Why this must be read: You weren’t friends. Not then. Not yet. I have a confession: I don't really like William Shatner. This is not saying anything bad about his talent, or intelligence, or integrity or anything like that. It's just- I know that if I knew him as a person he would drive me absolutely insane. This is a story that feels like it could be true because it so perfectly captures that 'Bill, you are driving me crazy!' exasperation that so many people around him express. This is a story about Leonard Nimoy hating William Shatner- until he doesn't, and it is brilliant.

This fic is the closest I will ever get to mpreg. That is, it's one of those awesome fics where magically (and not involving anatomy beyond the sex) the two male characters have a kid together. Only, while this is a happy story, it certainly doesn't start out that way.

Dean never even knew he had a son until Anna kidnaps him so Dean can meet him. Daniel is an "abomination" so Castiel has been hiding from Heaven and everyone else. But a lot happens in five years and both angel and man have grown up and grown apart.

God, I love this story so much. It's sad, it's realistic, it's happy and wonderful. It makes me heart ache because I'm all about the Dean/Cas OTP, but really, Sam will always come first for Dean and in this story their son will always come first for Cas. But it's right. And it doesn't mean Dean and Cas aren't meant to be.

This story is absolutely one of my favorites. The way Daniel is written and Castiel's protectiveness of him, as well as the relationship angst between Dean and Cas gets me every time. And despite being kid!fic, it's remarkably in character for all parties involved. Brilliantly done.

Because this piece gives Angel/Cordelia fans the happy ending that canon never gave us. In this AU Cordelia doesn't wakes up at that precise moment in time so she can say good-bye, and Angel lives through another almost-apocalypse and finds himself miles away from LA when a familiar someone walks into a bar. I love this pairing and [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] has created a beautiful story that everyone should read.

Why this must be read:  Well, because although this has been recc'd here before (back in 2006) I do believe it's worth another one.  While there are certainly other good stories which feature or focus on Nathan and Rain, this one is just such a lovely look at the character of Nathan, his skills, his motivations and some of his patients.   He and Rain are the first canon "couple" we meet in the show and in this piece they are still very much a potential pairing rather than an actual one.  I always like that Rain, in her own quiet way, is the pursuer.

Nathan coughs and shifts a little, squinting at the splinter as though that will make him focus. A small, irregular burst of air hits the top of his head and she might be laughing at him, but he can’t quite care. He finally works the splinter free, holding her small hand firmly in his, and studies the bit of wood for a moment before giving in and raising his head. He’s ready to say something stupid like That was a tough one, Miss Rain, but the words get lost somewhere along the way.

Kim calls this a happy ending, yet it hits you like a sucker punch. It's everything you want for Dean: a family, normal, a world saved. But there's Castiel, too, and he can't forget. It's tragically beautiful in its execution and angst. I absolutely cried the first time I read this.

Why this must be read:

There's an incredible chemistry between Sapphire and Steel, if they were human, we'd call it UST, but they're not, and the intricacies of the relationship between them remain unclear. Still, we can't help but wonder... Steel, with his irascibility often seems more human than the serenely elegant Sapphire, so it's easier to impute human feelings to him, and S & S ship fics tend to feature Steel angst.

"Transgressive Sight" takes a different tack, incandescens gives us Sapphire's view of Steel: she captures the otherness of the way Sapphire watches him, what she sees--and what she lets him see.

This is quite a recent story, posted to Proslib for Halloween. I very seldom read short stories and I tried this one simply because it began with the words "George Cowley did not consider himself as an unduly fastidious man (...) You know my foible, and there are so few Cowley-centered fics; I couldn't miss this one, though I usually avoid the supernatural. But as soon as I started reading I was enthralled by the sheer evocative power of the writing, its way of stirring raw fear, anguish and wonder in the reader's mind, thrown in a gloomy world of turmoil and confusion, where lights are more threatening than darkness.

The summary says: "When Cowley's life is in danger, he receives help from an unusual and terrifying source". His two loyal agents are still there with him but strangely transformed:

"What's happening?" he gasped.

Doyle turned his head, and Cowley saw one green eye, and one stark yellow, the scarlet pupil slit like a cat's. He jerked back from the sight, fighting the urge to throw open the door and fling himself out into the passing night.

"Don't do it, sir," Bodie said calmly. "You really don't want to meet what's out there right now."

I don't think I can add anything without spoiling the thrill. Like the previous story I recced here, it's all about moral dilemmas, the choices we make and their consequences, power, guilt and responsibility.
