Why this must be read:

This is a beautiful ghost story, just perfect for this Halloween season. I say beautiful because (IF) Hutch is a ghost, he is going to be a beautiful one. Read and enjoy!

"Starsky?"

He whirls, peering into the dimness of the unlit bedroom. A tall shadow looms there, and then the shadow steps into the light.

"You son of a bitch!" Starsky crows. The little watering can hits the floor with a plastic clatter. "Where the hell have you been?" Arms outstretched, he grabs Hutch and spins him around. "You've been driving me nuts! Oh my god!" He throws his arms around his friend and thumps him on the back. "You're cold enough we could take an ice pick to you and drop you in a scotch. Come on," he says, steering the unresisting figure to the sofa, " sit down. I'll get you a blanket. Hutch, where have you been?"

Why this must be read: - At a police conference, Simon assigns Blair a room with someone else, while he shares a room with Jim.

I often think with shorter stories that it could have been very tempting to have made them much longer, and I admire the restraint that goes into leaving them short, because, as in this case, it works perfectly the length it is. Every word counts as we learn some of the ins and outs of the relationship between Jim and Blair, and how Simon sees it.

Author on LJ: I don't know, sadly.
Author website: As above.

Why this must be read: Another lovely, believable take on the Lavish/Bartlett pairing, this short snippet perfectly captures the mood and feel of Forster's Florence -- or at least, the characters' perceptions of it, as a wild, colourful place, where even the most uptight person can let her hair down.
