Hello people! I'm [livejournal.com profile] chamekke, and I've been given the keys to the crack_van for Life on Mars this month. I hope to rec some lesser-known older fics and do a spot of pompom-waving for more recent ones that may have escaped your notice :-)

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS UK
Pairing: Gen (with a hint of Sam/Gene)
Length: 1200
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fawsley
Author Website: fawsley's fanfic index on LJ
Why this must be read: What better way to kick off a month of recs than to begin with young Sammy? This sweetly dreamlike fic focuses on a cold and starry night in early 1973 when Sammy's parents take him out to look at the sky... then revisits it from adult Sam's point of view. [livejournal.com profile] fawsley shows us the Tyler family when they were still radiantly happy, adding even more poignancy to Sam's desperation to make Vic stay in 1x08. And then... she deftly wraps it up with an ending that is nothing short of glorious.

Because the story is written in a Sammy-style stream of consciousness, it's difficult to do it justice with an excerpt. Better just to put on a warm woolly hat and dive right in!

09:02 am Mia, by Francesca (NC-17)
Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Blair/Jim
Length: ~11.000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza
Author Website: Francesca's TS Fiction and Francesca at Prospect 852
Why this must be read:

Hi! I'm [livejournal.com profile] birggitt, and I'll be driving the Sentinel's Van this month. *g*
And my first offering is one of my all times favorite stories in Sentinel fandom: Mia by Francesca. Francesca has been recced all over the place, and there is a reason for it. Her writing is always amazing, accurate, and full of emotion. This story is no exception: it's a first time story, with oblivious Jim and Blair, partner's perceived betrayal, an amazing, surprising plot and OMG! the angst! THE ANGST! It hurts so beautifully!
Francesca's summary is: Jim Ellison meets the woman of his dreams And yes, he does. In a very tricky, twisted way, that's what happens here. Except... it's no :D
You really should read this to discover how this works *g*
Now, let's have a little taste )
Oh, yes... angst!

So, go read Mia, and let Francesca know how awesome writer she is :D

Hello, everybody! I’ll be driving the Star Trek: Reboot van this month. GO GO GO!

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Minor Spock/Uhura and Kirk/Spock
Length: 3,235
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] insaneidiot
Author Website: insaneidiot’s Star Trek tag
Why this must be read:

Author’s summary: The crew of the Enterprise is subjected to a compulsory seminar on Inappropriate Workplace Behavior, and Jim Kirk finds this to be particularly challenging.

This is one of those fics that I can read over and over and over again and it still makes me laugh out loud. Making Jim and the rest of the senior crew attend a mind-numbingly boring, painfully politically correct seminar on appropriateness in the workplace is the one the best premises I’ve ever heard, and [livejournal.com profile] insaneidiot hits it out of the park. One of my favorite things about this fic is that even when Jim honestly tries to be appropriate, every single thing he says and does becomes a filthy double entendre. Like the author’s note says, the real OTP of this fic is Kirk/Inappropriateness, and it just may be my OTP, as well.

Also recorded by [livejournal.com profile] reena_jenkins as a podfic here.

05:44 pm A Sure Thing by lightgetsin (NC-17)
Fandom: WHITE COLLAR
Pairing: Peter/Neal
Length: 3,800
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lightgetsin
Author Website: Profile at AO3
Why this must be read:

Because Neal using theft as foreplay is practically canon anyway, this is a fun sexy piece with great characterization and wonderful dialogue that all White Collar fans should enjoy.

Peter's the first to speak. He pushes himself up onto an elbow – it looks like a lot of work – and stares down at Neal. "Okay," he says, and there's a rasp in his voice. "Repeat after me: theft is not foreplay."

06:22 pm OVERVIEW: Community
Hi! I'm [livejournal.com profile] ishie and I'm driving the Community fried chicken space simulator this month. Since this is the first time for this particular fandom on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, we'll get some of the basics out of the way first. So man the biscuit thrusters and let's get going!

06:52 pm nothing to say but the things i know by Cereal (R)
Fandom: COMMUNITY
Pairing: Jeff/Britta
Length: 8k
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cereal
Author Website: Tagged on LJ
Why this must be read:

This is one of the first fics I read for Community and the one I return to most often. It was written during the first season's winter hiatus, when some of the character dynamics still hadn't quite gelled, but [livejournal.com profile] cereal has a deft hand at filling in even the barest of sketches. Well, and it helps that it combines two of the tropes I love best: roommates and fake dating.

09:04 pm How to Seduce a Jedi by Mac (NC-17)

Fandom: STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE
Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Length: Short
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: TPM Fiction Index
Why this must be read:

Hello! I’m Stacey [livejournal.com profile] sandspirit and I'm so glad to have an opportunity to rec Star Wars! I take great pleasure in being a Star Wars fan as well as a Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan fan. This month I’ll be reccing both the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy.

How to Seduce a Jedi is a lovely story about attraction and passion. A story about a game that fails where feelings succeed. And it really doesn't matter who seduced who.

10:07 pm A Rare Hue, by Jackiemei (G)
Hi there! I'll be driving your Watchmen Crack Van for this month. Hope you enjoy! :)

Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: OT3 Dan/Laurie/Walter
Length: ~1600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jackiemei
Author Website: http://jackiemei.livejournal.com/
Why this must be read:
This story takes the thorny, poignant, funny and complex relationship that is this OT3 and presents it through a people-watching outsider's point of view. We watch as details are picked out, mulled over, tested, and savored by a quiet, patient intelligence. We never learn this stranger's name, but the author makes it completely unnecessary as the narrator quickly becomes a good friend with humorous and often touching insights. The story is less about a "pairing" than about people, and that is what makes it fabulous.

Normally I encourage people to offer feedback to authors (because feedback is life, I tell you!) but KM4, where this fic lives, is already filled up. Generally speaking though, just taking a few seconds to let an author know you were there is one of the easiest ways to brighten someone's day for free. ;)

[Edit: I found the author, so you can leave feedback for her if you like. :D]

On the Kinkmeme: A Rare Hue (On her journal here, but f-locked. Ask to friend her and she probably will. :) )
