01:06 am Five Things Gene Misses About Sam by Sytaxia (PG-13)

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Gen with implications of  Sam/Gene
Length: 6500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sytaxia
Author Website: a list of the author's fic can be found at: here
Why this must be read:

Although written as an interlude to the authors ongoing work in progress, the story can be read as a stand-alone piece, examining the many ways Gene is dependent upon Sam at a moment when Sam is critically injured.

The beauty of this piece is how the author manipulates key scenes from the show by depicting them through Gene's eyes, using the character's thoughts, fears and reflections to give them a much deeper meaning.

Also, for the record, this author writes one of the best Gene Hunt "voices" out there.

01:42 am Nothing But Distance and Skyline, by BrynnMcK (R)
Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO
Pairing: Billy/Joe
Length: around 2,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck
Author Website: web site
Why this must be read: because sometimes there is a point in which the universe holds it breathe, caught at a crossroad. The moment is full of potential - the potential to continue downward into a painful, bloody trainwreck strewn with body parts or to turn left and forge a new path into the light.

This is Billy and Joe, though. It can't end well, no matter how much we'd like things to be different. Brynn shows us their choices, and drags us along to watch as Billy and Joe teeter on that knife's edge...

02:08 am Partners, by Patricia Foley (PG-13)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Gen - Illya Kuryakin and Napoleon Solo
Length: Novelette
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: More fic can be found at the File 40 website under Gen. http://www.file40.net/
Why this must be read: With Man from Uncle, I am normally very much a slash fan, as I think that the love and intensity of the partnership between Illya and Napoleon is best expressed in that genre. And then I stumbled across this fic - and was enthralled. This gen story tells of how Napoleon, having taken over from Waverley at his retirement, fights tooth and nail against the Soviet state to try and keep Illya by his side, while dealing with the changes that his promotion inevitably has on their partnership.

06:11 am Gloria (you don't have to answer) by china_shop (NC-17)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Ray Vecchio/Ray Kowalski
Length: 5,100 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] china_shop
Author Website: fic_by_china_shop on deliciou
Why this must be read:
Realistic, in-character handling of Vecchio's cross-dressing ways, without the story being just about the fetish; there's a relationship, and it shows. Vecchio's nerves over revealing this kink were believable. And I liked that Kowalski had to have a bit of time to think before he knew what to say. Note: This is part of the gloriaverse.

07:41 am Ain't Nobody Listenin', by Belmanoir (R)
Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO
Pairing: Billy/Joe implied
Length: 1,230 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] belmanoir
Author Website: web site
Why this must be read: because sometimes you just have to do what the dream zombies tell you to do. Plus, the idea of Joe giving tax advice is hysterically funny. This disturbing and blackly humorous story is a loose sequel to New Suit, Cufflinks, and a New Tie but stands on its own.

10:03 am Double-double by Pearl-o (Rating)
This is my last rec, and I hope you've enjoyed the Wilby Wonderful recs! If you're hankering for more, [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo keeps a complete index of all Wilby Wonderful stories. And I'll be back next month, reccing due South.

Fandom: WILBY WONDERFUL
Characters: Duck MacDonald, Emily Anderson
Length: 416 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pearl_o
Author Website: Pearl-o at the Archive of Our Own
Why this must be read: This is a sweet little snippet about Duck coming into the diner, and Emily being all awkward about it because of how he helped her with Taylor. Duck is awkward, too, but for quite a different reason.

Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO
Pairing: none
Length: 299 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] spuffyduds
Author Website: at AO3
Why this must be read: because Spuffy can take the premise of zombies, add them to the Hard Core Logo universe, give everything a brisk shake and produce this - a simply amazing story of terror and blood, fear and ZOMBIES, all under 300 words.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Doctor/Rose
Length: 71,531
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Why this must be read:

Diamond Sea was published in the early post-Doomsday days of reunion and alt!Doctor fics, but this story quickly stood out from the crowd and stands as one of my favorites in the genre. When this story opens Rose has not really adapted all that well to being trapped in an alternate universe, going through the motions of living but always on the lookout for blue police boxes. And, she suddenly gets her wish when she runs into an eighth Doctor, that still hasn't gone through the horrors of the Time War yet. Bad Wolf, Gallifrey, and numerous time paradoxes later and we have a story that is very unpredictable in it's twists and turns, one that everyone should read.

06:57 pm Heavy With Ghosts by Molo (slash)
Fandom: STARSY AND HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] morganlogan
Author Website:http://morganlogan.com/

Why this must be read:
Molo wrote this so you know it is good. Missing scenes from Las Vegas Strangler and Gillian. This is about Hutch and the ghosts that keep haunting him from his past. Starsky is his constant "present" and it is the love he has for Starsky(and the love Starsky has for him) that gets him through his haunting past.

Of course, I'd never told Starsky about him, so how could he know? I've never been able to talk about Jack to anyone. He's existed in my mind in that lit corner of youth and that one golden summer when I was truly happy for the first time, just finally old enough to be free from my parents' control. And Jack knew so many things. He was older, and somehow wiser, and so beautiful. Perfect, really.

08:10 pm Echoes, by Llassah (PG13)
Fandom: HARD CORE LOGO
Characters: Billie, Joe
Length: 1,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] llassah
Author Website: fic tag
Why this must be read: because pretty much anything that [livejournal.com profile] llassah writes is awesome. She has a way with words that transcends storytelling and moves into the realm of art.

Here she writes of Billie, daughter of Mary-the-Fan. Billie, who is often suspected of being Billy's offspring, or possibily even Joe's. Billie, who grows up haunted.

Sorry I disappeared; real life has been kicking my ass for the last few weeks, but I've got a few last-minute recs to share that'll be posted over the next few days.

Fandom: Firefly
Pairing: one-sided River/Simon
Length: almost 5k
Author on LJ: recrudescence
Author website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/recrudescence
Why this must be read: I'm not usually one for River/Simon, but this fic is incredible. It's a beautiful description of what happened at the Academy that manages to capture River's insanity perfectly, and remain interesting despite most of the characters in the fic being OCs.

11:14 pm No Regrets by frolicndetour (PG)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (NEW)

Characters: Kara & various (Dee, Helo et al.)

Length: one-shot

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] frolicndetour

Author's Website: n/a

Why this must be read:

For such a compelling and widely popular character as Kara Thrace, there are surprisingly few gen fics featuring Starbuck. However, this vignette certainly does its bit to make up for this sad lack. Starting with an explanation for the street-urchin pixie-cut hair-do Katee Sackhoff was sporting in the mini-series, the story takes a fun prompt and turns it into a poignant contrast between the hopeful, forward-looking crew of Galactica at the very beginning of the show and the hunted remnants of humanity for whom the ship is both a refuge and a prison. And yet, the bonds of friendship are hinted at in every situation -- not only in Helo's well-established easy-going BFF relationship with Kara, but also in the glimpse of relaxed cameraderie between Kara and Dee, two women which were mostly shown as romantic rivals in canon. Lovely in every way!
