12:31 am Family Dinner by penknife (PG)
Fandom: SANCTUARY
Pairing: none (minor Helen/John UST, James/John UST)
Length: ~ 2,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] penknife
Author Website: Penknife @ AO3
Why this must be read: penknife is one of the best authors in this fandom, hands down. I try not to rec authors more than twice in one run, but I'll probably be breaking that rule this month because it is so difficult to choose from among these amazing fics. This is one of my favorite fics in the fandom because Helen, John, James and Ashley all sitting together at the dinner table trying to make it through the meal without killing each other during Revelations Part 1 is possibly the fic I've been waiting for my entire life (well, at least since I started watching Sanctuary). This fic is done from Henry's POV, which is so perfect because although Henry sees everything going on before him, he isn't able to connect all the pieces - penknife leaves it up to the readers to put it together for themselves. penknife pays attention to all the little details, which are at times hilarious. As Ashley puts it, this is the world's most awkward family reunion and it's just awesome.

02:12 pm The Ides of April by constantmuse (R)
Fandom Raffles, the Amateur Cracksman
Pairing A.J. Raffles/Bunny Manders, slash
Length 2100 words
Author on LJ [livejournal.com profile] constantmuse
Why this must be read: This title is taken from "The Ides of March," the first tale in the original series by E.W. Hornung. One of Bunny's best attributes is his air of sweet innocence, according to Raffles, who never hesitates to use that innocence to his advantage. And it is this innocence that Bunny risks in order to get what he really wants from his dearest friend. [livejournal.com profile] constantmuse places the story perfectly in context with book canon and employs an excellent command of Victorian style. Her writing flows with a natural assurance that makes every one of her stories a pleasure to read.

04:28 pm The Spot (PG)
Fandom: HOT FUZZ
Pairing: Nicholas Angel/Danny Butterman
Length: 1200 words
Author:[livejournal.com profile] dr_tectonic
Location of fic: [livejournal.com profile] sandfordpolice :
Why this must be read:

A really sweet story about the embarrassing and mundane things we do for love.

Excerpt:

It was not a story that he would ever tell anyone, because it was intensely unromantic and embarrassing, not to mention a little bit gross and disgusting, but Danny Butterman knew the exact moment when he realized that Nicholas Angel loved him just as much as he loved Nick. Maybe more.

07:18 pm An Average Day in Paradise by elfinessy (NC17)
Fandom: PRIMEVAL
Pairing: Nick/Stephen
Length: 5,685
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] elfinessy
Author Website:  None
Why this must be read: The relationship between Nick Cutter and Stephen Hart is central to the first two series and is a very popular pairing in fanfic. This author writes superb Nick/Stephen in a wide variety of stories, with fix-its figuring very heavily, because there’s an awful lot in this part of the canon that needs fixing! This story is told from the point of view of various characters, all in the first person, which works very well indeed and lends a great depth and immediacy.

This way to the fic...

Why this must be read: [livejournal.com profile] sparky77 is one of my favorite authors I turn to when I want to read something humorous in this fandom.

This has a perfect Ray voice. Love him and the dialog, so very funny and them. And I love how you can see the worry and care underneath it all. Also, I love outsider!pov on a pairing and this Ray is perfect for this part.

Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: none (gen)
Length: 28,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lamiel_writes
Author Website: Author on Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:
I love the way this author writes Sherlock's thought process. I love the twisted little games that Sherlock and Moriarty play and how John is caught in the middle. I love the little puzzles and the action-thriller pace of this story. It's quite an enjoyable read.

09:51 pm Here Is Where We Rest Our Hearts, by Maratonista (R)
Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Cougar/Jensen
Length: 1461
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] maratonista

Why this must be read:
Maratonista is known for her epic series of angst and tragedy, but I tend to think that this is one of her best stories, full stop. With short bursts of imagery and feeling, the story is so obviously Cougar that it could've been written in bullets from his rifle.

It's so achingly bittersweet and filled with small joys and darkening clouds overhead that it just kills me a little every time I read it.

It's the kind of story that you cling to, tightly, fearing that it'll slip away one day. But while it's still here, you love it.

Excerpt:
It’s not perhaps the first night in their home that Cougar had always dreamed of, but he wakes up with Jensen drooling on his shoulder, and birds chirping in his ear, and the modest, white house with the deck and the porch and the pretty flower bed filled garden is his.

His and Jensen’s.

So maybe it is actually better.

11:51 pm First Sight by calliope85 (PG-13)
Fandom: RAFFLES
Pairing: A.J. Raffles/Bunny Manders
Length: 4,757 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] calliope85
Author Website: Avernus
Why this must be read:

The Raffles series is full of firsts. The first time we meet Raffles, it is in conjunction with Bunny's first heist. There is the first time they nearly get caught. Then there's the first time Raffles breaks his pledge never to steal from a host, eventually cumulating into the first time they are arrested, and the first time Raffles escapes.

In this story, it is Bunny's and Raffles's first kiss. Along the way, we learn what good turn it was that Bunny did for Raffles during those schoolboy days. A nice childhood adventure, filled with capers, daring-do, and narrow squeaks, we learn that even rabbits are resourceful. This story has become part of my personal headcanon.
