. Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Sam Tyler/Gene Hunt Length: 1150 words Author on LJ: trollopfopAuthor Website: trollopfic Why this must be read:I’m always fascinated by stories that attempt a background for Gene, a reason for why he is the way he is and in this story Trollopfop does a great job of exploring the events that might shape, and even perhaps eventually damage, a relationship between Gene and Sam, events that have happened before they even meet. It also boasts what may be my favourite opening line ever in a piece of fan fiction, featured in this very short excerpt: There are rules for clandestine buggery. No one ever lists them for you, but you learn them anyway, passed from one copper to another in a silent conspiracy of shame.Rules.

Fandom:HIGHLANDER Pairing: None mentioned Length: 29,338 Author on LJ: not known Author Website: Neoinean's Fanfic ProfileWhy this must be read: Written in a virtual season 6, with the premise that Modern Prometheus was the last episode of season 5, and ignoring the last movie, this fic brings together Connor, Mac, Amanda, Richie, Joe, and Methos for a pre-Christmas get-together. During the course of conversation, Richie wants to know when each of them had their first taste of beer, which then descends into story-telling hour(s). Neoinean balances what each Immortal knows about each other pretty well, beginning with the assumption that Connor wouldn't know who Methos is and that not everyone is privy to the Horsemen reveal. When it comes to Methos' turn, he gives us a story that is bittersweet and yes, Horsemen oriented. What drew me to this is that this is a fic not just about the first time Methos had beer, but also about the Horsemen and why he left the Horsemen - and it's not because of Cassandra. More than that, Neoinean peppers the fic with examples of friendship between those gathered, such as how they all take an interest in Richie's college education. Warning, there is some character OOC'ness at certain parts that might bother you, but the story itself is well put together and a very nice read. It also references an earlier story in her 'verse but it is not necessary to read that to enjoy this. A Bitter Ale, with links to subsequent chapters

My apologies for the delays .. between work and a nor'easter knocking out my power, I'm a little behind on my recs. So hang on, it's gonna get fast and furious for the rest of the month. Enjoy!! Fandom: Naruto Pairing: Kakashi/Iruka, Naruto/Sasuke Length: 21,037 words Author on LJ: I don't think she has one Author Website: @ FF.net Why this must be read: I like stories that give new insight into familiar characters. In Naruto fic, the possibilities are endless. With a cast of hundreds, a good author can keep a reader amazed without OCing. With Kept Secret, Sunlight through Leaves gives you another view of life in the Hidden Leaf village, a wonderful new take on a seemingly simple and sincere school teacher, and and a puzzle even an ex-ANBU sensei finds irresistible. And if you enjoy Kept Secret, Also give Touchstone a try. Sunlight Through Leaves is a definite Iruka fan and it shows in all her writing. She brings him to three-dimensional life so much better than the manga without ignoring all the characteristics that make him great. She's a delight. But definitely try Kept Secret. And don't forget to leave feedback.

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: None Length: 4,200~ Author on LJ: pepper_ckua Author Website: Her gen fiction, Her slash fiction Why this must be read: Because even though she’s written many, many stories in Starsky and Hutch, this is one of her early ones and still my all-time favourite. It’s the rhythm and poetry of it – unique to Pepper - it's the way she draws you in from the very opening paragraph (quoted below), to the moments of ‘the in-between’ that she then illustrates in the lives of Starsky, Hutch, Dobey, and original characters a case brings them into contact with. And all rounded off with a lovely touch of hurt/comfort. There is the time of in-between. In-between when the phone rings and when it is answered. In-between a toddler’s fall to the floor and the inevitable wail. In-between the pull of a trigger and the bullet meeting its target. In-between is the time one is awake and then falls over the edge into sleep, when possibility can make an unexpected turn. In-between the jump from the bridge and contact with the hard surface of water. In-between the time one sees a cop at the door and knowing in a few moments the bottom is going to fall out of your world. The in-between can be only a few seconds. Or a few minutes. Sometimes it can take up an entire lifetime. The In-Between

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Nyssa/Tegan Length: 5100 words Author on LJ: doyle_sb4Author Website: Doyle's fic at A Teaspoon and an Open MindWhy this must be read:Because it's adorable, with absolutely spot on characterisation for everybody that will make you nostalgic for the dysfunctional time-travelling family dynamics of the Fifth Doctor Era. And the Nyssa/Tegan romance is lovely and well developed. This time they really did get to Heathrow.
In 1666.
There were Terileptils.
Nyssa sat on her own bed while Tegan unpacked, and she was trying so hard to look sympathetic instead of pleased that eventually Tegan came over and hugged her and said, “Yes, all right, I'm not completely sorry to be staying.”
Nyssa was soft and pleasant against her.
“But don't say a word to the Doctor.”Show Me More of This Traken Thing Called Kissing
