05:08 pm "The Cat, Selling" by valerienne (Gen, PG-13)
Like almost everyone else, I apologize for being late. Unlike everyone else, I'm ridiculously last-minute, and I'm even more sorry: the month got away from me. On to the fic:

Lotrips (LOTR RPS) as a fandom is carrying on despite the cast dispersal, and even gaining new writers, to our surprised delight. I'm reccing more recent fic, from 2008 on, to show how good we have it now. I'm also trying to give a taste of the variety of writing styles and pairings.

Fandom: LoTRiPS
Pairing: ensemble LOTR cast genfic
Length: ficlet
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] valerienne
Author Website:
Contains: (skip) marijuana use
Why this must be read: The Fellowship of the Cast is one thing that makes this fandom tick, and [livejournal.com profile] valerienne illustrates how this works under (self-inflicted) pressure. It's almost, but not quite crack!fic, Dom/Elijah implied, snarky dialog all around, and someone unexpected takes action

05:13 pm The Secret Santa Affair by rabidsamfan (PG-13)
Whew. Managed to get the van back to the garage just in time. A big thank you to everyone who read the recs and stories and to those of you who commented here and to the authors directly. Sharing my favorites has been a lot of fun, and I hope some of you will decide to do the same. You can sign up to drive the van here.

Fandom: MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin
Length: ~3,400
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rabidsamfan
Author Website: rabidsamfan on AO3

Why this must be read:

I decided to do one more rec this month, something just for fun. The MFU van is in the garage every December, so I figured we should celebrate Christmas in July.

What do you get the Secret Agent who needs nothing? Illya ponders the question when he draws Napoleon in the UNCLE Secret Santa pool. Smart, funny banter, delicious innuendo, and perhaps the unlikeliest gift that Napoleon has ever gotten make this story charming, fizzy fun. And among other treats, we get to imagine Illya in the bright orange sweater his Secret Santa knit just for him. If only my office parties were like this.

"You're a good dancer," Napoleon observed.

Now Illya knew his face to be coloring up obtrusively. "I like girls," he found himself mumbling. Which he did, if not exclusively.

Napoleon nodded complacently. "I like coffee," he observed, and then paused to look into the display windows of yet another one of the shops. "But I have been known to indulge in the occasional cup of tea."

07:00 pm Jameson's Whiskey by mrkinch (Adult)
Fandom: LotRiPS
Pairing: Sean Bean/Viggo Mortensen
Length: ficlet
Author on LJ: mrkinch @ dreamwidth
Author Website: mrkinch Lotrips on Archive of Our Own
Why this must be read:March, 2009, at Empire awards, Sean presented Viggo with a Jameson-sponsored Icon Award and provided us lots of photos of them cavorting, and Viggo's speech. The pairing (Sean/Viggo) is a fandom favorite, and it's gratifying to see that they still do love each other.

This ficlet works with what we could see and takes it further, until innuendo about swords leads to happy sex, multipurpose showers, and the final rambling interview and photo

08:43 pm VID REC: Heroes - People Get Ready
Vidder: heresluck
Musical artist: The Frames
Pairing: None

Vidder's website: heresluck.net
Why this vid kicks ass: One of my favorite things about the first season of Heroes its scope and ambition. This is a gorgeous vid, and it captures the feel of the entire season splendidly, all the joy and darkness and anticipation and interconnectedness of the Heroes universe.

11:20 pm Near the Border by InsteadofDeath (NC-17)
Fandom: Naruto
Pairing: Naruto/Sasuke
Length: Long
Author on LJ: InsteadofDeath
Why this must be read:

For my final rec of the month, I'd like to introduce you to InsteadofDeath's captivating fic, Near the Border. A long assignment forces Naruto and Sasuke together again after Sasuke finally returns to Konoha. But what do these old teammates really have in common now?

I've re-read this story several times and get something new each time. It's seems deceptively simple but the wealth of history and the relationship between the two ninjas - which is never obvious until the end - is in every look, insult and comment. If we are lucky, the author will give us more, but for now I hope you enjoy Near the Border.
