07:23 am A WORD THAT DOESN’T RHYME WITH ORANGE BY Severinne (PG-13)

Why this must be read:

If you ask Sev she’ll tell you that she writes “escapist smut” but she’s only the writer so what does she know? *g*

What I know to be true is that while she does, indeed, deliver glorious “escapist smut” it’s never just that, it’s always layered with complexities and small deftly crafted moments that you catch out of the corner of your eye and that enable you to read it in a whole other light.

So, I hear you asking, why did I pick one of her rare PG-13 stories? Because I wanted to share something that foregrounds that skill, a bittersweet angst tinged story that touches on some of the problems inherent in two men from such different eras and societal backgrounds actually getting together in the first place within the framework of a storyline that’s deceptively simple.

Blank with confusion, Sam drifted towards the battered settee, scrutinizing the bouquet of orange blooms with the sort of trepidation he typically reserved for letter bombs or the bitter relatives of murder suspects.

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH
Pairing: None
Length: 3,100~

Why this must be read: Because she didn’t write for long in Starsky and Hutch before moving on to House and now Supernatural, but just in like those fandoms, each of her stories is worth reading. She has a gift for nailing characters, for getting under their skins with gentle humour, unpretentious lyricism, and a clench to the heart that is never overdone. Here, Hutch has a bored Starsky on his hands during a stakeout. Starsky has one question on his mind, and Hutch is ducking the answer…

******

“Honestly, Starsk,” Hutch protested. “I don’t know what you’re asking.”

“If we were doomed,” Starsky repeated, as if trying to teach a particularly recalcitrant child. “Would you want to know?”

“You’re asking if I want to know when I’m going to die?”

Starsky frowned. “I don’t like it put it like that. Besides, I’m not talking about you. I’m talking about us. I’ve been thinking a lot about this. When we go out, we gotta go out together.”

This was a new one. It almost felt like a proposal. Not – will you live with me, but will you die with me? Starsky was looking at him so expectantly, but it had been a long time since Hutch had been the first one with all the answers.

“Buddy, the chances of us being doomed on the same day aren’t all that great, no matter what we do for a living. And no. I wouldn’t want to know ahead of time. I prefer thinking I’ve got all the time in the world. Or that we’ve got all the time in the world, if that’s how you want to think of it.”

Starsky’s face darkened, and Hutch knew he’d gotten the answer wrong.

“So, you wouldn’t want to know? Even if it meant everything was the last time?”

Why this must be read:The friendship between Methos and Joe was one of the best things to come out of the show and this fic highlights the fun and humorous side of it. Just a night at the bar after hours, Methos and Joe talk about music and their favorite musicians. Then of course, Methos has to go and break Joe's brain by hinting at aspects of his past and how Mac might react to them. This is a light read with a nice sense of humor that keeps in line with the usual Methos and Joe interactions.
