Hey there! I'm Trovia and I'm going to rec some BSG fic for you in this time of summer heat (at least where I am) when you undoubtedly have nothing better to do than sit in front of a computer. I'm a fan of Gaeta as well as unusual character combinations and minor characters, so that's what you're about to get. Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: none (Romo Lampkin, Felix Gaeta, Tom Zarek, Bill Adama, Lee Adama) Length: ~ 8000 words Author on LJ: brennanspeaksAuthor Website: fic listWhy this must be read: There are two things we don't have enough of in this fandom. One of them is gen, and one of them is ensemble fic written by people who actually like all the characters that appear in the story. "The Gift of Hermes" delivers on both accounts, which makes it pretty special to start with. It's the story of how Gaeta had a trial after the mutiny, with Romo Lampkin cast as his lawyer. It's also a very well-drafted courtroom drama, reminiscent of Baltar's trial only insofar that both Gaeta and Baltar are unlikely to win. Contrary to the show, this one makes sense. It also delivers some excellent characterizations, even of the supportive characters. I especially remember Admiral Adama and his complex relationship with Gaeta. You'll know more about the characters after having read this one. That's rare, in my book, and pretty cool. ( snippet )The Gift of Hermes

Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Length: ten short stories, each one approx. 500 to 1,000 words Author on LJ: lauramcewan Author Website: http://www.hawksong.com/~lauramcewan/home.php Why this must be read: I love a good romance. I appreciate a writer who can give me romance without giving me cavities at the same time. Laura did a beautiful job with this series showing me how much Starsky needs to be with Hutch "out" in the real world, and how Hutch needs time to realign his own world to include a public life with Starsky as his lover. Please note there is one part written by a guest writer, Amy. The stories are best read in order. I've posted the link to the series main page. Each section has a convenient "next" button at the bottom. Small excerpt: Obviously he'd imbibed too much. Dancing, he remembered dancing...and Hutch, with some slight brunette - Samantha? No, that was whom Starsky had whirled onto the floor to extenuate the farce he and Hutch put on for the world, with a bit of jealousy tossed in.
He rolled over into her pillow and abruptly decided the scent was too strong - and not Hutch. He tossed the pillow to the floor, lay back again with his arm thrown across his eyes, and heard his front door open. Changing of the Tides

Fandom: SWORDSPOINT Pairing: Alec/Richard (implied), Marie Length: Oneshot (785 words) Author on LJ: heartofoshunAuthor Website: Silmarillion Writers GuildWhy this must be read: Hi there, y'all--I'll be reccing for Swordspoint this month. Swordspoint and Ellen Kushner's related novels are a fandom very near and dear to my heart (the fact that there was an lj fan following for them was what drove me to get a livejournal to begin with) and I'm hoping to do it justice this month by showing off the range this relatively pretty tiny fandom is capable of. With that in mind, I'd like to start off with something short and fun. There is a fair amount of angst regarding this general area of time in the canon, between Swordspoint and Privilege Of The Sword, in which time Alec inherits the dukedom, causing a rift between Alec and Richard and contributing to the fact that when we see Alec again in Privilege, he is a very unhappy man. This piece does hint at that, but for all that it's a step in the progression, the Alec we see is still the young man we remember from the first book. ( Excerpt )Home Improvement

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Characters: Martha Jones, the Second Doctor, Sally Sparrow Length: 4500 words Author on LJ: cesario Author Website: fic tag, Why this must be read:Martha is Awesome, but even awesome people need a break sometimes when the weight of the world is in their hands. In the epic three-parter Utopia, Last of the Time Lords, and The Sound of Drums, Martha Jones walked a post-apocalyptic Earth for a year and sowed the seeds of the Master's downfall. Although the plan and the final act were the Doctor's, he would have been quite literally powerless without her strength, her courage, her wiliness, her determination, and her persuasiveness. The episode, and most of the stories written about it, focus on what the Doctor endured as the Master's prisoner during that hellish year, or what Jack Harkness suffered. Martha is praised but given little screen time. I love this fic because it's about Martha, about the changes the year that never was made in her, about how she learned and grew. I also love this fic because she gets to meet one of the Doctor's previous incarnations, and learn a little more about him, while still having a logical reason for why he doesn't know her when they first meet. I love the hope she's given at the end. A Moment's Grace

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Spike/Drusilla Length: 1,990 Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]Author Website: MemoriesWhy this must be read:Because it's Spike and Drusilla, and they're passionate and crazy, and so very in love. The images of this piece are so vivid, with the clothes, the people, the music; the entire atmosphere just invokes the 1920s. It's the perfect mix of romance and horror, with this couple I wouldn't expect anything less. He cherished her imperfections, of body, as well as mind. They were the things that made her unique and real and touchable and his.O, Little Breath of Oblivion
