The Deepest Secret Nobody Knows by flecalicious, PG-13

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC
Pairing: Sherlock/Sally (past), Sherlock/John (implied)
Length: 12,008
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] flecalicious
Author Website: Master List on LJ can be found at [livejournal.com profile] lovingthevolume
Why this must be read:

Where to start? First off, I’ll say that everything by [livejournal.com profile] flecalicious is worth reading. This is an inventive, risk-taking author. There is perhaps no greater risk than a fic with this line in the second paragraph:

The real reason Sally Donovan hates Sherlock so much? They have a child he never sees.

Stop right there, don’t run away, don’t you trust me? In the hands of a terrific storyteller, this premise goes on to breathe life and intrigue into Sally Donovan. She is, here, a full-blown woman, mistakes, anger, love, life. John learns about Sherlock’s secret and it’s not easy, nor should it be. You begin to see what this fic might be about, but it’s not until the final lines that the revelation is made clear. No spoilers, go see for yourself:

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS UK
Pairing: To quote the author: "Gene/Sam, Annie/Sam, Ray/Chris, Annie/Chris, and those are only the ones I kind of mention. Also, Phyllis."
Length: 760 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] cws_eat_chs

Why this must be read:

Aaaand... because this is the CRACK_van, I thought I'd end my month of intoxicated driving on the crackiest note possible. It's been loads of fun, and I encourage you to sign up for a turn at the wheel. And thank you for letting me snatch the keys! (Sorry about the collision with the goat.)

Now, about this story. I can hear you saying, "Mpreg, chamekke? REALLY?" Because I'm known for my aversion to the mpreg genre. I curl my lip at it. I disparage it with unkind words. It giveth unto me the squick. Basically, my mouse can't click past it quickly enough.

And yet... and yet... this fic is irresistibly cracky and absurd. [livejournal.com profile] cws_eat_chs takes the whole ridiculous concept and embraces it like a long-lost lover. And it works. I can just about see this actually happening in an episode. It's weirdly convincing. (Plus it doesn't hurt that it's also sneakily funny.)

And since I had to admit that there is some great wingfic out there, it's only fair that I end this month by enjoying another tasty plateful of crow :-)

Enjoy!

09:13 am As We Forgive Those by Haphazard Method (PG)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: n/a
Length: post-ep (for En Ami)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] haphazardmethod
Author Website: http://www.reocities.com/haphmeth/
Why this must be read: A single line from Haphazard Method's "Synesthesia" inspired me to start writing fanfiction, but it's well known and been recced everywhere, including here, if memory serves. But this story might be even better.

SUMMARY: Mulder was so angry in En Ami. What happened to reconcile
him to Scully's actions? Barbara tells me most people said "sex."
This is not that story.

"The fact that forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who
trespass against us isn't honored more--I blame that on writers.
Because the easy story to tell is the vengeance story, and it's
known to satisfy. This guy shot my brother. How's the story gonna
wind up? And what does a reader think? OK, that's settled. So it's
just the easiest of all stories to tell. So it in fact encourages,
makes reputable vengeance." -- Kurt Vonnegut

This is not that story, either.

10:51 am Fireworks at Falls River, Every Fourth of July by Jenna Tooms (R)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Dana Scully/Fox Mulder
Length: short story
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] misslucyjane
Author Website: http://fluky.gossamer.org/author/10294-1.html
Why this must be read: I hope I don't get kicked out for reccing two stories in one day, but I thought it would be fun to finish with something light and appropriate for the season, especially since this might be the last time I get to rec here for The X-Files.

In case you missed that post, more than half the fandoms here are on the verge of being kicked off the regular rotation, and our fearless mod [livejournal.com profile] shaggirl says once you're off, you're off. So if you want to see The X-Files story recs on [livejournal.com profile] crack_van more often than once every year or two, please sign up here. You only have to post one rec a week. If you can't come up with four recs, then clearly you aren't reading enough fic!

Four or five fandoms ago, [livejournal.com profile] misslucyjane wrote first MSR and then DSR fanfiction for The X-Files under the pen name "Jenna Tooms." As I'm not a huge fan of the romance genre, I haven't read more than a handful of her stories, but I love this short story she wrote for a Scullyfic improv back in the day.

10:52 am Care and Treatment of Psychologically Fucked Up Starship Captains by likeadeuce (PG-13)
Wow, I can’t believe the month is already over! I hope you enjoyed my recs, and I encourage everyone to sign up for your turn at the wheel!

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: Jim/McCoy/Chapel
Length: 2,454
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce
Author Website: likeadeuce on AO3
Why this must be read:

Author’s summary: McCoy wasn't really writing a treatise about his captain's mental health. But over a few weeks of vacation, he wondered if he should have been.

This pairing just works for me. In fact, it’s one of the very few threesomes that I read, and [livejournal.com profile] likeadeuce executes this relationship beautifully. McCoy, Jim, and Christine spend a lazy shore leave at McCoy’s house in Georgia, where they make a list of the various ways Jim dances with danger on a regular basis. One thing I especially love about this fic is that it starts out light-hearted, becomes significantly more introspective, but ends on an optimistic note. This is the kind of fic that provides a portion of angst without leaving you wanting to cry in a dark corner.

Hello gorgeous [livejournal.com profile] crack_van readers, thanks for jumping in my creepy van. Today is my last day reccing Sherlock BBC and while I didn’t accomplish nearly as much as I wanted to - there’s simply too much good fic -- I am happy to leave the rest of the heavy-lifting to the next reccer. I leave you today with several porny smut recs, because I’m having that kind of a day. Enjoy and thanks for riding.

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC
Pairing: Sherlock/John/Mycroft
Length: 4,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] entangled_now
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] libraryofsol
Why this must be read:

Sherlock and Mycroft have an epic sibling rivalry. In this scorching hot piece by [livejournal.com profile] entangled_now John gets in between them. Um, literally. The brothers’ attempt to manipulate John against each other leaves them all undone. And if you like that, there are a few other threesome fics by this same author that I know you will find on your own if you’re even the slightest bit tenacious. However, this is unequivocally my favorite, if someone strapped a bomb to me in a deserted swimming pool and made me choose.

Length: 4,417
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] pendrecarc

Why this must be read:

It’s hard to deny the power of Sherlock’s hands. In this fic, you don’t have to. Joanna is having cramps and Sherlock decides he knows what she needs. And he delivers. Boy, does he deliver.

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC
Pairing: Sarah/John (imagined)
Length: 3,000
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] carolyn_claire
Author Website: Carolyn_Claire on DW
Why this must be read:

As a Martin Freeman fan and a girly-girl, it’s not hard to get completely wrapped up in this fic, which is aptly summarized as Sarah waits for John to come over for dinner during The Great Game. This Sarah is a real girl, someone I can totally relate to. She’s wondering why her date is late, and goes through all the stages one goes through when a man lets you down (speaking from personal experience, who me?)

However, imagining the total hotness of one John Watson leads her to the perfect way to kill time, which is really, the best response to being stood up. Even if John has the most understandable reasons, what with being kidnapped by Moriarty and all.

03:40 pm Clams on the Half Shell and Roller Skates, Roller Skates by Kaye Austen Michaels (NC-17)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 174k
Author on LJ: smudley
Author Website:Me and Thee archive and Starsky & Hutch archive

Why this must be read:
My last offering before handing back the keys to the van is by one of the best S&H authors there is. This story is set after the events of "Ballad for a Blue Lady". The boys are out of sync and Huggy comes up with a unique way of getting them back with surprising results. As usual KAM's writing is superb.

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC
Pairing: Sherlock/John/Mycroft (Or maybe John/Mycroft, Sherlock)
Length: 1,394
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thinkpink20
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] thinkpink_fics

What I like about [livejournal.com profile] thinkpink20 is that her writing is both dreamy *and* steamy. She does a sexy, elegant, perfect Mycroft. Throw in his “bit not good” relationship with Sherlock and a need to touch John Watson and there you are.

04:23 pm Waiting in the Sky by dancinbutterfly (NC-17)
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Gerard/Mikey, brief Mikey/OMC
Length: 22,660 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dancinbutterfly
Author Website: Fic Master Post
Why this must be read: Everyone knows that Mikey and Gerard are close and everyone thinks they know why. They are all wrong. The one where Gerard is an alien that gets adopted by the Ways.

This is absolutely amazing. It's a story about being different, about love and free will, and it's intense and beautiful and heartbreaking at times. I love the characterisations of Mikey and Gerard and the hints we get of the fascinating alien species/civilisation Gerard is from. The way Mikey and Gerard's mental closeness is written is just marvelous and Elena is a wonderful supporting character. One of the Must Reads of this year's [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang.

Waiting in the Sky

This is my last rec for the month. I hope you've managed to find something worth reading among the stories I've recced.

PS The van is in urgent need of more more bandom reccers. It's neither particularly difficult nor burdensome: you have a whole month and you only have to do twelve recs. There is even a posting template! (Check out the posting guidelines here.)

Fandom: WATCHMEN
Characters: Hollis, Rorschach (Gen)
Length: ~1400
Author on LJ: Anonymous author (if anyone knows who wrote this, please post!)
Author Website: Watchmen Kinkmeme v5.0 http://spam-monster.livejournal.com/4155.html
Why this must be read:

"Rorschach is too late.

1939's Hollis Mason is not. He is very confused, though."

This fic takes the standard "fix-it" trope and gives it an extra twist, with all the tension, anguish and pathos one could hope for in such a compact package. Fix-its and alternate realities always fascinate me, and this story is one of my absolute favorites. :)

Why this must be read:
Written for the annual Highlander Holiday Shortcuts story exchange, this story may be tailored to a recipient, but I feel it embodies perfectly everything I fell madly in love with when I (years ago) first discovered Methos/Duncan stories. It's a prose poem, an old legend, a romance, a comedy, a mystery - all rolled into one fine, lyrical, funny, delicious tale. And, for an extra bonus, it contains donkeys!
