Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Nikola friendship, Helen/Will friendship Length: 1,860 words Author on LJ: rowan_dAuthor Website: Rowan Darkstar @ ff.net, Fic TagWhy this must be read: I'm mainly reccing this fic because Helen calls Nikola "Nikky" and it does NOT make me want to puke. I'd say it's a miracle, but it's more like Rowan is just that good of a writer. A wonderful post ep for Sleepers where Helen and Nikola are actually able to open up to each other. Raw yet incredibly sweet and touching. She only drank two glasses of wine. Two glasses is her limit. One glass makes her warmer. Two relaxes the cramps in the backs of her calves. Three she grows talkative. Four, and the walls fall away. Helen Magnus can't afford more than two glasses of wine. Echoes

Fandom: SHERLOCK Pairing: none Length: 3,155 words Author on LJ: lillyankhAuthor Website: More of this author's work can be found on her LJ under the fanfiction tag. Why this must be read:Some truly, incredibly fantastic horror stories came out in this fandom around Halloween. I had a lot of trouble choosing which story by this author that I wanted to recommend (truly, it would have been the Doctor Who crossover if the community rules had allowed more than one crossover rec and I almost recommended the pleasure-by-remote story, too), but I really wanted to showcase some of the excellent horror fiction that the fandom has so I chose this one. (Note that several of the authors I have previously recommended this month have also written some spectacular horror fanfic for Sherlock, too, if you are interested in that sort of thing.) Transcripts of Lestrade interviewing Sherlock in a high-security psychiatric institute for the violently insane. WARNINGS: Psychological suspense, supernatural elements, murder, main character death, horrific images. This is not a story to read at night right before bed, mmkay? SM Case Files

Fandom: CHUCK Pairing: Morgan, Anna (Anna, Morgan, Casey) Length: one-shot Author on LJ: goddessofbirthAuthor Website: fic listWhy this must be read: There are quite a few stories of how Anna became (or just is) a spy, as you can see from the fact that this is already my second rec on that theme. But since there can never be enough Anna fic, that is in no way a bad thing. This writer apparently took offense when Anna left Morgan for a Hibachi chef (understandably), offering an explanation of what really happened (successfully). It features Anna being kind and loving (while still being Anna) as well as Morgan worrying about his knife skills, and one of Casey's wishes coming true. The thing that makes this story work is the fact that goddessofbirth keeps things simple - you'll probably see the twist coming from a mile away, but that's just because she's letting you. Fandom: SHERLOCK Pairing: none (although the author rates it as John/Sherlock pre-slash) Length: about 7,000ish words Author on LJ: snowdarkredAuthor Website: More fiction from this author can be found on their LJ under the fanfiction tag. Why this must be read:I have a somewhat unabashed love of AU fic, as you can probably tell by how much of it I have recommended this month. I also love crossovers, but this totally doesn't count as a crossover fic because it was only inspired by the novel Sunshine by Robin McKinley, ok? Right. Right. *waves hands* These are not the droids you're looking for... Here is the author's summary of the story: The Wars turned the world on its head, and in that unrivaled chaos, John Watson was born with a rare gift. Sherlock, naturally, was born with an even rarer one. Years after the Wars end and the Others return to their dark lairs, two men are introduced by a well-meaning mutual acquaintance. And their world is upturned yet again. When the War Fires Fade

Fandom: The Losers Pairing: Clay/Roque Author on LJ: entwinedangelsAuthor's Website: Master Fiction ListWhy this must be read:It's a story, it's fanart, it's a ridiculous combination of both, where Jensen decides to tell the epic story of Clay and Roque, and Cougar and Pooch keep on interrupting. It looks like the long and detailed notes you used to pass back and forth between you and your friends while sitting in class, but a hell of a lot more hilarious (unless you were writing slash with your friends during class). Entwinedangels uses two pens and a pencil, three different types of handwriting, and comedy stick figure sketches to get each personality across. And despite all the odds, it works. It's short, hilarious and so in character that you can just see the three of them, stuck in a room with nothing to do, scribbling the total true love of Clay and Roque. Excerpt:So like "Oh Clay you're so hot! I want you" Roque moves towards him in a manly manner. Clay reaches out a hand, tracing Roque's jaw. He pulls him close and holds kisses? gives him a soulful gaze. Oh yeah, because they're really going to gaze soulfully.Losers Fic

Fandom: SHERLOCK Pairing: none (gen) Length: about 17,800 words Author on LJ: dayjaAuthor Website: More of this writer's great stories can be found on their LJ linked above. Why this must be read:I love this author's work. This story is about all of the little bits of life -- the good and the bad -- that lead Sherlock and John to be the men that they are. Parts of this story are flashbacks to their lives as children and it is brilliantly done, everything leading up to the culmination. I particularly love the care that Mycroft shows towards his brother in this story. All around excellent story here, like a lovely mosaic made of beautiful gems that sparkle distractingly and then you pull back and see the entire picture and it is even more beautiful. Drowning

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 5,493 words Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown Why this must be read: A visit to the Reform Club leads to the ending of a chapter in the history of The Five. Before Nigel finally appeared on screen in For King and Country, we knew very little about his character. For that reason, various depictions of Nigel appear in fanfic. This story features one of them, and although it doesn't match the Nigel they showed us, it's an interesting piece anyway. If Nigel isn't your cup of tea, I'd read this fic anyway for the excellent conversation between John and James about the Ripper. The writer misspells Magnus and Griffin's names along with several other words, which would usually be unforgivable, but in this case, the fic is a good enough read that I can overlook it. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 2,321 words Author on LJ: sadiefloodAuthor Website: SadieFlood @ AO3Why this must be read: Five members of the Sanctuary team, plus Nikola Tesla, spend one eventful holiday in four very different ways. Another great Yuletide fic. This fic reads like an episode of the show - this is so the way Christmas would go for them. All the characters are spot on perfect, the plot is great, and the snark flows as easily as the libations. Four Christmases

Fandom: GENERATION KILL Pairing: Gen; Nate, Ray, Trombley, and Brad Length: ~ 2,400 words Author on LJ: moneyfolderAuthor websites: Why this must be read: I love stories that deal with the re-integration of the characters into this so-called normal life. They aren't the same men they were before they went to Iraq. These are really great little character pieces, all of them. My favorite of them is Trombley though. Often he is portrayed a little one-dimensional. Here however he is real and fleshed out. Wired for Light (or, Four Things That Didn't Happen To Nate, Ray, Trombley, and Brad After Iraq)

An excellent angsty look at the aftermath of the funeral and a poignant look at Helen and John's relationship, past and present. Dreamt the Dark Angel

The soldier’s struggle to regain his health and maintain his relationship with Stephen is heart-rending in its intensity at times and sucks the reader in and keeps you there with them, every step of the way.
