Fandom: TORCHWOOD Pairing: Jack/Ianto Length: 6,500 words Author on LJ: dsudisAuthor Website: Words Words WordsWhy this must be read: I love how this story dumps us into the middle of a fight, unravels to reveal a ridiculous misunderstanding, throws in some nicely entwined comedy and action, and just keeps ramping up from there. It also has Jack being, well, rather adorably Jack-ish, which understandably drives Ianto to bitchiness. Mmmmmm. I don't know about you, but bitchy Ianto is one of my favourite things, and dsudis writes him so well. :) Shoot First, Apologize Later

. Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt Length: 3,000 words Author on LJ: constance_bAuthor Website: List of stories posted to lifein1973 Why this must be read:There’s some speculation about Gene’s elusive Missus in the Life on Mars fandom. Gene mentions her a few times in canon but we never meet her and are not even told her first name. Some Sam/Gene ‘shippers ignore her existence, several throw in a line or two about her leaving Gene for one person or another but very few stories deal with the canonical fact of Gene’s marriage head-on. That’s exactly what constance_b does in this story and I think she does a beautiful job of explaining it through slash goggles *without* discrediting/ignoring/undervaluing Gene’s marriage. It’s also, perfectly, Sam & Gene. The story is untitled and was written for martianholiday a couple of years ago although it is not a holiday story. .

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin Length: 98K Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: www.chromeandgunmetal.com Why this must be read: Napoleon has offended Illya and is trying desperately to gain his forgiveness. But Napoleon disappears and Illya is left to look for him and deal with Napoleon's offense. Elise Madrid writes a tight story, capturing the personalities of both men very well. The reactions of each are believable and the ending is just what you'd hope for. Enjoy! Unfit for Vision

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Dawn/Kennedy Length: ~1000 words Author on LJ: doyle_sb4Author Website: Hall of MirrorsWhy this must be read: I was unsure whether to rec this since Dawn and Kennedy are about the most unliked characters in BtVS, but I had to. It's written beautifully and the characterisation is spot on from the main characters down to the bit parts. Best of all, it brings out the geek in me since, like Kennedy, I seriously dig geek chicks. Best of all, I love fics where Dawn is shown as capable and intelligent. Kennedy blamed Willow. Dating rules said that even if it was a good break-up and you’d stayed friends and whatever, you had to blame your ex for everything, and wasn’t her Watcher always saying Kennedy needed to learn about following rules? She said that all the time, right between “there’s no ‘I’ in Slayer” and “ancient mystical samurai swords are not toys, Kennedy. No, not even if Santa left it for you.”
Willow had turned her onto geek chicks, so it was Willow’s fault that she was here a year later, watching Dawn catalogue books and wondering how bad - how good? - a response she’d get if she just threw her onto the library table and licked the nearest accessible piece of skin. Flirting in Code

Fandom: MARVEL COMICS Pairing: Gen Length: 6,400 words Author on LJ: marinarusalkaAuthor Website: Marina's HomepageWhy this must be read: Pepper Potts runs into Christine Everhart at a book signing. It is awkward. They are formal. They find some common ground. They act like a pair of mature, intelligent adults, who have quite a bit in common. How often do you find that in your fiction? Action-adventure genre fiction, moreover. Chloe Liked Olivia

Fandom: Highlander Pairing: none Length: ~5K Author on LJ: none, as far as I know Author Website: Shores of Loch ShielWhy this must be read: Highlander fics that explore the mystical are not rare. SImilarly, fics that explore what it's like for one of the characters after they become Immortal are not rare. What makes this one well worth reading is the mix of mysticism and myth. The author writes incredibly descriptive prose, lighting the story with both an Immortal mysticism and a Celtic one. She also answers just why Ramirez went to find Connor. At the same time, this is not just about Connor, but also Methos and his future. ( snippet )Innocent SmilesNote Bene: this is the first part of a trilogy about Connor MacLeod. The others can be found here: Hollow Bones (PG-13) Nest of Arms (NC-17)
