Fandom: LIFE ON MARS Pairing: Mild Sam/Gene/Annie (as the author says, ‘the OT3 is more subtext, than text’) Length: Short Author on LJ: irenakAuthor Website: irenak_fictionWhy this must be read: This is a lovely episode tag to S1E6. I love the dynamic between Sam, Gene and Annie in that episode and this both reflects it and takes it a bit further, to a gentle camaraderie founded in shared experience. Annie's POV works beautifully for it: she's sweet, confident, and sharp - and maybe a little drunk. ( Excerpt )What Sort of Day Has It Been?

This will be my last rec for February, and I’m finishing with one of my all-time favourites. I had a great time doing this, I hope you enjoyed the recs! Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT Pairing: Spock/Uhura Length: 26k Author on LJ: yahtzee63Author Website: Yahtzee’s FicWhy this must be read:I don’t think many in the Spock/Uhura corner of fandom are unaware of this story-it’s often dubbed the definitive fic for the pairing, and for good reason. yahtzee63’s characterizations are impeccable, and her attention to detail and additions she makes to what we know about life in the Academy make for a very engaging and believable reading experience. The depiction of the developing relationship and the various obstacles along the way had me at the edge of my seat throughout, even though I already knew how it all ended-you don’t so much read this fic as immerse yourself in it. If you only read one story with this pairing, let it be this one. Break

Fandom: STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: 13k Author on LJ: Unknown. If anyone does know, please tell me and I'll edit! Author website: More of CC's wonderful fics can be found at the Me and Thee Archive. http://meandthee.shahrazad.net/author.php?authorid=18Why this must be read: For my last rec of the month (and it's been fun!), I wanted a hot one, and this is it. It's short, simple, sexy, sweet. Sometimes PWP stands for Perfect Without Plot. The Toybox

Fandom: STARGATE: ATLANTIS Pairing: McKay/Sheppard Length: 17,000 words Author on LJ: crysothemisAuthor Website: Chez CrysothemisWhy this must be read: There is a mystery on Atlantis: Who is Rodney's secret admirer? That's the premise of this delightful confection from Crys. It's hard to write this kind of story well, keeping the plot suspenseful, but making the reader more aware of what's going on than the characters. Luckily for us, Crys is one of those writers who make it look effortless, and you will be surprised and charmed by turns. Funny Little Secret

Fandom: TORCHWOOD/DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Jack/Ianto, Jack/John Length: 36,000 words Author on LJ: nancybrownAuthor Website: None Why this must be read: I'm feeling such delight in being able to finish off this set by reccing one of the best timey-wimey, Ianto-ends-up-in-the-future, Jack-as-a-Time-Agent stories ever. *happysigh* Intersecting Geodesics: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

Fandom: Firefly Pairing: Gen Length: 3200 Author on LJ ana_grrlWhy this must be read: The story gives us glimpses of those leaving Earth-that-was and intersperses it with bite-sized chunks of life in the present aboard Serenity. I love how the author contrasts the two different periods and how she ties the two sets of people together. Passage

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW) Pairing: Kara/Lee, minor Kara/Sam Length: 49,249 Author on LJ: mintenergy Author Website: fanfiction tagWhy this must be read: Signal Fire begins just after the series finale, but all is not as it appears. When Kara vanishes in the field, she awakens in her Viper, on the verge of flying into the storm in Maelstrom. Thus begins a truly epic redemption story. ( Excerpt )Signal Fire

Fandom: CSI Pairing: Nick/Greg, (Greg/Original Character) Length: 4226 words Author on LJ: foggyscribblesAuthor Website: Foggy Scribbles Yahoo GroupWhy This Must Be Read: Angst! Well written angst! Denial and closeted!Nick and the effect that would have on Greg. Greg not being a doormat or a woobie, but a real person struggling with with they want versus what they can have. This fic even manages to have an Original Character who isn't irritating. It's nice--if painful--to see how things play out in this fic, how Greg is essentially struggling through a break up that he can't tell anyone about. Again, painful, but not heavy on the drama or the woe. It's just...someone going through their days, having to work with the person who broke their heart the loss of a best friend and trying to get over that, yet doing so quietly, with real ups and downs and lapses in judgment and maybe, potentially, eventually interest in someone else. Sweet angst if there is such a thing. The Moon Cannot Be Stolen

*The Author didn't actually rate this fic. I'd say it was PG-13, but it was for Rounds of Kink, so I bumped it to R just in case* Fandom: CSI Pairing: Nick/Greg Length: short Author on LJ: lovetheboysAuthor Website: FiclistWhy This Must Be Read: Okay, I didn't want my last rec of the month to be a sad one, so here's a quick bit of Nick and Greg comi...er...getting together. Written for Rounds Of Kink, with the prompt, "Nick just wants to somehow undo the knots in his neck". Nick is stressed out. His oh so nice coworker Greg offers to help. The author has mentioned wanting to do a sequel to this, let's see if we can make that happen with lots of comments. :) (Bye! It's been awesome! Hope you all enjoyed the recs!) Excerpt: "Still got that tension," Greg said rhetorically from behind him, opening his own locker.
"Yeah," Nick acknowledged. It would've grated if Greg had sounded sympathetic. Instead, he sounded matter-of-fact, as if he were commenting on the weather.
"I could help out with that," Greg offered.
Nick's head shot up, and then he winced, sitting on the bench behind him as his neck protested the quick movement. Before he could think about responding, he felt fingers on his neck and a warm palm through his shirt. Tension Relief

I don't usually make recs on weekends, but since this is February I'm short one for my dozen otherwise. Thanks for coming along for the ride! Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Ray Kowalski/Ray Vecchio Length: short story Author on LJ: sionnainAuthor Website: sionnain_ficsWhy this must be read: Because sometimes the most perfect relationships are a patchwork of complementary imperfections. Because the character voices are unique and unmistakable. Because the best kind of character studies are funny and touching and show something previously undiscussed about a character, and this story does that for both Rays. Excerpt: ( Ray kind of hates calling... )gotta hit the gas, baby.

Fandom: MERLIN BBC Pairing: Arthur/Merlin Length: 11,114 words Author on LJ: takadainmate Author Website: Shiny AkabekoWhy this must be read: This is a wonderful and unique take on the "Arthur Finds Out" trope. "This was lying on your bed. Open. With your writing in the margins." He shook his head. "There really is no mistaking that scrawl." He leant forward and flipped the book open to a page on water spells, running his finger down the page to stop at Merlin's hastily written, smudged notation. "The book lies," he read aloud. "Not for moving water but instead removes it completely. Good for drying clothes in winter."
He flipped to another page and Merlin couldn't tell if it was random or not. "Under a spell entitled "To Kill All Creatures"," he said slowly, quietly, rage in his eyes and his shoulders set. "You write, Efficient." The History of Two Conversations (On Paper)

Fandom: DC UNIVERSE: BATMAN NOLANVERSE Pairing: Jim/Bruce Length: 18,000 Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]Author Website: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]Why this must be read:After the events of The Dark Knight and the Joker's rampage on Gotham City, Bruce's trust in people has been pushed to the limit. He therefore takes it upon himself to test Jim Gordon in order find out once and for all if he truly can be counted as an ally to Batman, much to the chagrin of Alfred. As anyone can probably predict nothing really goes according to plan. ( Excerpt )Reliance

Fandom: Man From Uncle Pairing: Napoleon/Illya and Illya/omc Word Count: roughly 46,000 Author on LJ: utopiantrunksAuthor Website: East of SanityWhy this must be read: Napoleon is temporarily out of commission so Illya must work with agent Wstcott. While Illya finds him attractive, Napoleon finds him anything but. And as Illya worries about his mission - could a Thrush agent really take a vacation? - Napoleon worries about getting out of the hospital and getting to Illya. Westcott isn't helping either by making suggestive comments as to what he and Illya have been up to in the hotel. And then Illya issues a distress call... I think the writing in this is just beautiful. Lovely and almost poetic with little bits of humor interspersed. ( read an excerpt )The Triangle Affair

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gen Length: 7000 words. Author on LJ: water_soterAuthor Website: Water-SoterWhy this must be read: This is a delightful fic that explores the changes in the team dynamics over time. It is centred around Tony but all the team are featured. It has a perfect mix of humour and angst and is a very enjoyable read if you're looking for something on the short side. Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gen Length: 96,000 words. Author on LJ: n/a Author Website: secretchild Why this must be read: Ok, so a main character getting cancer can become a bit cliche, especially if poorly written. On the other hand it can be a fantastic base to explore emotions and relationships. This fic falls into the second category. It takes us on a journey with Tony, starting as he discovers he has cancer and then along the long road to recovery. The Tony/Gibbs father/son relationship is featured throught out and Abby and Ducky are also featured prominently. The medical and emotional aspects to having a serious illness are dealt with realistically and with respect. Fine is a Four Letter Word

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gen Length: 40,000 words Author on LJ: iantaliaAuthor Website: IantaliaWhy this must be read:For some reason I was hesident about reading this but I am so glad that something made me give it a try as it became one of the best NCIS fics I had read in a long time. An episode tag to Missing, it gets dark and angsty as Tony deals with emotions that those events let rise to the surface, including trust issues with Gibbs. While not everything is resolved perfectly, we are still left with a sense of hope at the end. There Loomed An Ogre

Vidder: BrightEyes05 Musical artist: Bad English Pairing:Gen Vidder on LJ: Unknown Vidder's website:YouTube ProfileWhy this vid kicks ass: As I didn't get the chance to get to a computer on Friday, my last rec for the month is a video rec. My reasons for loving this vid are all very shallow. I love Tony DiNozzo/Michael Weatherly and one of the things I love the most about him is his smile. This features that gorgeous smile of his. Every time I watch this I am left with a big grin on my face and immediately feel ten times happier. When I See You Smile

Fandom: HOUSE Pairing: Taub/Rachel Length: 1,815 words Author on lj: rubyjuly Why this must be read: This takes place during House's time at Mayfield, and his overwhelming absence becomes a presence of its own, shown here looming huge and silent above the life of Taub. There aren't many stories out there that explore canon from this character's viewpoint, which is a shame because he's so interesting -- a precariously balanced person, familiar with failure and sadness, hopeful and guarded, and all those things come through so poignantly here. More than that, the damage and fragility of other characters comes into sharp focus through Taub's subtly-cracked lens. Follow You Around the Sun
