Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairings: Juliet; Sawyer/Juliet
Length: 237,673 words

Why this must be read:

Another post-incident fic in which Juliet survives the bomb blast only to be transported back to the 1920's. This story feels like it could be a near-effortless addition to the LOST canon or a brilliant spin-off; tia weaves in flashbacks and her own spin on island mysteries in a manner completely true to our favorite series. She introduces interesting, three-dimensional new characters and includes many old favorites, but ultimately, this is Juliet (and James') story. But you don't need to be a fan of this pairing to enjoy this story, because it truly is a riveting read regardless.

09:30 am Ersatz Promises by Susanne Barringer and Susanne Schramm (R)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: None necessarily, but can read fairly naturally as pre-Mulder/Scully
Length: 95k
Author on LJ: Not to my knowledge.
Author Website: Gossamer pages for each author.
Why this must be read: Collaborative writing can result in the best of two worlds or the worst; in this case, it's the best. "Ersatz Promises" is another really good, well-plotted fic that fits into the mythology of S5, dealing specifically with a lot of the (in)fertility issues from the "Emily" arc but also working with the Syndicate's other hybridization and cloning projects. It really tackles the fact that the Consortium is not going to stop victimizing people for its own agenda, and that individuals within it are not going to stop trying (and usually failing) to buck the system in some way. It also really allows Scully to take control of her own destiny, to be a very active participant in the fight as opposed to simply a victim. The fic does a fabulous job of capturing her voice in the sections that she narrates, and an equally good job with Mulder's in his portions. The resolution is not fluffy or sweet (nor is it remotely akin to kid-fic, thank goodness), but it is at least potentially hopeful. Subject matter may be sensitive for some; the fic header has a more detailed note.

Why this must be read:
For me the appeal of the Dollar Bill/Mothman (aka Bill/Byron) pairing is that it can showcase certain aspects of a relationship that aren’t as easy to get in other Watchmen pairings. In this fic it’s the fear and anxiety of trying to approach the person you like, and the disappointment when you can't do it. Byron’s desperation is palpable, and his canon issues with alcohol are worked into this specific situation very effectively. It’s a heartbreaking and touching vision of this minor character.

Since then he couldn't talk to him, or at least he'd tried but his words tripped over each other so much that he just had to stop and leave. Ever since measured his confidence in how many steps he could walk from his office door to Bills.

Some days it was only one or two steps, some days ten. Some days he didn't make it past his own desk, face down with a tumbler of whiskey in hand. The last time he managed to get as far as 22 before turning tail and crawling back to his office. Half a bottle of scotch later he ended up falling asleep there. He'd done this so many times he feared he was starting to wear the carpet down in the hall way.

Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 29,096 words

Why this must be read:

Summary from the author: When he awakens from a coma to discover a London destroyed by a zombie plague, Ray Doyle sets out to find a refuge against infection and, so he hopes, Bodie. A crossover with the 28 Days Later universe.

I admit I'd never read a zombie story before, and I never thought a zombie story in The Professionals world would work. Let me say this clearly: it bloody well works! And works extremely well presented by the talented P.R.Zed. It is scary and bloody and fast paced. Did I mention creepy and nail biting as well? BTW, no knowledge of the "28 Days Later" universe is necessary. I've never seen the movie and had no problems enjoying this fic.

Why this must be read: A lovely story that examines the concept of home, and what it might mean to someone who has, in the last few years, spent more time off-world than on.

Even completely immersed in his article, Daniel couldn't manage to stay entirely on this planet. The days were long past when his clothing and awkward mannerisms left him seeming out of place in any context on earth. This man sitting in the park now was entirely self-assured, eye-catching in his build and dress, absolutely at home in any circle. Jack was probably the only one who looked at that twitching right hand and saw an uncomfortable alien.

Why this must be read: This takes your typical what if scenario and turns it into the epic fic of all epic fic. What if Leonard McCoy had never joined Star Fleet? Intrigued yet? What if I add that this is one of the hottest fic's I have ever read. The chemistry is unbelievable. Read this fic.
