12:01 am What It Is and What It Is Not by mandysbitch (NC-17)
Fandom: HEROES
Pairing: Nathan Petrelli/Peter Petrelli
Length: ~23,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read:

This story starts with Peter in college and ends shortly before the first episode. It's long, satisfying and frequently hot (that's what she said), while never shying away from the unfortunate truth: with all the love and devotion and inappropriate touching between them, Peter and Nathan are exceptionally bad for each other. It about sums up the appeal of the pairing for us and will be our last rec this month. Thank you for reading, and if you liked a fic, don't forget to tell the author! -A.

"I wish I'd been around more," Nathan says. "When we were kids."

"I would have liked that," Peter says. When Peter was growing up, Nathan was an enigmatic stranger who made messiah-like appearances at Thanksgiving, Christmas and summer vacations at Cape Cod. Peter has vague memories of throwing his arms around Nathan's leg and begging him not to leave.

"Must have been lonely," Nathan says.

Peter shrugs. "I had Grace," he says. "And Leah, and Darlene, and Shandra, and Ilsa." Peter had nannies whose names he can't remember. His mother didn't want him to become attached to one nanny in case she left and broke his heart. As it turned out, he became attached to all of them, and they all left.

06:53 am VID REC: Starsky & Hutch - World Outside
Thanks to the mods for allowing me this chance to rec in Starsky & Hutch. It was my first (and hopefully not last!) time and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Vidder: Ancasta
Musical artist: The Devlins
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch

Why this vid kicks ass:

An is such a fabulous vidder in several fandoms. I really like the emotional punch of this vid, plus the song rocks. Her cuts are dead on and bring the lyrics to life.

NOTE: There is another journal (ancasta minus the R) that isn't the same person that I've rec'd here. Be sure to visit the correct LJ posted above to enjoy all the goodies from this talented gal.

12:55 pm VID REC: The Magnificent Seven - Believe in You
Vidder: ShannonGeorgia
Musical artist: Amanda Marshall
Pairing: none, all seven gen
Vidder on LJ: unknown
Vidder's website: Shannon Georgia's youtube page
Why this vid kicks ass:

This vid made me fall in love with the Magnificent Seven, it truly encompasses everything the series is about- seven men from all walks of life who had been loners, just trying to get by, but by coming together they each found a part of themselves and people not only to believe in but who would believe in them.

01:08 pm "Casual Acquaintance" Series by Tessa Rae (Adult)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Methos/Duncan
Length: 23,341 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tes_fic
Author Website: stories posted at Highlander Fiction

"Casual Acquaintance" is a series of stories set in the future that follows the friendship of Duncan MacLeod and Methos as it evolves slowly on the immortal timescale. Tessa's characterizations are wonderful, showing the strengths and weaknesses of the Highlander and the oldest immortal -- their human core as well as their sharp edges -- and exploring what it means to live for centuries.

02:06 pm VID REC: Doctor Who - Movin' Right Along
Vidder:  [livejournal.com profile] odessie
Musical artist: Muppets
Pairing: No pairing, but starring every Doctor and companions from every era.
Why this vid kicks ass:

The Doctor never quite seems to end up where he's aiming for... and this is the perfect song to show it.

I had a really hard time deciding which vid to rec this month, because Doctor Who has a lot of good vids, and especially in the last few months there have been several really good ones posted.  Finally, I decided to go with this vid, which is a bit older but very well done, and do a rec post on my own journal for all the rest.  This month I've tried to spread the love and rec something from as many Doctors and companions as possible, so I thought it would be appropriate to rec a vid that spans all of Doctor Who (except what hadn't been done yet when it was made).  One of the constants in the Doctor's long life is his poor navigation skills--he very rarely ends up both where and when he wants to be, and this is a cause of much confusion, humor, and adventure on the show.  Well, the muppets know all about it, and here they are to sing about it.  The clips are well chosen and well-synched to music, the overall quality is high, and it's fun to watch.

02:56 pm VID REC: Man from UNCLE - The Blackest Velvet Affair
Vidder: Spiritedshadow
Musical artist: Alannah Myles
Pairing: quoting the vidder: ? Don't get too close ladies. But one can get slash from anything.
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] charismaz
Vidder's website: Spiritedshadow's youtube Channel
Why this vid kicks ass:

Sometimes, all you want from a vid is eye candy, and...more eye candy. I'm going to quote a youtube commenter on "The Blackest Velvet Affair": The stamp lick AND the wet shirt in the same vid?! *wanders off to lie down in a darkened room*. And another one: Uh, uh, uh, oh, oh, my . . . .*fans self*. Yeah, that pretty much goes for me too. And for those of you who must have subtext, in the words of the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] bluemeanybeany: Interesting ideas linking the proto-squee of elvis to the proto-squee of illya and napoleon.

Heh. All recs should be this easy to write. Enjoy the heat:)

03:21 pm Dead Letter Box, by falafel-musings (PG-13)
Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: none (Ellen, Cavil, Gaeta and Tyrol)
Length: 3000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] falafel_musings
Author Website: BSG fic list
Why this must be read: This is one of the first stories I read in this fandom. Ever since then, I've saved it away in my head with the lable of, "That one Ellen fic with the awesome first line." The first line is as follows:

Ellen kept her eyes closed while she took it.

Isn't it a thing of beauty? It delivers a punch and the tone of the story all at once. Also, the main character.

On top of the excellent first line, this is also that kind of fic about Ellen the heroine that I claim people are thinking of when they say there isn't enough Ellen fic around. And in case that isn't enough, it also answers the burning question of, how was the dead letter box established when nobody seems to know later? If all that isn't enough of a reason to read a fic, I don't know what is.

That concludes my recs for this month! Hope you all had fun.

10:48 pm Confusion Is Putting It Nicely By Feilyn (G/PG)
Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura
Length: 4,531 Words
Author on LJ: Feilyn
Author Website: Feilyn@FF.net
Why this must be read:

Feilyn writes some delightful fic in many fandoms - her Bleach stories will leave you wanting more - but it's Confusion Is Putting It Nicely that always leaves a smile on my face. Short but packing a punch, it's a quick view of life -After Vengeance- and just goes to prove, Sakuke may be incredibly powerful but he isn't the 'swiftest boat in the pond'. lol

And while you're there, try some of her other works as well. Bet you'll find a new favorite.

11:32 pm VID REC: Naruto - Real Ninjas
Vidder: sorzahro
Musical artist: Ann Harada & Jordan Gelber
Pairing: Uhhmmm, I can't answer this
Vidder on LJ: Unknown
Vidder's website: Sorzahno on Youtube
Why this vid kicks ass:

My first Fanvid rec comes courtesy of my 16-year old niece who said,"You don't Youtube?" So I now I know what AMVs are and where to get a good laugh when I am down. Real Ninjas is Naruto, if Monty Python did it. Enjoy!!!

A wonderful fanvid on the nature of slayer-hood. Powerful, epic, this is a video that left a lump in my throat after the last notes were played and is one that you all need to see.

Vidder: theanonsisters
Musical artist: Gabrielle
Pairing: Sam/Gene
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brokencaps
Vidder's website: N/A
Why this vid kicks ass: It is perfect. Okay, so I may or may not have requested this (I totally did), but [livejournal.com profile] theanonsisters blew me far and away with the brilliance of it. I originally envisioned something more tongue-in-cheek and ironic, but instead got a vid that played it straight completely convincingly. I love the editing, I love the lyric matching, I'm very partial to the fade-outs and quick-flashes and overall look of the vid. It is love.
