever see them through other people's eyes, and though it doesn't always seem clear to the people in the story, it's easy for us to see how important their relationship is to both of them, and how it factors into the war between heaven and hell.
