Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Gwen/Morgana (background Merlin/Arthur) Length: 16k Author on LJ: gnimaerdAuthor Website: Fic TagWhy this must be read:This fic is a rare beast; it's a modern AU all about the girls and their spectacularly messy, complicated and sexy relationship. Better yet, it doesn't fall into the trap of assuming all sex between two women is soft and fluffy. They spent hours on the phone to each other; they spent their Sundays in bed listening to radio 4 and talking about silly, strange things like what would happen if somebody discovered how to turn invisible or the perfect consistency of pancakes. The working week passed in a grey, dull, meaningless blur compared to the lightness of the days they got to spend together.
Morgana mapped, with great diligence, every mark on Gwen’s body. She knew every freckle and mole, every scar and spot. She loved every one of them; she loved the familiarity of Gwen’s body – the safety and comfort of it. She’d never been with anyone for longer than a few weeks before. She’d never felt this unguarded with a girl. She loved that Gwen could make her laugh and take her breath away in the same moment. Her modesty was charming, her self-consciousness endearing, her intelligence admirable.
And it took Morgana nine months, give or take, to get bored.

Fandom: HOUSE Pairing: House/Wilson Length: 17k Author on LJ: dominus_trinus Author Website: here Why this must be read: A filk masterpiece modeled after BtVS's "Once More, With Feeling" (or for the Discworld nerds, "Vunce more, vith feelink!") This was the first filk I've ever read, and I have to say that none of the others I've plundered have quite managed to live up to its brilliance. With a wave of the cheerily sadistic DEM's (Deus ex Machina) hand, everyone in Princeton Plainsboro is forced to sing along to 17 fully reworked songs as they go about their business, whether they like it or not. House, of course, is extremely unamused, Wilson dances along (or at least tries to), Cuddy directs everything with a rather bemused air, and the Ducklings 1.0 turn cartwheels as they diagnose. Songs reveal what mere words can't say, though: when House's undertones of pain and distrust sound, there's always Wilson by his shoulder to back him up, and eventually, the melody turns. here @ pit

Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: none Length: 20K Author on LJ: cofax7Author Website: Alchemy, Mouldiwarps, and CoprophagyWhy this must be read: Though season five contains some of the grimmest of the continuing story arcs, of which Christmas Carol/Emily is certainly the saddest, some of the best fanfiction the fandom ever produced was inspired by them. "The Mill" is a very dark take on the possible consequences of the events of those episodes. Cofax's writing is both technically brilliant and emotionally devastating. Fandom: BAND OF BROTHERS Pairing: Gen; Ensemble Length: 800 Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]Author Website: The ArchiveWhy this must be read:Because Band of Brothers has approximately 2.3 women in the entire miniseries and yet this author somehow manages to bring these very minor background characters together and create this wonderful piece about the various women who knew the men of Easy Company. When they came for her, she held her head high. They Also Serve Who Only Stand And Wait

Fandom: THE SENTINEL Pairing: Jim/Blair Length: 16,700 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Author's listing on My Mongoose Ezines Why this must be read: Scribe's stories are some of my favorites when it comes to the use of historical settings in this fandom. And Lime-Vanilla is a step above the rest. The way the story is written, I don't feel like I'm reading a history lesson or textbook. She interweaves her historical details very subtly like her gentle description of an early twentieth century ice cream shop or the use of historical current events throughout the narrative. And all the while, the story's main focus is on the relationship developing between these two men. I also really like the gentle way in which this story is told. When the story is in the past, it's almost dream-like in some passages. And for a fic that deals with past lives and whatnot, that is very fitting. And her use of that past lives story device! Very touching and yet it made me tear up something fierce. Thankfully, it ends happily. So definitely give this story a shot. It's a very well written jaunt through a past life of Jim and Blair's that will leave you breathless and your heart filled with emotion. A prime example of Scribe's writing.

Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairing: Gen with Methos & Darius Length: 2,742 Author on LJ: deralteAuthor Website: FFN profile; Ariana's websiteWhy this must be read: This nice little one shot, while a sequel to an earlier fic, can be read on its own. deralte writes a lovely little friendship piece between Methos and Darius during Napoleonic France and after they had not seen each other for some time. A discussion about life, philosophy, religion and Death - all with little to no angst - as the two Immortals reconnect whilst playing chess. This fic provides a glimpse at a comfortable friendship that many fans like to imagine Darius and Methos had with each other. ( snippet )Les Temps can be read here.
