10:10 am The Business of Lies by angstbunny (PG)

Fandom: STAR TREK RPF
Pairing: Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto
Length: ~3300
Author on LJ: [info]angstbunny
Author Website:
Masterpost
Why this must be read:
Here's the thing: actors act. This story feels very much like 'the truth' - probably because Chris's feelings so closely mirror my own whenever I watch his interviews with Zach. Even eighteen months later, I still go back and forth between actors act, and but that can't be just an act.

First, we'll kick off with a classic Cal/Gillian fic.

Fandom: LIE TO ME
Pairing: Cal/Gillian
Length: 15,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] her_pseudonym
Author Website: A Room of Her Own
Why this must be read:

Summary from the fic: Cal loved taking control just as much as she enjoyed surrendering it. A happy coincidence that meant she was now having the hottest sex of her life. With her best friend. [livejournal.com profile] her_pseudonym has a well-deserved reputation for writing brilliantly-characterized Cal and Gillian and smoking-hot sex. Plus, she wonderfully balances angst, fluff and smut.

12:43 pm Small Fandom Month!
December is Small Fandom Month on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van!

Sign up below if you want to make recs. First priority will go to fandoms that have never been featured here, followed by fandoms that have been featured a few times, followed by fandoms that were previously full-time but are now retired.

Note #1: a fandom doesn't actually have to be small to be recced -- there are still lots of big fandoms that have never been featured on the community!

Note #2: If you are signing up a fandom that has never been recced here, a fandom overview will be required. Overviews should include pics and biographies of main characters, story arcs, and links to fandom archives and communities, at minimum. Picture hosting is available on my webspace.

Thanks!

04:44 pm The Full Monty by executrix (NC-17)
Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Kaylee/Bourne
Length: 3,234 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] executrix
Author Website: just her lj
Why this must be read: To make some extra coin for engine parts, Kaylee enters a stripping contest at a bar owned by good old Monty. Coincidentally, Bourne from Paradiso happens to be in attendance. I love the way E'trix uses minor characters from canon to great effect, and keeps their voices and characters wonderfully recognizable, even with so little canon to draw upon as example. She brings a satisfying sense of depth to both characters, too. The dialogue is witty and sparkling, and the descriptions are funny and clever and occasionally lyrical. Zoe's dry, often deadpan humor in particular makes for some awesome lines. Most of all, I also, as in canon, love Kaylee's uninhibited, earthy pride and joy in her body, which is showcased just beautifully here.

Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Ianto, Gwen, Jack, John Hart, Canon Pairings, past Ianto/OMC
Length: ~10 000 words.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dani_the_girl
Author Website: fic tag on Dreamwidth / dani_the_girl on AO3
Why this must be read:

While investigating some suspicious deaths, the Torchwood team come across yet another psycho ex-boyfriend, and for once it's not one of Jack's.

This is an engaging post-S2 casestory with good characterization, and one of the earliest stories to expand on and make good use of Ianto's backstory as revealed in 'Fragments'.

Excerpt: "We're just keeping an eye on things for Chandlers," Ianto said, randomly naming one of the companies with a unit close by. "Jack just got bored and went wandering. Long night shift."

"Webleys standard issue to private security grunts these days, are they?" Nick retorted with sarcasm. "You can tell your boss, who ever that is, that I'm sharing my supply with no one. And as for you, it's not in your interest to get me into trouble, see." Ianto's throat tightened and he flipped the switch to take the conversation off the speakers should Gwen be finished in the weapons locker before it was done.

"You've nothing left from that," he said, trying to keep his voice level. "Just leave it, Nick."

"Want to bet?" Nick's reply came back taunting and confident. "After you did a runner? I went back and picked up some insurance. You head back down what ever rabbit hole you've been hiding and leave well alone."

Fandom: ANGEL
Pairing: Wesley/Faith
Length: ~4,300
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Axis of Love
Why this must be read:

This series is a fascinating look at Wesley and Faith as they go on the run with Connor and have to learn to trust one another. These two characters are so haunted and broken in so many ways, and I loved the author's exploration of their relationship and how they really do need each other.

“Angel has a son,” he offered bluntly.

“Well that’s… different,” Faith replied wryly, “but I’m still not seeing the reason for you standing here. If Angel wanted me to know I’m pretty sure he would have...”

“There’s a prophecy,” Wesley said with a sigh, cutting her off. He allowed the words to hang briefly between them before elaborating, “The father will kill the son.” He closed the remaining steps that separated them, grasping her shoulders firmly he leaned down and whispered against her hair, “I need a slayer. I need you, Faith. Someone I can trust to get the job done.”
