12:54 pm Scarce Any Man by Atalan (G)
Fandom: LORD PETER WIMSEY
Pairing: Harriet/Philip Boyes
Length: 2,600 words
Author Website: None that I know of
Why this must be read:

This is another "more of" fic, but this time one that shows us what Harriet was up to just after the events of The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club. It's a wonderful take on Sylvia and Eilunedd, on Vaughn, the ghastly Boyes-groupie, and on Phil himself, splendidly self-centred and blind to his own faults. The voice is pure Sayers, and although it's a vignette rather than a story proper, it's so absorbing that one wishes there were more.

Harriet privately thought that possession of a tea tray said less about one's bourgeois leanings than about the impracticality of juggling two mugs, a glass tumbler, and a bottle of not-terribly expensive champagne - but she was rather tired of rows, and lately even stupid things like tea trays had been known to provoke them, so she held her tongue.

Why this must be read: Allison accidentally walks in on Kevin, um . . . during a private moment (if you know what I mean). Unfortunately for Allison, the only men in Kevin's life to talk to him about . . . um . . . his activities are Jack and Nathan, who are less than helpful:

“He told me to get out and close the door! Kevin’s never done that! He’s always been my sweet little boy!”

“You interrupted him! Can you think of anything worse than having your mother walk in, Carter?”

“Actually, I can,” Carter replied. “Try having your house offer to assist.”

Stark nodded slowly. “I see your point.”

I read this fic a while ago and, um, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that it's been on my mind since then.

Re-reading, though, I noticed a lot of funny lines that I missed the first time, like:

that discretion was the better part of survival

and

knew that if Allison saw his grin Henry would be picking up two bodies later that afternoon

I also liked the conversation between Jack and Allison on the porch after Allison has calmed down and can explain her reasons for panicking. I think, by adding this scene, the author prevented Allison from coming across like a hysterical woman, which would've been decidedly OOC.

Why this must be read:

Here's a good, meaty gen adventure to keep you occupied over the weekend! The world-building is excellent, as is the characterisation and the dynamics between the characters. And this is the story for you if you like lots and lots of critters!

06:50 pm Fandom Overview: Glee
Hi, everyone! I'm driving the van for up-and-coming fandom Glee this month, and I thought I'd kick us into gear with a little overview of the fandom. I'm sorry this is late, it's just that this is one fandom that has a lot to cover (Phew...). Now let's get started!

Basically, Glee is amazing. It has me laughing and tearing up every single episode and the musical numbers are catchy as hell. I dare you not to find at least one character you'll fall completely in love with or see yourself in - I love them all. The show is so real, it deals with a lot of the problems we're all faced with and it does so with humor and grace.

Glee first aired its pilot episode in May 2009 and then returned in September the same year with weekly episodes. It’s created by Ryan Murphy (the man behind the hit series Nip/Tuck), Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan as an edgier show about high school – riding on the wave of such phenomenons as High School Musical and American Idol, it's been described by Murphy as a "post-modern musical".

Glee gained immediate popularity among its viewers. It was nominated for three 2009 Teen Choice awards and received the Diversity Award November 2009.

Gleeks: Members of Glee Club and/or fans of the show:)
