12:23 am Freedom by Settiai (Teen)

Hey, I'm slashmarks and I'll be driving the Firefly van this month. I'm going to be reccing more than a few femslash fics, but I'm starting out with something more traditional.

Fandom:
FIREFLY
Pairing: Kaylee/Bester, Kaylee/OCs
Length: 1k
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] settiai
Author Website: http://www.settiai.com/
Why this must be read:

It took some time to decide which of Settiai's fics to rec, but this is one of my favorites. Kaylee's transformation from a farm girl to Serenity's mechanic is pulled off wonderfully, as is her life beforehand. The attitude towards sex also strikes me as perfectly Kaylee's.

01:20 am Lonely Nightmare by Justin Glasser (R)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully UST
Length: 119K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] synchronik
Author Website: The Works of Justin Glasser, or his Author's Page at Gossamer, for TXF, and Joe's Eats and Christian Bookshop for his other fandoms.
Why this must be read: I'd never been completely happy with any of the post-episode stories I had read for "Never Again" until I found this one. "Lonely Nightmare" is a casefile/x-file that finds Mulder doing some soul-searching about his feelings for his partner while they're investigating the mysterious disappearances of ten teenagers from a tiny township in Wisconsin. It's a cold snowy winter, the x-file is both puzzling and frightening; Mulder's emotional state is chaotic, his days filled with frustration and regret, his dreams with sexual longing and dark prophecy.

I like reading the plain text copy at Gossamer, but you can also read it at his website.

01:42 pm A Beautiful Fable by agentotter (PG)
Fandom: WILBY WONDERFUL
Characters: Emily Anderson, Sandra Anderson, Duck MacDonald
Length: 3300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] agentotter
Author Website: :faded: Fiction
Why this must be read: The relationship between Sandra and her daughter Emily is one of my favorite parts of the movie, and I love this fic about them so much. It's about Emily's first impressions on moving to Wilby, and we see Sandra's complicated relationship to Wilby through Emily's eyes. Duck is also in the story, and Emily is all "oh-no-it's-all-going-to-go-wrong-again" about him and Sandra. I love knowing that that part, at least, is not going to go wrong. Also, there's a story about a pelican that I totally love.

This story is also available as a lovely podfic read by [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl. If you're noticing that a lot of the stories I rec are recorded as podfics, that's because I often discover stories that way.

10:38 pm It Might Have Been by akisawana (Unrated; probably R)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: 63!Rorschach/Dan, Bill/Byron
Length: ~2000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] akisawana
Author Website: Author's fic on LJ
Why this must be read: Watchmen is a pretty fertile fandom for Rule 63!fic, and this is just stunning. It takes the '...things that never happened' format, and gives us a few vivid, sometimes-hopeful, often-painful glimpses of how Rorschach's life might have turned out had he been born female. The stark, simple style in which it's written suits the subject matter perfectly, and the fic itself made me feel for a character to whom I'm usually indifferent. Which is always a good thing.

11:32 pm Destination, by Spuffyduds (R)
Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO
Pairing: Billy/Joe
Length: 800 words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Author Website: at AO3
Why this must be read: Spuffy is one of my favorite authors in this fandom, and it's no surprise why. This little gem is so true to Joe's personality that it hurts in the most painful way, like a knife to the eye.

It's a post-movie story; Joe's gone and Billy's trying to find his footing in a world that he can't connect with anymore. Until Joe shows back up, smirking and laughing and so real, and Billy finds something worth living for again. Sorta.

Mind the warnings on this one.
