01:04 pm On Ancient Wings by Cynamin (PG)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER / ANGEL: THE SERIES
Pairing: Buffy/Angel
Length: 15K+
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cynamin
Author Website:
Defunct

Why this must be read:
Cynamin does something entirely new with the idea of a Buffy/Angel futurefic, setting them in a distant but not unrecognizable future where Angel has begun to look more like the monster inside of him (aging in the way that, for instance, the Master did). But Buffy is still Buffy, and there's still that good fight. Her determination and optimism are so believable here, as are the effects of his having spent more centuries alone, always saving but never joining humanity.

Some part of her told her that right now, he needed her, too, even if he didn’t know it. )

01:44 pm Mornings at Weston's by Cadence Daly [G]

Fandom: GILMORE GIRLS
Pairing: Gen with the lightest hint of Luke/Lorelai
Length: 1861 words
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: Cadence Daly's stories at Black & White & Read

Why this must be read: I love this particular story because it's effortlessly in tune with the relationship between Lorelai and her routine. She's a frequent patron of Luke's diner, she has a regular shtick with him, and Lorelai is filled with a number of endearing quirks. The entire town is very aware of all this and when Lorelai is forced with the unenviable decision of where to relocate once she and Luke break up, it creates an unbalance. Try as she might she can't quite find her equilibrium. Cadence Daly does a wonderful job of capturing Lorelai in all her adorable quirkiness. It's in no way difficult to see Lorelai passing her time in the exact way

05:11 pm Children of the in Between by noxnoctisanima (R)
Fandom: NUMB3RS
Pairing: Charlie/Amita, David/Colby, Colby/Charlie
Length: 1445
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] noxnoctisanima
Author Website: http://noxnoctisanima.livejournal.com/
Why this must be read:

This isn't a happy fic but it is a powerful one.

Society collapses do to something that is never explained and our heroes survive, for a time.

This is a fic that will make you cry, and then it will make you think. You'll never be able to look at a post-apocalyptic AU the same way again.

This trumps all of them with a combination of beautiful writing and stark realism.

If you think you're in the right head space to handle it give it a try.

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] innocentsmith, and I've come back again (a bit late, I know, I'm sorry) to rec for the Whoniverse. I love timey-wimey plots and I'm a fan of many different Doctors, so I'll be reccing various eras of fic, mostly either gen or Doctor/Master.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Gen (Amelia Pond, Seven, and Ace McShane)
Length: 2,253
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] roachpatrol
Author Website: At Teaspoon, or LJ fic tag
Why this must be read:

The author's summary is, "In which young Amelia Pond attempts to seek both her fortune and the Doctor, talks to strangers, feeds a dog, and loses her bicycle in the woods (though not exactly in that order)."

I can't really improve on that, except to say that it's a deeply lovely little story with the mythic weight of a fairy tale, and all the characters are perfectly themselves.

'He never told me his name,' Amelia explains. 'He said he was the Doctor, but that's not an actual name. So I think he must have been one of the, you know, Lords and Ladies.' )

06:49 pm In Becoming Who We Are by elizah_jane (NC-17)
Fandom: RPF: THE WB/CW
Pairing: Jensen Ackles/Jared Padalecki
Length: ~82,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] elizah_jane
Author Website: Sticky Post of Fic
Why this must be read:

Sticking with my Big Bang Recs theme, another Jared/Jensen fic you must read is an AU, In Becoming Who We Are by [livejournal.com profile] elizah_jane. It's a deceptively simple story about the hard process of growing up and losing one love, only to find another in an unexpected place.

Told from Jensen's POV, the story is split in half between Jensen as a idealistic young college grad in love with an older man (Jeffery Dean Morgan), and as a bitter 28 year-old who's stuck in a dead-end job and fills his life with empty one night stands when he's not hanging out with his roommate and best friend, Jared. This is one of those rare fanfic stories that veers sharply from cliche and delves into the realm of realistic fiction, where the characters make stupid choices not to serve the plot but due to their inexperience, naiveté, or because they're trying to protect their own damaged hearts.

What really separates this story from the pack is the quality of the writing, the characterizations of both major and minor players, and the way [livejournal.com profile] elizah_jane manages to illustrate the transition from innocence to experience, and back again.

10:13 pm Immutable by bedlamsbard (PG-13)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Anakin/Obi-Wan, Anakin/Padmé
Length: 1,644
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bedlamsbard
Author Website: 'fanfic' tag
Why this must be read:

Because Anakin is supposed to be the one that fails at being a proper Jedi, the one who breaks the rules, the one who lets his feelings for other people get in the way of his duty. [livejournal.com profile] bedlamsbard puts Obi-Wan Kenobi in the role that is normally reserved for his apprentice and she does it in a way that really packs a punch.

“I have killed for him,” Obi-Wan says finally. “And I think that I would do worse. Have done worse. Without a moment’s hesitation. Without a second thought. Without regret. I think that I would betray my vows for him.”
