Why this must be read: Ok, I will confess that I have a bias. I love spikesgirl58's writing, I could spend all twelve of my allotted recs just on her Foothills and Mouths of Babes stories. Those are two of the universes she has created to continue the lives of Illya and Napoleon past where the series ended. And then there is the whole Working Stiffs cycle. Yeah, I could spend all month telling you how lovely those are. But here is a pair of stories that are a little different. When she asks "What If" or "How Did", she comes up with these little bits of wonderful. How did Alexander come to bring Illya into the UNCLE? What if Napoleon really was the heir to the throne? I think this pair of stories paints a wonderful portrait of Alexander and his understanding of those under his command and of his private life. I do hope you will enjoy this last visit with Alexander before we continue on our way next week.

Why this must be read:

3rd-party POV is one of the trickiest things to "get right" in XF fic; the world of Mulder and Scully is so terribly claustrophobic that allowing others to witness it can seem like a violation. And yet, when it works, it's among the most effective techniques possible, because we, the reader, know so much more than the narrator, so the details s/he relates are meaningful to us in ways they cannot be to her.

The stripper narrator of this story is observant and analytical, and the picture she paints of the stranger in the bar, who we recognize as Mulder during Scully's abduction, is compelling. This story also has a little hook in it at the end, which always grabs me and tugs, just a little: a reminder of what the emotional stakes are like in this fictional world.

The story is rated NC-17 for language and underpaid naked ladies.

Why this must be read:

Midnight Train is a slight au, in which John ends up as Cam's military physiotherapist after the crash in Antarctica. I love how miss-zedem writes Cam;s confused attraction to John pretty much from the beginning, and how he goes back and forth between 'let's be friends' and 'no, let's be professionals.' I love how she writes John in this - still very recognisably John, but happier and less pressured than our John, cooking food Cam will like anf flirting with him and being so supportive and positive the whole way through.

And, as an added bonus, though they're neither of them in it much, miss-zedem does a lovely job with both Carter and Lorne, particularly Carter as the supportive, sensitive friend.
