palmaceae here, slipping into the driver's seat for the very first Sanctuary recs on crack_van. May there be many more recs in the future! Many of the recs will be centered on The Five, but I'll try to throw in some other characters as well. Mostly gen and het with a bit of slash here and there. If I disappear for several days, that's because I'm busy freaking out over my LSATs next week. But don't worry - I've been saving up fics for months. I'll make sure you have plenty to read before the month is over. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Gen; Clara/Will Length: 2,839 words Author on LJ: mad_maudlinAuthor Website: Mad_Maudlin @ AO3, 10leaguesbeyondWhy this must be read: An excellent character study and history of Clara Griffin, who unfortunately only appeared for four episodes. We learn very little about Clara onscreen, but there are many juicy little hints about her past that Mad_Maudlin does a fantastic job elaborating on. The magnificent evolution of a troubled girl into a courageous woman. They'd like to see through me, but nothing is more opaque than absolute transparency. - Margaret Atwood Chiaroscuro

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Nikola Length: 2,231 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Isagel @ AO3Why this must be read: This is one hell of a smoking hot and well written fic. Nikola, Helen and the 1920's would have hit the spot right there, but Isagel throws in electricity too and sparks fly, literally and metaphorically. "I merely think that we would be wrong to use our gifts to bring about violence."
He smiles, a wicked twist of his broad mouth, and leans close.
"No," he says, and raises his hand - the one that's not holding his coupe of champagne - to her face, stroking a stray lock of hair back behind her ear. "I can think of far more interesting uses for them, can't you?"Current of Time

Fandom: HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY Pairing: Arthur/Fenchurch (implied past Arthur/Ford) Length: 1200 Author on LJ: murderofoneroseAuthor Website: their FFN profileWhy this must be read:Fenchurch was easily the love of Arthur’s life, yet despite this, she doesn’t show up in the fandom all that often. So, you can probably imagine my glee when a fic bearing her name in the summary pops up. Takes place in the middle of So Long etc, just after Ford breaks into Arthur’s house and trashes it (seriously. These two are meant to be best friends). The author has one of the best Ford voices I’ve come across, and has his insane Betelgeusian illogic down perfectly, which makes this otherwise rather sweet fic also quite hilarious. Thanks for all the Love

Fandom: PRIMEVAL Pairing: Nick/Ryan Length: 1,088 Author on LJ: fififolle Author Website: Author’s masterlist HEREWhy this must be read: The moment in the very first episode when the long-suffering Special Forces leader, Captain Ryan, takes direct action to deal with the stubborn scientist he’s been charged with bringing back safely from a trip to the past, is a very popular one with fans. And this story is a lovely look at what might have happened between the two men when they’re safely back in their own time. The author captures both men’s characters beautifully. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: John/Nikola Length: 3,347 words Author on LJ: skidmoAuthor Website: skidmo_ficWhy this must be read: So normally I'm really not into slash at all, but the Five are just so shippable with each other that I make an exception. Playing off the fact that Nikola has survived some incredibly brutal things like getting impaled and having a fist through his abdomen, this fic features several really violent interactions between John and Nikola. John always had it in for Nikola and it totally works. A good exploration of John's ripper tendencies and Nikola's headspace. The first time was an accident. Nikola is fairly certain about this.Five Times Druitt Tried to Kill Tesla

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John Length: 3,347 words Author on LJ: nocleversigAuthor Website: NoCleverSig @ ff.netWhy this must be read: This is one of the few series I've seen written for this fandom, and certainly one of the longest. Clocking in at 11 stories so far and counting, NoCleverSig just keeps cranking out good work. The series deals with Helen and John getting back together after Helen rids John of the energy creature. It's a long and bumpy road for the two of them with stories ranging from comedic to dark, happy to heartbreaking. Stories can be read as stand alones if you don't want to read the whole thing in one sitting. No Destination In Mind Series

Fandom: CHUCK Pairing: Casey/Chuck (Casey, Chuck, Ellie, Devon) Length: 900 words and 9000 words Author on LJ: sal_at_homeAuthor Website: couldn't find anything Why this must be read: I don't read a lot of sweet, longing, romantic romance and most het and slash I'll be reccing will not be it, so I thought I'd start with this fic, which is a classical fic of love lost. And found, of course. In the sequel. And then lost again. I think you get the drift. In this story, the team splits up and Sarah walks out on Chuck, and Casey carries a torch for Chuck. However, he doesn't tell him. Because he's Casey. While being a Chuck/Casey writer myself, I still find this pairing very difficult to pull off. One of the many reasons for that is that I believe Casey would rather eat some of his own body parts than tell Chuck how he feels. sal_at_home managed to solve this problem very successfully. This is a Chuck who has grown ready to take action, and a Casey who's once been confuddled enough by Carina to be left tied to a bedpost. Now if Carina could do that to him, think of what he'd do when confronted with real feelings. Heh. The ending of the second fic is wide open, as it should be in a story that is very much about future prospects and loose ends. Goodbye and Christmas Meeting

Fandom: WAREHOUSE 13 Pairing: Artie/James; Mrs. Frederic and OCs Length: 13,436 in 2 parts Author on LJ: littlenotebook Why this must be read:Artie and James are probably my favourite pairing in Warehouse 13. Mainly because they could be canon but mostly because they are so cute! The snark! The established relationship vibes! The kidnappings! :) This story follows the beginning of their partnership or, as the author says: The story of Arthur Nielson and James MacPherson. Partners at the Warehouse leading to love and loss and maybe even hate. What their relationship was really like before they wanted to kill each other.Excerpt: James MacPherson arrived wearing a suit and tie, a bit over dressed for the Warehouse but how was he to know that? Artie met him outside with a plate of cookies. He'd been baking a bit more lately what with no one else around the Warehouse.
“You must be James MacPherson,” Artie said, holding out the plate.
“Do you tend to get many unexpected visitors out here?” James said, looking down at the plate but not taking a cookie.
“No, not really,” Artie replied, lowering the hand holding the plate. “But you could be a spy for all I know.”Life Less Ordinary by Littlenotebook

Fandom: The LosersPairing: None Word Count: 2259 words Author: entwinedangelsAuthor's website: LivejournalAuthor's warnings: "offscreen violence, hard to follow conversations and swearing. Let us never forget the swearing." Why this must be read:Dialogue-only stories are difficult to pull off without seeming like too much of an affectation or ridiculously twee. But get a team like the Losers, a talkative dork like Jensen, and a Honduran mission gone awry, and you've got a dialogue-only story that's tense, exciting and delightful. You can hear the actor's voices saying these words, you can see the characters doing what they're doing, and it's beautifully done. Excerpt: Jensen, shut up or I will cut you.
Oh come on, Roque, you know I love you. I love all of my Honduran jungle brothers. I even still love Cougar, though he tried to shoot my ears off last month. I LOVE YOU COUGAR!
"..."
See that silence? That's an 'I love you too' silence.
That's a 'Got your forehead in my crosshairs' silence.Just a stylistic warning, though. The different characters are represented by changes in the text colour. It looks fine on a white background, but there might be issues if you have a different background colour set up on your browser. However, if you take out the text colouring, it's still fairly easy to figure out who is saying what. Less Chatter On The Comms, Men
