01:15 am There Has Never Been Anything False About Hope (Except This) by soda_and_capes (PG)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Doctor/Master (RPF!Doctor/RPF!Master)
Length: 1003 words
Author on LJ: soda_and_capes
Author Website: Fic Master Post
Why this must be read:

After the first part of "The End of Time" aired, there were a lot of baffled Who fans wondering about all the episode's references to President Obama. What was the point? Was there a point?

Until the weirdness was brought to my attention, I just unthinkingly assumed that RTD had read this story, and was making an awkward attempt at a shout-out.

It would be/have been a well-deserved shout-out, because OMG hilarious.

The worst part (besides, did he mention, the American accent) is that he has to regularly restrain himself from saying 'I am Barack Obama, and you will obey me.' )

05:53 am Salt of the Earth by Dasha (R)
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard, just not
Length: novel
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dashamte
Author Website: Most SG fic is at Area 52 - Dasha; there are some crossovers other places, including her LJ.

Why this must be read:

I thought that getting the keys to the SG franchise crackvan so late would mean that nothing I love would be left to be rec'd. I was completely wrong.

Dasha is one of those authors (like Bujold or Heinlein) who makes you think her grocery list would be engaging reading, and she's been my gateway to several fandoms, including SGA (I first met John Sheppard and Rodney McKay in a Sentinel XO, to be rec'd later).

Salt of the Earth is Dasha at her finest; it's adventure, it's science fiction, it's unrequited love that stays unrequited (but that's okay!), and it has the best h/c scene I've ever read (beginning midway through the first part, if you don't want to be bothered with, yk, PLOT :-) ).

A snippet from a bit later )

To Salt of the Earth:
Part One: In Dark Places
Part Two: Worse Things Than Love
Part Three: Something at the End of the Tunnel...

08:42 pm Requiem for Innocence by Lara Garek (PG-13)
Hi, it's me again [livejournal.com profile] kanders07 driving the van for September (hey someone left a candy wrapper in here). I've got lots of stories for you and I hope you enjoy my offerings. I'm especially trying to find things that either haven't been seen before or haven't been seen in a long while. Let's go!

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: none
Length: about 23,600 words
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: http://www.file40.net/
Why this must be read: I've had this story bookmarked for a very long time. Reading it again, I remembered why. The story is intense and written in such a way that you continue reading in order to find out what exactly happened to young Illya Nickovetch Kuryakin. Without giving any of the story away. Illya meets someone from his past and eventually lays demons to rest.

Here's a little tidbit for you:

"The young woman wrapped her wool coat closely around her as she walked briskly south on Seventh Avenue. With her free hand she pulled the collar up against her short auburn hair and ducked her chin down against the wind. The library had closed at ten and Anna Ryan wasn't finished with the paper that was due in her economics class Thursday. She had made a quick stop at the coffee shop for a large dose of caffeine before heading for home. It was going to be a long night."
