Fandom: SHERLOCK Pairing: Lestrade/Mycroft Length: 21,700 words Author on LJ: elfbertAuthor Website: Fic MasterlistWhy this must be read:Generally, fanfic is a short story genre with known setting and background, and thus can sometimes be short on atmospheric details. This story has a splendiferous feast of details that drag the reader in. The premise is that Mycroft's driver accidentally hits Lestrade on his motorcycle one evening. The characterization of the whole story is gorgeous and the relationship between the two progresses slowly and believably. Very enjoyable story, I highly recommend it! Impact

Fandom: SHERLOCK Pairing: none (gen) Length: a bit under 20,000 words Author on LJ: trillsabellsAuthor Website: More fic by this author can be found on their LJ linked above. Why this must be read:Sherlock gets turned into a 5-year old child. Dodgy science for the win, because the image of Sherlock as a child is just all sorts of adorable. There is more mystery and several twists to the story than just that, but I don't want to spoil it. Just know that this story makes me want to snuggle it and left me grinning from ear to ear. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/Bigfoot friendship Length: 1,500 words Author on LJ: a_loquitaAuthor Website: a.loquita @ ff.net, Fanfic MasterlistWhy this must be read: A wonderful look at Helen and the Big Guy's relationship as well as Big Guy's love of reading and some nice backstory. a.loquita has the Big Guy down so perfectly with his taste in trashy books, and a very humorous scene about the Big Guy needing reading glasses. She thought about putting her foot down when he discovered dime-store romance novels with bodice-ripping pictures on the front. No respectable library of hers was going to contain such books.
James laughed and her and told her to let the Big Guy be. If that was his worst flaw, she should be so lucky. Big Guy only grunted, gave her a satisfied and smug look (or as close to such a thing he could manage) and turned ahead to page 78 where he knew the action got really hot.The Library

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none Length: 1467 words Author on LJ: skidmoAuthor Website: skidmo_ficWhy this must be read: This fic was written for Yuletide 2010, and since the authors won't be revealed until Jan 1, I have no additional information to give as of yet. This was a bit discouraging, but since I don't know when I'll be able to rec Sanctuary again, I thought I should rec this fic even without knowing who the wonderful author is. Author added. In this fic, Helen meets five famous historical figures, which follows perfectly in the footsteps of the show which loves to lob out all the awesome people Helen has met over the years. These meetings range from poignant and moving to loltastic and a tad scandalous. Five Times Helen Magnus Met Her Hero

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: none (minor Helen/John) Length: 773 words Author on LJ: artaxastraAuthor Website: artaxastra @ AO3, Tag ListWhy this must be read: Ok, I swear this is my last rec by artaxastra, but her stuff is just so good (and you should read all of her Sanctuary fics)! I couldn't leave this fic out. Like I said before, artaxastra keeps on coming up with these incredibly deep and insightful fics that shed so much light on the characters. This fic is an analysis of John and the Ripper by Will, and it's absolutely brilliant and makes complete sense. Of course Watson couldn't solve the case. I always thought that was because the idea of John being the killer was so ludicrous that he never considered it, but this explains it much more fully. Profile

Fandom: GENERATION KILL Pairing: Brad Colbert/Nate Fick, Ray Person/Walt Hasser Length: ~ 33,100 words Author on LJ: noelia_gAuthor websites: Why this must be read: I'm so glad that noelia_g finished this story this month, just in time for me to rec it. I was reading as a WiP, and I cheered whenever a new chapter was posted. This is an AU with demons and angels and humans, and it's just that awesome. I love the world-building, so intricate and fascinating. The characters are great too, and their interactions. Crossed in the places that you never knew to get through

Fandom: PRIMEVAL Pairing: Connor/Ryan Length: 1,774 Author on LJ: oddegg Author Website: None Why this must be read: oddegg has a wonderful knack of combining humour and hotness and she's at her best when she’s taken up residence in the head of Connor Temple, the team’s resident computer and dinosaur geek. Connor/Ryan is an unlikely pairing at first sight, and on screen they have very little direct interaction, but thanks to several fanfic writers they’ve become one of the fandom’s favourite pairings. Fandom: THE BIG BANG THEORY Pairing: Sheldon/Penny Length: 22k Author on LJ: allthingsholyAuthor Website: Fic PostWhy this must be read:In this, another from the recent bigbangbigbang, Penny moves back home to take care of her mother, and Sheldon follows her. The result is a study of Penny--bright, bubbly Penny--but it's one that digs down and lays everything bare; here, she's alone, the strong one at a time when strength seems impossible, and on top of the troubles with her family she must also deal with Sheldon, who with little explanation has left the university and his work. Lyrical and utterly moving, this is one of the best character studies of Penny I've read. ( an excerpt )& light is only now just breaking

Fandom: RIPTIDE Pairing: Nick Ryder/Cody Allen, Murray Bozinsky Length: 1700 words Author on LJ: carodeeAuthor Website: Carodee's Insatiable SiteWhy this must be read:This is one of the first fics I read in the Riptide fandom, and remains one of my favorites. It features Murray Bozinsky as accidental voyeur (well, audio voyeur) of Nick and Cody's relationship. It's a beautiful picture of Nick and Cody together from an outside viewpoint. It's also a poignant moment for Murray, hearing what he doesn't have, and it's a small window into Murray's personal understanding of sexuality--his own and others--and what that might mean for the future. Fandom: SHERLOCK Pairing: John/Sherlock Length: The series is around 56,000 words total (and who knows, there may one day be more!). Author on LJ: wordstringsAuthor Website: Unknown. Why this must be read:There are stories in this fandom that have practically become canon in the mind of many readers. There are stories that have received gushing feedback. There are stories that have spawned fanon (yeah, I really don't know what is up with the Anderson-likes-dinosaurs thing) and stories of utter cracktasticness (lobsters, oy) that have thundered through the fandom like tsunamis. And then there is this series, which has outshone them all. This series has literally taken this fandom by storm. This Sherlock is brilliantly, functionally insane. Fortunately, John's madness complements his. Just, god. Amazing stuff here. Highly, highly recommended, though not for the faint of heart. Fandom: RAFFLES / SHERLOCK HOLMES Pairing: John Watson/Bunny Manders, Sherlock Holmes/A.J. Raffles Length: over 10,000 words in 2 parts Author on LJ: lawnnunWhy this must be read:This is the most daring story in the Raffles's arsenal. Not only is it a crossover, it is also a frankly smuty story with very serious BDSM. There is a loose plot involving stealing the Junior Ganymede club book (a slight nod to P.G. Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster series), but I dare say you'll forget all about it by the time you get into part 2. The author mixes up the pairings, putting Bunny and Raffles in a rather uncomfortable position in more ways than one, but we learn a great deal more about what makes them tick that way. Fandom: The Losers Pairing: Clay/Jensen, after a fashion Length: 3709 Author on LJ: kelly_girlWhy this must be read:Clay needs tech support in his unit. There are tech robots you can buy. Clay clicks the "buy" button on the Jensen 6000, Tech Edition, and ends up with...the Jensen 6000, Triple X Edition. Yes, Clay has purchased a sexbot. And the comedy hijinx ensue. But what I love about this story is that it doesn't immediately fall into the clichés of your typical sex-robot story. There isn't any sex. Hell, there's barely kissing, and that's not about sex, that's about getting even. It's not a story about a sexbot - it's a story about being a team, no matter how weird the circumstances are. And it works so ridiculously well on that level. Jensen is a robot, but he's also Jensen, Clay is always Clay, and if Jensen occasionally slips up and offers to blow Clay, well, that's just what happens. Excerpt:The next two days were busy as they prepared for the mission. Clay watched the team integrate Jensen into the group. When Clay had first had his brilliant idea he thought he’d just turn the tech off and on when they needed it. After their initial meeting and the download, he never even considered it.
Plus, he had the sneaking suspicion that Jensen would strenuously object if he tried. For a robot designed to obey his orders he sometimes seemed to interpret them as suggestions or advice. He also talked and talked about any and everything and was a little geeky. Okay, a lot geeky. Clay now knew more about Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars and something called ‘Jossverse,’ than he’d ever needed to know.Caveat Emptor, or How Clay stopped ordering things on the internet
